Read moreThis cafe has a few different locations. My review is based solely on the Pasadena location.
Parking: Parking in the area is not impossible, but can be tough. This is an active street and It can be hard to not only find a spot , but successfully park when there are cars in front of and behind you. The upside is that the parking is free. Also, if you’re eating outdoors you can see the car from your table if you’ve parked on Madison Ave.
Breakfast/Brunch: This location serves breakfast until 1PM on Weekdays and 2PM on Weekends.
Ordering: The line at the restaurant had retractable belt barriers. This created a sense of organization when waiting to place your order. Honestly, the menu is quite confusing. There’s a paper menu inside, a menu on the board above the register and a menu online. All three menus seem to have some different items. For example, I initially ordered pancakes that I saw on the online menu and was told they don’t have pancakes, but they did have waffles. You’ll place an order with the cashier. The cashier then gives you a table number sign that you’ll place at your table of choice. This is done so that the waiter/waitress can find you when bringing your food.
Food and Beverage: Water is self serve indoors from a water dispenser. I am not opposed to this set up, but I do feel it’s inconvenient given the size of the plastic cups provided. It’s even more inconvenient if you’re dining outdoors.
I ordered “ The Salmon Scramble” which consist of three eggs, smoked salmon, bread and a side salad.. This was quite tasty. I also ordered a Belgian waffle. However, they didn’t bring It to out because they said I wasn’t charged for It. That was fine though because the Salmon and eggs were filling enough.
The bacon wasn’t crisp but still tasty. It included a tomato and slice of lettuce. I wasn’t quite sure the purpose. Maybe I could’ve made a BLT if they gave me some bread.
The smoothie was flavorful. The downside is that It comes in a glass. I would’ve preferred It in a plastic cup. This would’ve made It easier to transport and take It to go.
Overall, this restaurant was a good choice. It was a bit crowded, but there’s enough seating for you to dine. This isn’t a restaurant that I would go out of the way to get to. The upside is that they have seven LA locations that are likely to be...
Read moreWas in Pasadena last night for a play and tried to stop here for some coffee. It was crowded and busy, but this, I did not mind. Here's what did bother me, though. It was wierd to order coffee and have to walk through the restaurant to go to another counter to pick up the coffee. I had to try to find the pickup area and hope that I was in the right place. No one acknowledged my presence or asked if I was waiting to pick something up. It was awkward, because no matter where I stood, I was in the way of a busy server. As I was waiting, I realized that at least one person who had ordered after I did, had picked up her drink and left. After some time spent stepping out of the way of servers and other patrons, I asked about my order, and it seemed that my order had not made it to the folks making the drinks. At this point, we had to start making our way back to the theater, and I asked if I could cancel the order. No one was able to provide any idea of the ETA for the drinks, or I would have been happy to wait a bit longer. The staff at the order pickup area very politely directed me back to the counter where I had placed the order. There, I was greeted by a manager who I thought was issuing a refund. I have since discovered that all he did was reprint the receipt and hand me a copy. I explained that we really wanted the drinks rather than a refund and asked if we could have the drinks made He shrugged dismissively and said, "Well, ma'am, yeah, if you want to wait. There's a 10-15 minute wait." I understand that I need to wait. I understand that there are orders ahead of mine. I'm not ignorant - I'm a customer trying to order some coffee. Today, when I realized that I had not been issued a refund and had been charged for the drinks, I called Urth and asked for some help. The long and the short of it is that they are unable to look up the transaction using a receipt or order number. I will have to travel to Pasadena from North Orange County to present the receipt or produce my debit card.
So, I've donated $15.50 to Urth Caffe. I paid for coffee that I wanted but didn't get.
And that is...
