The ambiance is very close to an literal Jamaicain dining kitchen. Very cleanly, plenty of seating (you seat yourself at a booth or at a table).
The service was alright. The gentleman who registered the order seemed informative and knowledgable of what was offered on the menu.
Not sure why it took so long for the food to come out but there were maintenance workers there that day which may have contributed to delays.
They've got a decent selection of authentic Jamaican beverages (Ting, Grace products, and so forth) as well as an ecclectic selection of entrees to choose from.
The food wasn't really hitting at all. Before I go into detail as to why I'll shed light on the positive:
The positive:
The beef patty with the cocobread combo is a must. This turned out to be actually better than what I ordered. Had I had known, I would've ordered two and would've been content. These folks have the beef patties and the cocobread down. The bread was steaming hot and the patties were well flavored and seasoned with a great consistency throughout.
The not so positive:
The entree wasn't that great and wasn't worth the price. Ordered, the curry goat and the portions seemed inconsistent with the price.
I get it - goat is a premium meat and doesn't cost as much as chicken but when you've got more rice and peas than meat something is up (the rice and peas weren't terrible).
I felt like I paid for a rice and peas plate with a side of goat curry.
And, I felt some way bout the curry goat as well. The consistency was kind of rubbery as though it were overcooked, there were lots of bones (seemed to be more bones than meat) and the flavor overall was lacking. There wasn't any gravy to add to your rice and peas or plantain. And for any one who truly appreciates Jamaican food knows that gravy is an imperative part of any curry or stew based meal.
I don't usually dine out and prepare my own but I was visiting out of town and thought I'd give this place a try since Tony's was closed (Tony's is my go to for Jamaican food).
This didn't really come close to what I'd actually consider authentic Jamaican food. Maybe it was the entree I chose but it wasn't popping for me.
My suggestions to management:
Your service and workers are professional, informative, and great. This is usually a deal breaker for me and the young workers here are hard working and get you taken care of.
Reconsider your portioning. You should've advertised the curry goat plate as a rice and peas plate with a side of goat curry.
Add more flavor and gravy to your curries and stews.
Lastly, keep those awesome patties and...
Read moreAfter reading about it in the Community newspaper, I was very excited to try out this new Caribbean restaurant since there are so few in the Austin area. It is tucked in the corner of a shopping plaza off of 12th street, but it was easy to find. I arrived around 11:30am as I was out running a morning errand. Upon entry I was immediately greeted by a friendly cashier who made me feel welcomed. I ordered a jerk chicken platter and a side of brown stew chicken. Unfortunately due to the time of day, the stew chicken wasn't available, but I understood and appreciated how the information was relayed apologetically. I ordered my food to go, paid roughly $11 and waited less than 10 minutes for it. The jerk chicken flavor was tasty, but the meat portion was smaller than what I am used to. Usually when I order a jerk chicken platter there is enough meat and sides for leftovers. However, I took into consideration that the price was a few dollars cheaper. and may explain the difference. Rice and peas combo wasn't bad; except I needed a little more gravy. The cabbage was ok (I love veggies soooo...). The plantains were perfect to me; they weren't too sweet and I liked the hint of cinnamon. Overall it was good, but not fantastic. Would I go again? Yes, if I am looking for something that reminds me of home. I actually liked the food better than another place that has been around...
Read moreNever have I felt more compelled to leave a review for a place. My boyfriend had been asking to come here for months, ever since he heard of Rum Punch Sunday on IG. We finally went on a Sunday and it did not disappoint. I've never had more flavorful jerk chicken or rice. My bf had oxtail and the meat just fell off the bone; it was so tender. If you are ever in the Pflugerville area, please please please do yourself a favor and try this most delicious Caribbean cuisine. We live in Austin and have decided we will travel the half hour to get some delicious grub. Also everyone is so friendly. When I went up to the trash to dispose of our utensils and plates, the lady in the counter asked how everything was, I exclaimed, " so so good, so flavorful, thank you!" Something I rarely do, but I had to acknowledge how good my meal had just been. Highly satisfied! Thank you Island Fork! Will definitely be...
