I stumbled across Cake Life by accident with my best friend after grabbing lunch nearby, and I instantly fell in love. Then I found out they made Beyoncé’s birthday cake, and I was done—how could you not love this place?!
On my first visit, I had the Nanaimo bar, the honey butter biscuit with a side of butter, and the butterbeer drink. Everything was so yummy! I love Nanaimo bars but can never find them, so I was thrilled—and this one was exceptional. The honey butter biscuit was warm, flaky, and perfect with the butter, and the butterbeer drink? Sweet, creamy, and magical.
By my second visit, I was completely hooked. I tried the strawberry n’ cream poppin tart (ridiculously delicious), the hot chocolate with the fluffiest, hugest homemade marshmallow, and the everything bagel croissant—which is now my absolute favorite. The croissant was the perfect bite: garlicky, with just the right amount of salt, rich and buttery, and topped with the creamiest, most heavenly drop of scallion cream cheese. Every layer was perfection.
The shop itself is super charming and cozy, with free WiFi and the nicest baristas. It’s the perfect little spot to treat yourself or just relax for a while.
I absolutely love visiting here and trying something new every time. Everything they make is a hit, and I’m already planning my next trip. Beyoncé and I clearly have...
Read moreA friend and I visited this bakery yesterday thinking our initial impression was an isolated incident. However, reading other recent reviews, it seems that we’re not the only customers, particularly of color, who have faced poor service here.
We first stopped by the bakery before grabbing dinner nearby. The staff member at the counter (tall, glasses, dark hair) displayed a notably unwelcoming demeanor. It felt as though our presence was an inconvenience and irritation to them.
We didn’t make a purchase at this time, but returned a few hours later after dinner to give it another shot. Regrettably, we were still greeted with the same dismissive and unwelcoming attitude from the same staff member. During both of our visits, there was a distinct lack of basic customer service etiquette—no greeting, no welcome, and no offer of assistance. The lack of acknowledgment of us in the bakery continued until we asked about a cupcake flavor. The staffer's response to our simple question (“What do you think of the flavor?”) was delivered in a tone that suggested we were bothering them.
We did make a purchase during the second stop, but our overall experience at Cake Life was nothing but unwelcoming service that overshadowed any and all potential enjoyment of...
Read moreThis is a review for Cake Life Bake Shop overall as well as our wedding cake experience. I've gone to Cake Life since it opened and I was living in Fishtown back 2016-2018. I used to get pastries nearly every Saturday for me and my housemates. I also would get their cakes for birthdays (flavors, texture, etc are PERFECT). Then, when I moved I would stop by any time I found my way in Fishtown. When they reopened in 2020 I was so excited. I then introduced my boyfriend... now husband to cake life back in 2021. When we got engaged in 2023 we were excited to find out that Cake Life was making wedding cakes again. Our venue came with a cake but having our cake instead come from a place that was special to both of us was so meaningful. Working with Allison was very easy. We did a cake tasting in the store (so fun!) and then we picked our flavors and design. Delivery went seamlessly (or at least, I saw the cake, we cut it and it appeared on my plate so I assume it did). There are so many unknowns when planning a wedding, but knowing we were going to have such an yummy cake from a place that was so special to us was a comfort. Thank...
