If you are ever in Philly this is one of the best cheese steaks I have had so far. I’m not from Philly but I asked some one at the church I visit in Philly and they said Max’s. The 1st time I tried to visit the line was all the way down the block and wrapped around the building. Since it is in the inner city or what looks like the hood I wasn’t sure if I wanted to wait that long or even where to safely park. It is at a busy cross section and if your not familiar with the area it can seem confusing as far as parking is concerned. The second time I attempted to go I found parking quickly. There are a lot of locals around. Honestly both times I visited on a Sunday so like any inner city the parking is usually free, safe from authorities and more abundant on Sundays. I’m pretty sure it was obvious I was a tourist because the locals do have a certain look. This review is long because now I see why that line was so long because these Cheese steaks are so so gooooood. I got the small one and it was filled with flavor, meat and cheese . It was honestly huge, the right kind of sloppy and juicy and frankly just what I needed. The meat was so tender . It taste like good sirloin. I got mine with mushrooms, pickles, onions , Salt and pepper, provolone, oil and vinegar, ketchup, garlic powder and spicy mustard . I got a grape juice as well , it was just a bottle of grape juice nothing special but I needed something. It wasn’t cold at all. So I walked in a bar around the corner and they gave me ice for free. I walked in there because I saw one of the locals coming out with a cup of ice . I followed suit. When in Rome when in Rome. I had to drive back to NJ ( plus I don’t drink)but they were running a special for who ever would eat in could get a free beer. This sandwich was so good I want it again right now. It’s true that the best local foods come from the hood. I hope no one takes that the wrong way but it’s worth any one from any walk of life going there and experiencing this wonderful place in the heart of Philly. Make sure you check out the menu before you go or pay attention to the menu before you are called to place your order because they expect you to know what you want because they are really busy. They aren’t super friendly but probably just because they are busy and didn’t have time for small talk or maybe that was just...

Read moreI went to Max’s, it needs to be shut down or at least inspected by a health inspector. If you are out of town and in Philly save your money, checked the negative google reviews. Those people are spot on with the reviews. This place has went downhill since I last had a cheesesteak.
This place is ratchet with a capital R. There was a roach 🪳 crawling on the glove box, this is also the same area where the food is made. Saw the roach too late. The club is connected to Max’s so it was so loud you could barely hear anything. This means it was hard to hear the questions the workers said. For example, which cheese with blank attitude face with aggressive tone?
Instead of the workers being understanding of the issue with the music, the worker(s) got an attitude when you couldn’t hear them and had to repeat themselves. Then some of the worker(s) had on inappropriate attire to work at a restaurant. I suspect some of them work at the bar and the restaurant.
The food, particularly the cheesesteak has the cheese at the bottom like a hoagie is made. They pile a bunch of the raw meat on the grill, then take from the pile and cook it. Not sure if that is sanitary nor is it fresh.
Also, the cheesesteak was missing meat on a 23$ cheesesteak. A lot of it is full but 1/3 of it leaves a lot to be desired.
They don’t cook the cheese with the steak so it’s not all melted in with the steak. They had a hoagie person which I guess that’s the only person that makes the hoagies because no one else could make it. Of course this person was no where to be found then finally popping up after requesting a hoagie a couple times.
STAY Away from this place. If you want to be disrespected to the highest degree, overcharged for mediocre food then by all means visit. Watch people standing around talking, chatting and mad at you for ordering food even though...
