Yesterday I almost expelled my stomachs holdings, thank the heavens for ginger tea. This was my first meal of the day but who knew I should have buffered my stomach…for breakfast. I ordered The Hog n Chick and got a side order of one pancake to give it a try. I rarely give one star reviews because I trend positive but food causing stomach upset is a good enough reason imo. The Food, The Bad and The Ugly The Food: The sourdough bread, the pancake sample I ordered and the strawberry preserves were very good. The pancake in particular was nice and fluffy with a semi-sweet taste. There was ample and free parking for those concerned, the waitress that brought my food was attentive and nice, the checkout is modern and efficient and the restaurant looked clean and there’s a nice little patio if you fancied dining al fresco. I can’t elaborate further because I didn’t stay long as it was a pick-up and I didn’t get a chance to check out the restroom. The food was seemingly prepared quickly, I ordered it while sitting at Sally Beauty Supply up the street from the restaurant and by the time I arrived it was done. I can only hope it wasn’t an old order that had sat then was given to me…although that would explain a lot. The Bad: The eggs, while cooked expertly, were completely tasteless and bland. The Ugly: The hash-browns were hard as a rock, tasted like what I assume clay would and served in the form of a brick…fitting I suppose. They were extremely greasy and probably the main culprit for my roiling stomach. I was super excited to try the sausage patties after reading the delicious description on their menu. Unfortunately, they fell flat…literally, they were flat, tasteless, dried out hockey pucks. It’s a shame because I was excited to try the food here after my stepdad saw it on YouTube and suggested it to me. I really wanted to make this place a breakfast staple, especially because it’s conveniently located in downtown Phoenix or Biltmore. However, after this experience, I will not be returning. I abhor falling ill as an adult, regardless of the cause. Thankfully, this only cost me $22 and not a doctor’s visit. There are two kinds of people in the world, my friend: Those with a stomach made of steel, and the people who have the job of making the Peptobismol and Kaopectate for those who don’t.

I hoped to eat at Matt’s Big Breakfast during my visit to Phoenix…and they did not disappoint! We were seated immediately (we expected a long wait from what others said) and we were able to order right away! We arrived at 11:00 on a Monday. We started with the honey lemonade…it’s a must have and it’s fresh squeezed! I had the Five Spot Platter with home fries (with fresh rosemary) and the artisanal roll was so light—it was amazing! I loved the bacon and the pork products are crafted by local butchers. The chef told us that all of the sourdough breads and the rolls come from the Wildflower Bread Company. We learned that they do not have freezers or microwaves and everything is made from scratch—that’s why it’s so fresh! This restaurant also only cooks with real butter and extra virgin olive oil. We also had the Salami Scramble with hash browns, sour dough toast and fresh homemade strawberry jam. Additionally, we split a short stack of griddle cakes with 100% real Vermont maple syrup. It was delicious. The portions were very big—so big that we actually took half of it back to our resort to warm up the next morning. I would highly recommend Matt’s Big Breakfast to anyone who is a breakfast lover!

I've always heard mostly positive things about this place and today my friends and I thought we'd try it for a late breakfast. We arrived and were greeted by a friendly hostess who informed us of a 15 minute wait which was completely acceptable given the reputation and the level of courtesy shown by the hostess thus far. However, we were sat a high top that was completely together with a separate table so that two parties were effectively sharing a table. Some space to keep a semblance of separation would have been nice. After being presented with such a focused menu I was even more excited. In my experience restaurants with limited menus usually have amazing execution. Regrettably, that was not to be the case. The overall service was mediocre when considering the amount of servers for such a small space, except the one server that overheard me discussing I wish I had ordered a different dish, and she was gracious enough to offer me a change before the kitchen had started. So, that was very nice. The atmosphere and decor was very friendly and warm.

Food: We ordered the Monday special, Huevos Rancheros, a cheese omelet with all the meats, and the Chop and Chick.

Huevos Rancheros: the dish was advertised with over easy eggs but came with scrambled eggs dumped on top off two tortillas stacked directly on top of each other slathered with chili verde salsa. No thought or care was given to presentation. The salsa itself was bland, the eggs had little to no salt or pepper. The accompanying pinto beans seemed more like an afterthought out of a can that was just kept in a bain marie.

The omelette: Cheese, bacon, sausage, ham, mushrooms, peppers, and onions served with home fries. The meats were all tough as if stored way too cold or cooked at way too high of a temperature or a combination of both. The home fries were cooked well, however the onions used were way too sweet, almost sugary. Omelette itself was ok, only fillings were subpar.

The Chop and Chick: Pork chop, scrambled eggs and home fries. This dish seems to have been the best out of the three. As in it got the least complaints. The chop was overcooked and dry, but seasoned very well. The potatoes were same as above, eggs were ok.

Whoever their supplier is for the sourdough bread has some good stuff. And same with the black berry jam. Good choices.

And I will say the Huevos Rancheros and Chop and Chick meal were edible and as such finished as we were hungry and hadn't eaten all day. Just again, rather disappointed given the reputation.

All in all, not impressed. I am unsure if this is a case of expectations being set higher than reality or if this was just an off day or new hire training day. With such a large and loyal following I must give Matt's Big Breakfast the benefit of the doubt and award at least 3 stars instead of 2. I may be back to give them...

Visited on a Sunday morning around noon and they had line of people waiting for tables. We must have waited for about 15 minutes before we were seated. The girl at the front was very polite and professional. Our server was amazing and continued to check on us throughout our meal to make sure we were comfortable and happy with our meal. It was a second time for me and first time for my husband. I ordered Cheese Omelet (with extra mushrooms and onions) with the side of Hashbrown, Wheat toast and Blueberry jelly with some iced tea. My husband ordered the special of that day which was scrambled eggs with spinach and bacon with the side of Hashbrown, Sourdough toast and Strawberry jelly and their freshly squeezed Orange Juice. The orange juice was very sweet (little too sweet for my preference) but tasted really great. The server brought our drinks in 5 minutes and food came about 10 minutes later. My omelet was very delicious, hash browns were greasy, both jellies were great but Blueberry is my favorite, less sweeter than the Strawberry one. My husband's eggs were too salty. Their bacon slices are nice and thick and extra peppery. Their customer service was great, their prices are a little pricey for their Breakfast menu, if one ends up ordering extra such as mushrooms, peppers or onions for their eggs, the price can go higher pretty quick. Taking 2 stars away for making the food salty and for the price of items, limited menu, loud place. There is no presentation to the food, please ignore the zig zag of ketchup (that was my creation!). They can definitely work on the menu, their presentation and may be their prices. Time will tell how much they really pay attention to their...
