For the last 4 years brother & I have gone through over a dozen different pizza places throughout the valley and I hope this review helps those who may want to venture outside their normal locale.
My brother and I set up an experiment where we always order the same item. (in this case it's Large pepperoni Pizza, extra cooked with extra oregano)
We have gone to places such as Red Devil (multiple locations from Tempe (2nd Ave and Southern), South Phoenix (McDowell and 30th street) and even to their North Phoenix location (30th street and Bell Rd). We have travelled throughout the valley and have tried places like Dominics Bistro in Sun City (99th Ave and Bell) and Paulies Little bite of italy (99th ave and Greenway), as well as various Rays Pizza (Happy Valley and 25th Ave as well as Anthem) and other Anthem pizza locations like Gio's Pizza (i-17 and Anthem way) Rosati's Pizza (Galvian and Anthem Way) places like Venezia's Pizza and Sal's Pizza Both in Tempe and Federal Pizza in central Phoenix on Central Ave and Pizzeria Bianco in Central Phoenix as well. other locations such as Roma Pizza in Old town Glendale (57th Ave and Glendale) as well places such as Giant Manhattan Pizza (19th Ave in Phoenix), Time Square pizza (i-17 and Union Hills) North Phoenix, NYPD Pizza (7th Ave and McDowell) Even Spinatos' Pizza in Scottsdale, Oregano's in Cave Creek as well as Slices in Desert Ridge!
We have made an effort to visit these places because Hey, we're italian and we don't want nobody gettin' ketchup on a cracker if ya know what I mean!
Amongst all of the pizza places we visited based on the quality of their pizza Red Devil locations are simply the best tasting! Their pizza sauce seems second to NO ONE! If I were to rank some of these pizza places it would go something like this: I am not gonna list them all below but definately one's worth your time and consideration if you are in the area.
BEST OF THE BEST - Red Devil Pizza (locations: 30th Street and Bell in north Phoenix, McDowell and 30th street in central-south Phoenix, as well as 2nd Ave and Southern Ave. in Tempe), Best tasting pizza I have had since moving from back east! Great sauce and great romantic old school italy vibe especially North Phoenix and Mcdowell locations) This pizza is so good I often order a second pie to go so I can share with others! Red Devil Wings are pretty good too! back to the pizza, the Pizza is not very expensive compared to others on this list either... (lookin' at you Gio's) Red Devils Menu offers alot of different foods as well. something on their menu I am sure everyone will enjoy.. many other dishes besides pizza such as wings, pasta, seafood various wines. excellent choice for nice italian cuisine night out.
Dominics Pizza Bistro (99th Ave and Bell) (very close 2nd in ranking to Red Devil) Great tasting Pizza old school atomsphere with Frank Sinatra and great classic music playing and Old Yankee baseball themes as well as old school actors on the wall. Great place to visit! Staff was excellent, checking on us and Pizza was soo good we ordered another large pizza to go as we left to share with co-workers! Definately recommend the drive there but check their hours first as they are closed on certain days
Paulies Bite of Italy (99th Ave & Greenway) Suncity, not far from Dominics - especially if Dominics is closed on the day you wanna go out) This place is awesome too! It is much like Dominics Pizza with old school Vibe and old actor pictures on the wall. Pizza tastes really good and staff was great as well.
Sal's Pizza in Tempe (on apache and Rural, next to ASU) Good pizza great college vibe (small little hole-in-wall place) hard to find parking during busy traffic times
Roma Pizza in old school Glendale (57th Ave and Glendale, across street from Haus Murphy German Restaurant) This Pizza was good and would recommend if you are on central west side of town. Dang, character limited exceeded. Can't list more. except try these places as well as times square pizza (n. phx) and Gio's Pizza (anthem) ask...
Figured I would try an old favorite. Note to self. Stick with what you know. So I ordered this on the Google connection, called EatStreet. I placed my order at I think 237, and it was going to be ready at 2:57. I received an email confirmation stating this. I arrived at 3:02, and the hosts at the counter inside the restaurant, Grabs my ticket and went back to the kitchen to get my order. When he came back he brought one part of the order which was an order of spaghetti and he said that my order was not going to be ready until 325. I told him that’s impossible because this is 257. He went on to explain that this is like the third time this has happened this week and that this Eat Street company is telling people their order will be ready 20 or 30 minutes before it’s actually ready. They showed me the receipt they received from eat street which showed that my pizza would not be ready until 325. Told him that was not acceptable and I wanted to speak with someone in charge. And by the way he said that they have put the pizza in the oven and it should be about 15 minutes. So some young lady came out I do not remember her name, so I asked what was she going to do about this mixup. In short, absolutely nothing. She took my name and phone number and said some guy would give me a call on Monday. This is Wednesday when I’m writing this review, I’ve heard nothing from them. She offered me nothing in return for the mixup. So I wait until 325, actually, it was 320, to receive my pizza.I did not think to take a look at it. Once I got home, we had noticed that the pizza was slightly under cooked. By that I mean the cheese had just gone into the melting stages, and there were no toasty areas except for on the crust.
Lesson learned. Don’t go back to what was familiar, because it’s never the same. Spinatos,...
Read moreAfter years of driving past a seemingly unremarkable Italian restaurant, curiosity and the consistently packed parking lot finally drew me in. From the exterior, one might not expect much - it doesn't scream modernity or chic dining. Yet, after two years on this side of town, my curiosity won. I decided to step inside, and I'm glad I did. This place debunked all my initial assumptions with its quality and affordability.
The red sauce, a critical benchmark for any Italian eatery, was notably hearty. It had a depth of flavor that spoke of careful, slow cooking and a blend of well-chosen herbs and spices. As for the lasagna, it was a delightful surprise. Perfectly layered, with a generous filling and a beautifully melted cheese topping, it was both comforting and satisfying.
One might be tempted to judge the book by its cover, especially in this case. The decor, admittedly, could use an update. It carries an air of a bygone era, which might deter some. However, this aspect adds to the charm once you experience the warmth and friendliness that greet you inside. The staff's hospitality made the dining experience even more enjoyable, making it feel like a home away from home.
In an age where ambiance often overshadows the essence of dining - the food - this establishment reminds us of the joy of simple, well-cooked meals that don't need to break the bank. The bustling parking lot, it turns out, was a testament to the quality and love put into the food and service here.
I walked in with skepticism and walked out with plans to return. This restaurant, with its outdated decor and unassuming facade, hides a culinary heart that beats strongly with the love of Italian cooking. It's a lesson in not judging a book by its cover and a reminder that sometimes, the best meals come from the places you...
