I was in the uptown area and checked my map, saw that I was nearby so I decided to go and check this place out for the first time (certainly won't be my last, that's fasho!). I was greeted in a warm and friendly manner by Jessica and Jasmin as I walked in. I looked at what was available and made my selections. I started with the raspberry prickly pear fruit pocket, which had a vibrant and tangy filling, wrapped in a tender and buttery pastry that was simply delightful. The cinnamon date muffin was what I tasted next, and it felt like a comforting warm hug in baked form, perfectly spiced, soft, and for a muffin, it wasn't very dense which was nice. Then I tried the chorizo and egg pocket, which was very flaky, buttery!!!, and flavourful. The eggs were soft and well cooked, the beef chorizo was well spiced and had a nice mouth feel, and the cheese melded everything together beautifully. The sautéed onions, green chilli, and peppers added just the right touch of savouriness and a light sweetness, and a bit of Tapatio on top elevated it even further. The corn blueberry honey cake offered a lovely contrast with its moist texture and gentle sweetness, complemented by fresh blueberries and a smooth frosting. As someone who spent a decent amount of their childhood in the South eating cornbread, this felt nostalgic with a bit of a refreshing and elevating twist.
Before leaving, I decided I wanted one more thing to go. I told Jasmin, the owner, she could choose for me, baker’s choice! She chose the lemon curd cookie, and it ended up being the perfect way to wrap up this experience because when i got home and tried it, all i could do was smile and nod my head in approval. The cookie had what i presume is a sugar cookie base. The lemon curd was bright, tart, slightly eggy in the best way. The cookie overall was incredibly balanced.
The flavour ratios throughout everything I had were meticulously spot on, with just the right harmony between sweet, savoury, tart, and spice. Everything I had was fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and most importantly, made with love! I will definitely be back... It's worth going out of your way to come here to treat yourself to some delicious...
Read more100% recommend Süss Pastries!! I have tried the fruit pockets (all flavors are phenomenal) from various coffee shops around town and they have been my absolute fav, so I was so glad when I found out Jasmin opened a storefront! I stopped in today for the first time and had a lovely visit (with a fruit pocket, of course). I'm not gonna lie, I was a bit starstruck meeting Jasmin at the shop today (because OMG, I love to bake for fun and admire her SO much)! :) She is such a sweet person who has brought something great to Phoenix with her baking expertise! I got the Sonoran Brownie for my husband (and of course sampled some as well) and it was just as amazing! Very fudgy and chocolaty, but so buttery as well so it's not a super dense fudgy brownie, which I absolutely love! Overall, Süss Pastries is a gem in Phoenix that you don't want to...
Read moreBrilliant. Delicious. Perfection of a hand pastry. They reinvented fruit pockets! Some may remember an over-processed, bland-crusted, light-on-filling, rectangular, breakfast-on-the-go, food product. Suss’ handmade take completely elevates its sorry cousin to a joyful indulgence. The crust could be your grandma’s and there’s no shortage of flavorful filling. You won’t be able to decide which creative flavor to pick, so get a few to cut up and share…just don’t put them in the toaster! lol
You’ll find Suss in a shared space with two other great, local food businesses on the SE corner of 7th Ave....
