El Maguey Mexican Restaurant — Restaurant in Piedmont

I rarely give restaurants bad reviews over one meal, but this is not the first time I have been there and the food was not good. Im pretty sure the chicken in my order was canned chicken. Only a few slithers of bell pepper. It did not look like cooked shredded chicken. My fundido was not put together it was brought out with tortilla wraps for me to put it together at the table. The chips were just the kind that I do not like, which is not there fault, but the service was not very good. Had to wait about 10+ min. to pay to leave because the cashier was in back preparing a to go order. Worst of all was the price. For me, my husband and 3 year old to eat not so good food, it cost over $28 and that was for a combo, polo fundido, cheese rice (for the child), cheese dip and one tea. The food is good but pretty pricy. I'll eat there again but not anytime soon. (Oct 2019 decided to go back today. Food was good but that was it. We spent $20 on 1 dish myself and a relative split and two soft drinks. The staff never came back after delivering our meal to refill our drinks or to see if we wanted anything else. I had to go to the desk to get a to go box. Definitely not going back.) 2 stars is only because the food was good. Ok I went once more just to be fair. We walked in and the owner was sitting at the desk on his phone. Never once looked up, said hello, thanked us for coming in.. NOTHING. Staff immediately took our order, brought it out to us and that was the last we saw of them. I had to go find someone to get a refill of tea. And even after that they didn't come back to the table to see if we needed anything else. I had to go back and find someone to get a couple of t go boxes. Never...

This was the second time I had food from El Maguey. The first time there I got my order to go and was treated so kindly and with such quick service to get our order to us that I wanted to go back when I had the time to eat in their dining area. Sometimes when you go to a restaurant the second time, you aren't always as happy with the food or the service, but I was nicely surprised to find that this restaurant is consistently wonderful in all areas from their polite service to their excellent food to the great prices for good sized portions. Both times, we had enough food left over for another meal and left the restaurant full! I will definitely be going back, and I even got some of their business cards to share with friends and family so they will also be able to call El Maguey their favorite Mexican...
