I went to Knife in Plano last night. I was surprised to find it so empty. There was one occupied table inside and one occupied table on the patio. My friend and I went to the bar. I was looking forward to trying the bone marrow with caviar. It shows on the online menu, but when we got there, it wasn’t on the menu provided. I asked about it and the bartender said they were out. We were a bit disappointed, but there were other items on the menu that interested us. We ordered the “surf and turf” steak tartare and the bacon tasting. Then, we ordered the oysters.
Let’s start with the bacon tasting. It was delicious and the bacon jam on the side was amazing.
The steak tartare was okay, but there were some major flaws with it. To start with, it came with 3 oysters. The oysters were great, but they were just sitting on the plate (not in the shell). I would have preferred If they were in the shell so that we could enjoy them with the liquor. This steak tartare came with a fried egg on top. Instead of an over-easy egg with a runny yolk that would mix with the tartare, this fried egg was grossly overcooked. It belonged in an Asian fried rice dish and not on top of steak tartare (in my opinion). The texture and flavor of the hard cooked fried egg didn’t go well with the tartare. Also, the tartare came with naan bread. The bread they provided was a very crispy flatbread, but not what I would consider naan. True naan bread has yoghurt in the dough and has a crispy side and chewy side (like Texas toast). This was a flatbread that was more like cracker. It was very good, but I don’t know that I would call it naan.
After having the oysters on the tartare, we ordered some more. They came out on the half shell with cocktail sauce and a delicious mignonette. They were really delicious.
Overall, the dining experience was okay. Two of the items we ordered were great. One item we wanted wasn’t available and another items was underwhelming.
Service was acceptable, but nothing outstanding. With how empty the restaurant was, I would have expected everyone to be a bit more attentive.
Now, on to my biggest issue. My friend has a gluten issue. Normally, this is not a problem. Many restaurants now offer other options. Normally, instead of bread or crackers, they can provide corn tortilla chips or potato chips. Knife did not have either. The only thing they were able to provide was some pieces of endive for my friend to have with her steak tartare. It really doesn’t seem like it would be difficult to thinly slice a few potatoes and drop them in the fryer for a few minutes so that a person with a gluten issue can enjoy a bread free option. This may be something for management to consider.
Finally, on the way out, our bartender suggested that next time we call ahead to see if they have the bone marrow. Honestly, I don’t think this should be the customer’s responsibility, but I do understand why the bartender would make the suggestion.
Overall, I would rate our experience well below what I would expect from a Prime restaurant.
