First let me start by saying the entire staff was AMAZING! Top notch customer service from the time my family and I entered the building until the time we left! The hostess (I didn’t catch her name but it starts with an A) greeted us with a friendly smile and assured us our wait to be seated wouldn’t be long which it was not. Let’s move to our waiter David (Mr. Mississippi!) he was super helpful on suggesting what we should order. He gave his honest opinion on each dish and was a lot of fun to interact with! He kept checking on us when each appetizer came out to see how we liked it as well as our food. When I stated my greens was mostly juice he offered to take them back and bring me out another one. He said “I want to make sure my tables leave full” that statement let me know he truly cares about his customer’s experience which is often times rare in a black establishment (I hate to say it but it’s the truth) so when you go in there ask for David! Now let’s get down to the food - The complimentary cornbread muffins were amazing! They served them with a butter spread that had a hint of honey! It was soooooooooo good! And they served them in these tiny skillets which I thought were super cute ☺️ As an appetizer we ordered the collard green egg rolls and fried green tomatoes. Them egg rolls was SLAPPIN’ super flavorful and absolutely delicious!!! 😋 It was like an entire party in my mouth! Best egg roll that’s ever graced my palate! It’s a MUST TRY! The fried green tomatoes were small and thin but they were delicious. The breading was seasoned very well and the SGK sauce was phenomenal! I will say I wish they cut the tomatoes a little thicker and they were larger in size but taste wise they did not disappoint! 🔥🔥🔥 For our entree we all ordered the Southern Bumpkin which was meatloaf with brown gravy on a top of mashed potatoes with yams, greens, Mac and cheese . The meatloaf was mushy and SUPER SALTY 🥺 I wish the meatloaf would be a little firmer then it was. It literally looked like and had the texture of Purina wet dog food. DO NOT ORDER THE MEATLOAF 🙅🏽♀️🙅🏽♀️. The greens were packed with flavor and had a nice kick to them they were GOOOOOOD!! The yams were cooked to perfection! Not too sweet just RIGHT! Now let’s talk about this Mac and cheese that came out late but lukewarm. It was runny and SALTY SALTY SALTY OMG 😳 by the time I left there I had a headache because I know my blood pressure went up due to the amount of salt in the food. We did order some oxtails to go and they were good (surprisingly they weren’t super salty they had just the right amount of seasoning) This place has so much potential to be the BEST soul food restaurant in Plano! I would HIGHLY suggest the owner or head cook revisit the recipes and CUT BACK ON THE SALT. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Yes the food holds a LOT of flavor but the salt was overpowering. I will return for sure because the customer service and atmosphere was on point but I won’t order the meatloaf or Mac and cheese. And due to the saltiness of the food is why I rated them a 3 star vs 5 star.

First time visiting Southern Gourmet and was looking forward to it after hearing good reviews from customer service to the food. It was my friend’s second visit and unfortunately it will be her last. The location has adequate seating, lighting, music and decor. We arrived an hour before closing which isn’t always great. It did take a moment to be noticed at the hostess stand and seated. After we were seated, we were not told who our server would be. After sitting for awhile we had to ask for a server, mind you they close in a hour, so we definitely wanted to get our order in. Once a server came over we were told they had no more Catfish or oxtails.. unacceptable. We settled on chicken and waffles, collared green egg rolls, shrimp and grits, gumbo, seasoned fries and okra. Two mini cornbread muffins and butter came out first on a cute mini cast iron skillet which was ironic because the cornbread was cold. Would’ve tasted better hot. Later, a server explained our order had not gone through which meant a delay in getting our food. By this time one of the ladies in our group was no longer interested in her shrimp and grits. She requested the order to be removed. A few minutes later our orders started to arrive. My chicken and waffle was good, the seasoned waffle fries were hot and very good, the collared green egg rolls were my favorite and the gumbo was ok. Back to the Shrimp and grits, I’m guessing someone from management came over to see if the person who ordered shrimp and grits would like to keep her order, even take it home. My friend explained she was no longer interested after the lengthy wait and was no longer hungry. The other person at our table said she would take the order and asked to have it put on her tab. When it was time to pay, the shrimp and grits were taken off. I don’t know if she heard my friend say she would pay for the shrimp and grits or if it was removed as a gesture to say sorry for the delay. Anyway, this place does have potential, but should take some time to train their staff on providing better customer service, the food should come out a tad bit faster, definitely hot and not at room temperature. I’m rooting for this place to succeed!!! If you haven’t been please give them a try! I’ll do plan to visit again for a second review because this could’ve been an off night for them.

While traveling to Dallas to visit Family, I came across some Tik Tok posts that highly recommend this place for a Delicious Soulful Soul Food Experience,, so I had to try it out. Mouth was watering for me some Collard Green Egg Rolls. Got there at 3:45 on a Wednesday and by 4:20pm started ordering away. Waiter stopped me and said, " Sorry Sir, but we don't have any Collard Greens,,,, yet. Maybe in about 3hrs. I was like Wowww, are u serious Bruh! So, I then asked for the Brisket Sliders for an appetizer,, and the Young man stopped me again,, Sorry Sir, but we don't have any Brisket today either. Those two misses should have been my Red flag. I had a party of 7 with me and we just drove 45min from Red Oak to get there so we pushed on. Tried the Ox Tails,, Tasty but very Sweet indeed, Mac n Cheese came to the table luke warm and toppled with cold shredded cheese. Although the Mac n 🧀 was Tasty,, by time I got to my 3rd scoop it was already cold. Others in my party had the Fish (cold), Gumbo (very little liquid) and Chicken n Waffles (steaming hot and very Sweet like it was Honey Fried Chicken). Only food item 🔥 was the Chicken n Waffles. Drinks that were ordered, sat at the end of the bar for atleast 10min. There was no communication between the young lady makin our drinks with our waiter. Each time I had to get his attention to tell him that our drinks are up at the end of the bar waiting to be picked up. Two items that were quite Delicious and 🔥to order was the Fried Okra and Fried Green 🍅 Tomatoes. In closing I think half my group left with a new case of High Blood Psi and the others left with a new case Diabetes. The music was on point, I just think that the staff in all was not. Approximately 24 patrons at any given moment, so they were not crowed at all. Sorry Southern Gourmet Kitchen, but today was a Total Miss on various levels. Hope you get things worked out between your staff and cook / food preparers. Total Billl w/tip $276.23. Overall, Not well spent. 24-Aug,22

Food was good, but the serving size for takeout is not worth the price. I paid $20 for a small piece of catfish, red beans and rice with sausage with 2 small pieces of sausage. I probably had 3 scoops of rice. How is that worth $20? Price equivalent to Pappadeauxs but not Pappadeauxs servings. If y’all gone charge high prices make sure people get what they are paying for. I probably won’t be back cause I was expecting a big piece of fish at least, more sausage in the beans, more rice. It was worth about $8 to be honest. The people were great though, very friendly! The portion sizes just need to be consistent across the board I saw pics of good serving sizes thinking that’s what I would get. Edit: in response to the owners message. I wouldn’t spend $20 if I went inside a store and asked for 1 tiny catfish filet, bought a bag of rice and scooped out 3/4 cup and did the math, bought a pack of sausage and cut 2 small pieces off then did the math, the beans were plentiful but beans aren’t expensive but it wasn’t a whole bag worth maybe a cup, do the math on it.. The other ingredients that I already own/needed wouldn’t add up up to a total value of $20. Try again. Y’all problem is you take more energy making snide remarks in response to the facts instead of using that same energy to have consistency in serving sizes across the board. But thank you for the response it definitely helped me make up mind about visiting or recommending your business. You spoke facts when you said you will never be Pappadeauxs, you won’t be, or any of your other competitors that give people enough to come back for. Added: pic of the fish after a piece was broken off it.

The worst experience of my life. The food was cold nor was it cooked all the way. Music was too loud. They let the phone ring. My food just sat in the kitchen while the bartender and host/server stood around. I can hear the manager or owner whoever she was yelling at everyone but not solving one problem. I also overheard employees talking about not being paid. I feel soo sorry for the people who work there. This place needs a lot of help and I don’t recommend eating here. P.S update it’s hilarious you can respond to a review on google but not a answer the phone at the restaurant nor your own phone number I have screenshots proof of missed payments and more but you’re more worried about a review because of the truth that happens in this place that doesn’t even deserve to be called a business. Including the one of you telling my boyfriend to control me from leaving a review. please play with someone else. I also have proof with contact of other employees who left and current employees due to the same exact issues trust and believe it’s not anything you want to deal with. Not to mention you responded 2 weeks after I made the review and have the audacity to say I’m chaos plus I don’t have a cousin that made a review sweetie if you learn how to do right by people then you won’t assume. Btw a review is suppose to have a name nobody is hiding from you. Plenty of more proof if you would like to respond to all of these

My experience from start to finish! I arrived around 1:10 pm, was greeted, and asked to wait a few minutes until some tables were cleaned. Another couple arrived at the same time as me and my husband, and we got seated at the same time. Our drinks arrived quickly, and the waitress instructed us to scan the code for the menu. We ordered appetizers fried green tomatoes and smoked turkey collard green eggroll. I noticed it took a while, but no big deal. I'm enjoying the vibe, the music is excellent, and four tables are being served, including me and my husband, so there is no crowd, so this should go well. We ordered our food about 15 minutes into the visit; all the food was okay, hot, and well-presented nice presentation. My issue By the time we got our entrees, the white couple we had walked in with had eaten and had already left. Okay, cool again, no worries, it happens. However, you must ensure you do your job if you demand a 20% tip on your tickets. Once our food was brought to the table, the waitress never returned to fill our drinks and ask if we needed anything else. As a matter of fact, she sat at the table behind us and had her lunch. I wanted to ask her for a refill but didn't want to interrupt her eating. I was in shock. Where do they do that at? Needless to say, I will not be back at your prices; you better make sure your service match.
