On Wednesday May 21st 2025 me and my best friend decided to go have lunch at one of our favorite places on our list which is Southern gourmet kitchen this place was the second on our list of supporting black businesses we haven't been there since last year so on entering we realize it wasn't a lot of people in there like it normally is it was only three customers which kind of surprise us usually around lunch time it's crowded but anyway looking at the menu we noticed that it has changed so it took us a while to decide what we wanted to order so we both finally ordered the same thing which was the cat in the hat and I ordered the smoked collard green egg rolls which is something I always order every time I go which I've been having a taste for the egg rolls so it took a while before the waitress came and took our order so she asked us what we wanted to drink so my friend got the Kool-Aid and I got peach tea so once she brought the drink my peach tea look so dark it look like it was coke or Dr pepper something like that and it was just a little taste of peach in it so finally I got my egg rolls and I taste the egg rolls the egg rolls was horrible it did not have smoked turkey in it it just had greens and cheese the lady that was in charge told me that they had the wrong cheese in the egg rolls so finally we got our order The cat in the hat so I began to eat my food i taste the fish it was too salty so I called the waitress over and told her that the fish was too salty that I couldn't eat it she asked me did I want anything else and I told her no because the egg rolls don't taste good but I'll pay for them I don't want anything else because it killed my appetite so she went and got the manager I guess or the person in charge she came to the table and asked me about the fish so I told her it was too salty and I didn't want anything else so she asked me did I want anything else and I told her no so she just kind of stood there for a minute and didn't say anything so she walked off so I asked the waiter was I going to be charged for the fish she said yes I said why would I have to pay for it if I didn't eat it she told me that the manager are the person that was in charge tell her that the customers at the other table didn't complain about the fish being salty and my friend didn't complain about her fish being salty I still have to pay for mines I told her just because they didn't complain we all don't have the same taste bud and I told her they might eat a lot of salt I don't so she told me I still had to pay for it it they policy no refund so I asked her where is it at she said it was on the counter at the front door she walks over there and look and didn't find it she goes back there where the other person was pulled it up on her phone to show it to me is no refund so long story short I paid for our meal I definitely would not go back there anymore because I bragged about this place the first time we went and I told everybody they should go try it out I brought several friends there and I would not recommend anybody to go back there or go there and for some reason the waitress seem a little confused but I still gave her a tip after I left I spent $80 in some change. And it was only two people working there. I can take this place off of my list of good food I was very...
Read moreFirst let me start by saying the entire staff was AMAZING! Top notch customer service from the time my family and I entered the building until the time we left! The hostess (I didn’t catch her name but it starts with an A) greeted us with a friendly smile and assured us our wait to be seated wouldn’t be long which it was not.
Let’s move to our waiter David (Mr. Mississippi!) he was super helpful on suggesting what we should order. He gave his honest opinion on each dish and was a lot of fun to interact with! He kept checking on us when each appetizer came out to see how we liked it as well as our food. When I stated my greens was mostly juice he offered to take them back and bring me out another one. He said “I want to make sure my tables leave full” that statement let me know he truly cares about his customer’s experience which is often times rare in a black establishment (I hate to say it but it’s the truth) so when you go in there ask for David!
Now let’s get down to the food - The complimentary cornbread muffins were amazing! They served them with a butter spread that had a hint of honey! It was soooooooooo good! And they served them in these tiny skillets which I thought were super cute ☺️ As an appetizer we ordered the collard green egg rolls and fried green tomatoes. Them egg rolls was SLAPPIN’ super flavorful and absolutely delicious!!! 😋 It was like an entire party in my mouth! Best egg roll that’s ever graced my palate! It’s a MUST TRY! The fried green tomatoes were small and thin but they were delicious. The breading was seasoned very well and the SGK sauce was phenomenal! I will say I wish they cut the tomatoes a little thicker and they were larger in size but taste wise they did not disappoint! 🔥🔥🔥
For our entree we all ordered the Southern Bumpkin which was meatloaf with brown gravy on a top of mashed potatoes with yams, greens, Mac and cheese . The meatloaf was mushy and SUPER SALTY 🥺 I wish the meatloaf would be a little firmer then it was. It literally looked like and had the texture of Purina wet dog food. DO NOT ORDER THE MEATLOAF 🙅🏽♀️🙅🏽♀️. The greens were packed with flavor and had a nice kick to them they were GOOOOOOD!! The yams were cooked to perfection! Not too sweet just RIGHT! Now let’s talk about this Mac and cheese that came out late but lukewarm. It was runny and SALTY SALTY SALTY OMG 😳 by the time I left there I had a headache because I know my blood pressure went up due to the amount of salt in the food. We did order some oxtails to go and they were good (surprisingly they weren’t super salty they had just the right amount of seasoning)
This place has so much potential to be the BEST soul food restaurant in Plano! I would HIGHLY suggest the owner or head cook revisit the recipes and CUT BACK ON THE SALT. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE! Yes the food holds a LOT of flavor but the salt was overpowering.
I will return for sure because the customer service and atmosphere was on point but I won’t order the meatloaf or Mac and cheese. And due to the saltiness of the food is why I rated them a 3...
Read moreI'm extremely disappointed. From the door, I should have turned around. CONS I made a reservation through their TOAST booking site, and they (2 different hostess) couldn't find it and asked me if I booked through Eventbrite. I said no, then pulled it up on my phone because they thought we were a walk-in. I was then asked if we wanted to sit at the bar. I made a reservation for a table so that's what I wanted. The host wasn't too pleasant, and it felt more like she was squeezing us at a table vs. seating someone who made a reservation. My first mind told me to walk out then! Many of the options that I came there for and would have chosen were not available, so I chose the $20 4 jumbo shrimp basket with one side. Also noted that I did not request for the shrimp to be fried extra crispy but no big deal. I RECEIVED 6 little shrimp along with the side. $20 for THAT? SMH. I asked our waitress about this discrepancy and she couldn't even come up with a feasible explanation, and after seeing her struggle to explain, I realized that it was not her fault, so I let it slide. Food and drinks took a good little while to come out. Upon my pulling up the check to cash out, I went over it. My gf ordered and RECEIVED ONE $15 order of the 3 egg rolls, and I was charged for 2. The second egg roll order that I did not ask for nor receive was $14. The waitress tried to explain that it was infact canceled out on their end and that I'd pay the corrected amount with her. Negative. On my end, I saw that my bill was $116.50 when it should have been $102.50 (minus the $14 ghost order). On her POS device, I was still charged $110.50, which was still $8 more than I should have paid. It's a minor chunk of change, but the principle is the point here. Charge me for what I ordered and nothing else! I still gave a recommended tip because the server was nice. In total, I left there paying $126, and I will not be back. The music was extremelyyyy loud. The website does state that there is a DJ during the time that we went and that if you wanted a quiet setting, then to come at the earlier times. We wanted to come and hear music and feel the vibes, but I didn't expect to experience that level of loudness. I don't even think music is this loud in the clubs! My gf and I literally had to scream at each other across a tiny table, and we were seated way at the front door, far from the dj.
No I did not ask for a manager because I had just made up in my mind that I'd take this L and just never visit again.
Pros: Food was ok, vibe and atmosphere was cool, the bartenders were definitely a vibe, and our...
