I was visiting our local liquor chain store when I met a co-owner of the 26-degree brewery. He was handing out samples of his IPAs and offered me a taste.
We entered into an eloquent discussion on beers. Basically I do not like IPAs and this one did not disappoint; however, whilst I was licking my armpit to get the taste out of my mouth, we talked about what I liked.
I explained that I love cigars but not maduros, I love whisky but not Ryes, I love dark beers, but not wines, when he smiled. I explained its about what I like and thereby enjoy, much to the chagrin of those that say my palette isn’t “refined” enough. I particularly enjoy whiskies that have been in aged in wine barrels.
He brought me to his car and beamed. He pulled out a quart of Erick the Great, an Imperial Stout finished in Cabernet barrels. All he asked was to tell him what I thought of it. So here I am.
As with all Imperial Stouts, this one held a high abv, 11.2%. Dark, rich notes, and with a gentle finish. I’m not a person that can rattle off actual flavor notes, but I can use other words. To me the taste is reminiscent of happiness. Have you ever taken a midnight swim in a cool pond on a hot night, wondering if the date you brought with you would join you for a skinny dipping frolic? THAT is what I tasted and you should too. I guarantee that after your taste, you’ll smile at the memory of your youth when all things are...
Read moreVery nice updates to the building and menu. Went twice in a 2 week period, once on a Tuesday and on a Friday. The first Tuesday, the panthers were playing and they had the game on. They closed before the game ended which was disappointing but understandable as it was a Tuesday.
The next time on Friday, the Panthers played again. At 9:30, before the 3rd period started and the closing time of 10pm, they were closing down and encouraging people to leave. Felt like the staff was scrambling to get out at 10 on the dot. When I asked why they would close so early, during our home town teams playoff run, it was met with hostility saying “we don’t advertise to watch games here” and if we didn’t like it, we can take our business elsewhere, simply for asking a question.
Many breweries stay open until at least midnight, especially on the weekends, not to mention kicking people out in the middle of our hometown teams’ game that’s generating the bar revenue. Really wish they would just the staff to a few people late at night like every establishment does and stay open a bit later.
Update; we went back for the panthers game and it was fantastic! Food was great, experience was too. Really appreciate the ownership listening to customer reviews. Will be a regular here...
