I am Cuban and have had trouble finding good carribean food since moving to PDX. There are few Cuban spots and this is the winner. I can cook Cuban food at home so I am a harsh critic. The menu is gluten and vegetarian friendly. A Cuban sandwich is actually an American invention from Tampa Bay. I tend to avoid it on menus because it is never done properly. However, I saw it come out to a table and realized they actually prepare it properly. I have ordered just about everything on the menu and have been pleased with every item I have had. Cuban food is flavorful but not extremely spicy or over seasoned. If you prefer extra spice or seasoning you can easily remedy that by asking for more spicy mojo, regular mojo or other sauces. As a Cuban, I can honestly say that I come here when I do not feel like cooking or searching for certain items to make particular dishes. This is a counter service establishment and the fountain drinks have not worked since I have been coming to the establishment. They do have bottled and canned beverages, including tamarind soda. However, they do not have Cuban sodas, such as Materva, Jupina, and Iron Beer, which would be a nice touch. Otherwise, it is the best that PDX has and the ingredients are freshly made to order. They even have fresh juices. So check them out. You will be full and...
Read moreGreat service from a friendly host / counter server and tasty food that hit the spot! My partner and I are visiting from TX & we checked out the Mississippi Ave location.
Our host / counter server was kind (and had beautiful curls)! They let us know what items were unavailable immediately – which I appreciated, because you can’t believe how many places we went to that withheld that info until the last second. Our host was also courteous with all customers, including a guy who was being a jerk to them & trying to order drinks past cutoff.
I ordered a happy hour half chicken sandwich with tostones and mini empanadas. The service was speedy and the plate was scrumptious and filling: my favorite was the guava with cheese empanada, which was very sweet. We enjoyed eating on the patio and the nice breeze.
Definitely check it out and props again...
Read moreDisappointed overall with the food quality and price. The yellow rice and beans were good, but my chicken was entirely burnt on one side + I only got one piece of chicken for the plate. According to the person taking our orders, the chicken plate was supposed to have more chicken compared to the bowl which my friend got. However, when I took my meal out of the takeaway container, it was the size of her bowl, though I paid more though for mine. The Caribbean salad also was entirely cucumber, though there was supposed to be some more ingredients to it. For the price and quality of the food, it’s definitely not worth $18. I’m really bummed because I didn’t get what I ordered & what I got was...
