Edited from a previous 3 star review that is still posted after this one. After the second time here im done for good. Took forever to be seated at the not busy bar. Ignored aggressively by several staff members. Got drinks right away when i stood up to leave when i was irritated w the inattentiveness of the staff, but then it took almost 30 mins after that for someone to even ladel a bowl of miso soup for me 5 ft away. I wish id still just left. The food is just not good, esp for the price point. All the reviews about this being peoples favorite sushi place truly embarass me. I know its subjective, but they have piss poor taste if thats the case. I do appreciate the selection of vegan rolls, but its just not very good food. That coupled w the abysmal service and terrible price point for the quality i just cannot ever come here again. I left the worst tip ive ever left in my life (15%) and wanted to tip less(they deserved less.) Being in customer service for 25 years i just couldnt bring myself to tip less. Overall the meal took over an hour sitting at the bar when it wasnt a full restaurant to get 3 rolls and a sake pour and beer. Thats absolutely ridiculous. On top of all the shortcomings i had to (hungrily) listen to a waitress complain about having to do her job that she wasnt doing very well. Avoid this place if you like decent service and decent food. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Previous review: It took 10 mins sitting at the bar to even be spoken to. When i asked if it was a really busy night, the server said it wasnt really. So, i guess it gets more slammed than that and i would assume service is pretty slow overall-something to consider if youre wanting a quick meal, like i was. Price was just ok for very mid grade sushi. Its pdx-theres not a ton of dazzling sushi and its only surprising to me when its actually really good. The best roll i ate was vegetarian. Looks like the happy hour would be a more satisfying price point for the quality, but for what i got it wasnt completely unreasonable dinner bill with drinks. Ok sake selection. Almost every japanese place ive been in this city has only regional sake, they actually had some options from japan. Had a really yummy cocktail-fun take on a manhattan. Overall vibe was somewhat friendly. Bathrooms were clean. I will only come back bc its across the street from a venue. Wouldnt go out of my...
Read moreIf I could give 0 stars I would! GO DOWN THE STREET TO SAMURAI FOR WAY BETTER SUSHI, VIBES & SERVICE! — Raven is AMAZING, they won’t racially profile you & had no issue serving us our drinks with our shots as we deserved ! I’m kind of glad I had such a trrrible experience at UCHU or I would have never stumbled upon SAMARAI**
My friends and I .. a respectful group of nursing students (including a Mexican man, an African woman, and myself, an African American woman) experienced racial profiling, condescension, and false claims about OLCC law at this establishment on Juneteenth.
We ordered three shots.. the server rudely said , so 1 shot ?? Because one of my friend who didn’t have his ID & also he didn’t try to order anything. She just made assumptions which was so awkward!!! The bartender falsely claimed it was “OLCC law” that only one person could order a shot at a time, which is completely untrue. As someone who has bartended in Oregon and knows the OLCC regulations, I called that out — and also called out the fact that we were clearly being racially profiled.
Rather than correcting the lie or de-escalating, the bartender and server spoke to us in a condescending and nasty tone, then refused to serve us altogether, despite us being calm and respectful. The server was immediately weird and tense from the start — the tone shifted the moment we walked in. We were treated with suspicion and hostility that had nothing to do with our behavior and everything to do with how we looked.
On Juneteenth, of all days, this kind of disrespect and racial bias is especially painful. We are nursing students who work hard to uplift our communities — and we deserve to be treated with dignity, not suspicion.
I will be filing formal complaints with both the OLCC and the Better Business Bureau (BBB). This was not just bad service — it was intentional, discriminatory, and based on a lie.
If you believe in fairness, professionalism, or human decency, I suggest you take your...
Read moreMy companion and I were begrudgingly greeted by some bed-headed, loose shirted, bleach-tipped wraith of a man with a moustache to match. Instant bad energy when trying a place for the first time. Thankfully we were seated and handled by a waitress who at least has some respect for her job. We made it just in time for happy hour, and it honestly is the way to go as quite a large portion of their menu (more than enough to get your fill) is listed and you get a buck off of a Ranier, Sapporo, or a Kirin! I tried the Karaage and it was quite crunchy but the sauce was the standout...something citrusy and a little spicey (along the lines of cinnamon). After that it was the gyoza which was fried perfection aided by a tasty and tangy soy sauce mix. The main course was the ramen...I wasn't disappointed or really thrilled by it. It tasted a little more earthy than I was expecting and smelled a little like dishwater...weird but not a deal-breaker. My partner got the Udon as the main course and that was quite pleasant smelling and tasting! Maybe I got a bad batch? We also shared two rolls - the dynamite and the soft shell rolls and both were quite delicious. All in all, likely a 3 1/2 star as the atmosphere was more space/underground hipster and the staff was spotty in terms of service and the food wasn't all amazing. Still, for under $45 you can get two appetizers, two entrees, two beers, and two sushi rolls...pretty...
