It was an interesting experience. I've always heard a lot of hype over Miss Delta's - and for once, we had a chance to try it out when the wait wasnt ridiculous (This location does not accept reservations).
First, the restaurant itself. It is a small and interesting space, a lot of two person tables and not much more than that. They play music throughout the space, and for some reason there was like five-ten noticable minutes were there was nothing and it was almost got uncomfortably quiet. There's a bar that takes up a good chunk of the space but beyond that I can't really recall any kind of major decor to enhance the atmosphere. But maybe I wasn't paying much attention, as I was starving.
Together, we got hush puppies as a starter. I personally got the burger, with bacon and the onion rings - plus a side of fries (pictured) and my significant other got the fried chicken with a side of collard greens w/ pulled pork and mac and cheese.
The hush puppies were good, the sauce was stellar.
Her chicken was unfortunately cooked for way too long in the frier. The collard greens were okay, the pork they topped it with was extremely dry. The mac and cheese was good!
My burger was hard to eat. It had lettuce, tomato, burger, BBQ sauce, and cheese of your choice (I went with cheddar). You had the ability to add pork? (Can't remember), onion rings, and bacon for another $2 each. The happy hour burger does NOT include fries so you have to order that on its own.
And it was okay. My burger was cooked as requested, the cheese was fantastic, bacon was good, and the onion rings were cooked perfectly. Unfortunately, it was such a big burger with the onion rings it was impossible to eat cleanly - normally I'm good about handling my food but by the time I was done half the ingredients were on the plate. I think if I were to do this again, I'd skip the burger and try the barbeque sandwiches.
The crinkle cut fries were as good as I think you can get with crinkle cut fries. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside - paired with a delicious sauce. (Honestly the sauce made this quite enjoyable).
The service was fine - the waitress asked if we wanted drinks or appetizers to start, came back to take our order and that was about it. We had ran out of water and had been there for a while - we didn't see her again until we were done. It was 4:30-ish, and the restaurant wasn't particularly busy. Maybe I'm just spoiled but being checked in on every now and then can be nice, like if I wanted to buy a cocktail or something else (like more water).
Lastly, this wasn't part of my experience but we witnessed someone elses - this older gentleman had something that looked quite burned. The staff said they'd check it out for him, when it was clear from even where we were sitting it that it was black. Eventually, when he came to pay, he asked to speak with the manager (I'm assuming) at hand and requested that he inform his staff and that he provide a discount. I think the manager was cooperative, saying that he didn't know that was happening, apologized and it sounded like they came to a compromise.
Overall, it was alright. Would I wait in line for half an hour here vs any of the other restaurants around Mississippi? Probably not. But if a friend was coming here and invited me a long, I'd give it another go and see if my rating holds true.
For those looking for some similar restaurants in town, I recommend alternatively looking at Southland Whiskey Kitchen in West Portland and The Smokin' Oak...
Read moreFirst meal in Oregon, we just touched down from the East Coast and ran here. Starving is an understatement!!!
Let's Talk About It.....
I'm not sure how I felt about the decor, but the setting was perfect for what we were looking for.....good food! You can see the kitchen. Outdoor seating is an option also.
My Order: Fried Orka / Chicken and Waffles / Side sampler (mac and cheese, collard greens, and mashers with mushroom gravy with corn bread
Babe Order: Side salad with apple cider vinegar dressing / burnt ends , rice and beans with meat, collard greens with meat, and cornbread
Hands Down, this was a great first meal. He loved the choice influenced by TikTok/IG searches
If you eat fried orka at any point in your life, just order it, you will not be disappointed. And the peach color dipping sauce was a delicious pair. The white sauce was good, just too garlicky for us. I did mix both, and it was OK, too...
One plate - waffle and chicken on top... a lot of breading the skin had the flavor the meat lacked slightly, but it was good for me since I cut out chicken from my normal food options. LET'S TALK ABOUT IT.....the waffle was so delicious. I wanted to ask for another, but I cut bread too. Self-control was on high!!!!
Sample side - genius idea for an order option. We loved the COLLARD GREENS- vinegar base seasoned well and slightly spicy. Now I can't eat spicy food but I couldn't pass them up, no reaction so I was happy. The MASHERS are mashed potatoes I opt for mushroom gravy. This was just a NO for me. I added salt and pepper, still a NO.... The gravy looked crazy and potatoes were either instant or old, I couldn't figure it out and didn't eat anymore. Then, because Babe wanted to taste the MAC&CHEESE I ordered as my 3rd side. Mmmmmm, just see the photo. It is not a southern Mac & Cheese, where it's a process and baked. BUT hear Babe out now. He tried it and said it was different but good. I do not eat cheese or Mac and cheese judge ya momma, not me.....NOW.... The cornbread was dry as it crumbled in our hand, we didn't eat it, might have been a cornmeal mix muffin...it had little black specs in it....man I was mad! I cook southern corn bread, and baby, let me tell you... never had black specks or crumbled, so it had me off..
Babe got his collard greens with meat (pork). He must wasn't feeling the pork sitting on top of his collard he ate around it. Well, he thought it was mixed in like cooked with the ham bone....lol nope! (See the photo) However, Babe crushed the burnt ends and the beans from the Rice and beans...it had meat on top as well he ate around it, thought it was mixed in how we normally cook it.
I only saw 1 cook, by the way. We didn't wait long for food. This alone was a plus.
The meat on top is because they will give the option of veggie / meat with sides. I just realized it while I selected my photos.
The server was so sweet and helpful with the order process. There were so many options I struggled to pick.
We wanted drinks, but we are here for the week, pace ourselves...lol we have a lot going on, U.S. Olympic Tryouts and more spots to hit.
Bathroom: clean and cute wall art Seating: Seat yourself They have a pick-up area, and they do catering Price: for 2 reasonable
5 stars were missed because of the Mashers and Mac & Cheese I would give...
Read moreWe have been coming to Miss Delta for years and have enjoyed the food, service and their atmosphere until tonight.
We have always started off with drinks and appetizers for the table. When we ordered our cocktails, we were not asked if we wanted a tall cocktail and yet were served a tall cocktail. At every restaurant we have visited, the standard cocktail would come as a short cocktail unless asked specifically for a tall. When we ordered our second round, we asked for the standard short cocktail and our waiter Micheal R stated “you should’ve told me you wanted short cocktails”. We were shocked to have received that comment as the standard cocktail comes as a short cocktail (he also was our bartender).
When we were ready to order our dinner, I was looking forward to ordering their “Mashers” as a side. Michael R, told us that they were out of this side dish. Instead of suggesting like an excellent waiter would “let me check if the kitchen is still out of them” he waited for me to order another side. He stated “ya this often happens when we have a busy brunch”. So I ordered another side without hesitation. About 10 minutes later, another couple sat down next to us and ordered that same side dish (Mashers) and were served those Mashers I was told “we are out of Mashers” by Michael R. When he came to our table, I asked “you just told me that they were out of Mashers and the table right next to us, just were served those Mashers”. His response was “well, they were out of them, but have them now, would you like me to switch out what I served you ?” So my response was “sure, thank you”. He then took off the table one of my side dishes (collard greens), turned around, went to the kitchen and returned (minutes) with the Mashers and tossed onto the table those Mashers and walked away without a word!
After our family consumed the dinner, he returned to the table in a rush and left our bill without asking if we wanted to order a dessert, which we always do order and enjoy. We at that point were not happy with Michael R’s service and paid the bill and left with a bad taste of service in our mouths.
Michael R must have been having a bad day and we certainly understand this, but to toss in anger a dish at a customers table, is unacceptable. We would like to give this restaurant another chance, since we have been customers for years.
Today is 10/29/20(two years later) and we have not ever received an apology and or response to this review. This will show you the type of management exists...
