Was dying for some delectable dimsums and this place delivered!! Tried a lot of items ranging from soup dumplings, pork and vegetable dimsum, bbq pork in steamed bun, bbq pork in baked bun, shrimp (har gow), sticky rice, jin do pork chop, soy noodles, shrimp in rice paper, shiu mai and so many more. The Jin do pork chop and soy noodles were excellent and completely unexpected in a dimsum binge! Was not too busy of a place. Went for dinner and was pleasantly surprised to see that they had large tables for families/groups. The restaurant had a 'By family, for families' vibe. We were only 3 so we sat by the window in a small and cozy booth. Atmosphere was nice and simple and food was delicious. The soy noodles reminded us of street noodles back home which was great. Service was good. They kept bringing out tray after tray after tray and taking away the finished ones. Water was always refilled promptly. The tea was a great palate cleanser. Holding back 1 star for the dessert since they did not have any options that particular night. They ran out of egg custards too. So i hope to try them next time along with some other items that we did not try this time, like the egg cream buns and the broccoli. Our bill came out to a paltry $20/head for a gazillion variety of delicious dimsums and those nostalgic street noodles and the savory jin do pork. We were pleasantly surprised, grateful and satiated! Oh btw, if you are parking to the side, do not be worried about the Oregon Lottery sign on the window, its the...
Read moreWe're from LA, so I'm sorry(?) and also - this is thus far the best Chinese restaurant we've been to in Portland in the 8 years we've lived here. We settled on thinking we just won't experience the same dining for Chinese food in this city. Soo la voo.
We've been to all the spots you're thinking of and nope, Gold Garden was better tonight. Even my Chinese/Filipina mother said this is better than [that spot you're thinking of]. Sooo flavorful, huge portions, and such friendly service, even understanding our 7mo and 6.8yo had needs to address too. If you're also used to and wondering about restaurant 'health' grades in Portland, this spot received 100/A+ with its last inspection.
These portions are family style and the menu with dining experience is just like spots we grew up going to, down to the soda can with straw.
We ordered: deep fried crab Hong Kong style with garlic (omg delicious!), enoki mushroom and tofu, Chinese broccoli, salt and pepper shrimp and squid, soup dumplings, fish maw soup, and duck with pineapple (not our fav). Yes, we had a ton of leftovers for the coming days - you know...
Read moreI have been here multiple times. Coming here with a group and eating the dishes as it arrives is really a treat The food was fresh, piping hot and so well made. The serving is largish. The menu encompasses a wide range of cooking techniques. Look at the board listing the specials near the counter. They had a special that featured lobster fried rice or lobster lo mein for $19.95. A bargain. Actually, we plan to go there for dinner tonight just to splurge. The combo dry style fried rice was great as were all the five dishes we ordered. It had a smokiness that isn't often found in other restaurants. The restaurant is rather old and tired, but it's the food that.that stands out. The owner is there all the time. She covers all roles, lol. I will update later tonight...
