PLEASE READ (REVISION) BELOW:

My top favorite "dive bar"/Chinese restaurant in all of Portland Oregon. Affordable beverages and food! Friendly service/friendly patrons. What it lacks in polish and atmosphere, it makes up for in charm, comfort, affordability and friendliness. I think the best food deal is to order one of their combination plates. It's above average and they serve you generous portions.

If you are lucky enough to visit on a Sunday, Tuesday or Wednesday . . As a casual observer, you will likely find bartender (Alison) to be a very unique and twistedly funny server. LOVE this place . . especially, because of her. Tip your servers well. They deserve it!

Get there earlyish . . as they close around 10:00 - 11:00 most evenings.

REVISION:

i am leaving my original review up . . as this is how this place (was) for several years . . however, when going in two evenings ago . . I was treated very rudely by one of the longtime bartenders for no good reason what so ever. They were still open and I greeted the bartender very kindly . . in return . . before I could even ask for anything, she very curtly told me they were closing in 6 minutes, she had called last call 25 minutes ago and that she wanted to get out of there. I had noticed a trend of them closing earlier for some time but had no idea they were so lazy and RUDE about it. If I was the owner of this business, I would fire that bartender the second I found a replacement. Why have the open sign on and the doors unlocked, if you intend to be rude, not serve and DRIVE PEOPLE OUT, because you, the employee, want to go home early?!? Lazy, rude, KRAPPY SERVICE!

NOT . . . a HAPPY HOUSE!

Will not visit this place again until I talk with the owner.

So sad . . . many businesses and employees attitudes have declined and changed for the worse, since covid.

This very same bartender had served me drinks and food many times before and I tipped every time. I was a very loyal patron and helped promote this place through my work . . and then get stabbed in the back for it. Happy house is losing significant buisness because of this bartender/server's really poor, snarky,...

Initially I arrived at 11:30 a.m. when they opened. When I went inside I was told they wouldn't have any food ready for 30 minutes (which is 30 minutes after they opened). I left to consider other options, but returned to give this place a chance. The location resembles a dive bar which is what made me believe the food could be good. The excessive amounts of graffiti littering the outer walls were very unaplealing though. Even after reading several reviews, I chose to give this place a chance. They did serve Chinese, however the food was mediocre at best. The egg flour soup was basically water with some salt and a little bit of egg (very bland), the sweet and sour chicken was somewhat rubbery in texture and the breading was white as if it hadn't been cooked long enough. The pork fried rice was also bland, however mixed with the sweet and sour sauce and little soy sauce it was ok. An Oriental lady initially took my order, however did not allow me to chose a side for my meal and also did not show any interest in allowing me to order a drink other than water. She was not very relatable and didn't seem to care about my presence in the restaurant. I chose the sweet and sour chicken lunch special. When I ate, it was about noon, which was when she originally said the food would be ready. The amount of food was sufficient and the price point was good for a lunch special, however the quality and atmosphere need some work. I wouldn't return to this restaurant based off of today's experience and wouldn't...

I want to know what the girlfriend of mine who is severely disabled and needs a service animal to help her walk and see where she's going since we walked in there the bartender screamed at us get that dog out of here we tried to explain to her that she's a service animal and actually tried to show our paperwork and she said no I don't care get that damn dog out of here. The bartender was an idiot she had no right to throw us out but we didn't feel like fighting her because we were tired we just wanted to come in and play a little bit of poker and go home. But we never actually got a chance to play any of the video poker because she threw us out and would not listen to any of our explanations about her being a service animal. That bartender was rude disrespectful and a complete idiot. Businesses need to re-educate themselves about service animals what is real what is it and what people need. But with my girlfriend it's so obvious it's just ridiculous. But this bartender was having nothing of that I think it's wrong and I'm just really angry that don't go there if you need to service animal don't go there for disabled because they won't let you in the door. I go there a lot to play poker but because of this instance I'm never going to go back in there again I'm not going to give my money to a place that is so stupid about the disability laws and so disrespectful. My recommendation is that you just don't go there if I give your business to somebody that's that...

Wow!!! I gotta say this place took me off guard. The owner invited me to check it out, and I did. It's in a somewhat different location. The parking lot is cool. Upon entering, it had that Chinese restaurant feel. Was greeted upon entering, and the greeter who at the time was cutting string beans at the table asked was the order to go. I ordered chicken fried rice and waited. Now, on the other side, there was a bar that seemed to be kinda full. A lot of the people I saw go in and out, and they all seem like regulars. A lot of the people knew the staff, and some couples either sat down or went to the bar, which I would have to check out on my next visit because that chicken fried rice was so good. Fresh vegetables, shrimp was devained and cooked to perfection, and the rice was fluffy. None of the food tasted greasy, so Chinese restaurants need to take some notes from this place. Food was packaged with love in those boxes that kept it warm on the way home. Definitely will be coming here again and may become a regular.

We had a late dinner on a Sunday, the place was relatively quiet and the staff were very friendly and attentive. Tried Dinner B, generous portions for the price. The appetizers (bbq pork, fried shrimp, krab puffs) were very good, the spring rolls were good though different than I'm used to. The pork fried rice was a little bland, in my opinion could benefit from some green onion. But it still paired well with the general tso's chicken which has a variable spice depending on how much sauce you use. The Mongolian beef was a bit on the spicy side for me, though I'm a lightweight so others may enjoy it. Edit: next time I asked for it to be less spicy and it was lovely. The hot tea is hot! I'll definitely be returning

I was only warned afterwards that places with gambling slots wasn’t gonna have the best food. I waited a HOT minute for an order of spring rolls and an order of beef lo mein which was so underwhelming I was honestly shocked. The lo mein had ramen noodle type noodles (just so you get the picture) with even thinner strips of carrot. I was at least expecting an abundance of veggies but it looked like straight up noodles littered with some meat. The spring rolls were mid, that’s all I have to say. The staff was very friendly and the decor was cute. I took a pic of an appetizer while I was waiting because I expected to like the food and come back for more but I don’t believe I’ll return to happy house for Chinese food.
