I came at 8:55 and even though the sign said open they had the doors locked. And by the looks of if they had been packing up the food for quite a minute. I’m honestly tired of local businesses in this area thinking it’s okay to not be open when you say they are. Imagine driving 15 minutes to get somewhere and then they have already packed up all the food before they’re supposed to. Why do you think this is okay? If you’re only truly OPEN until like 8:50 then SAY that and make that your hours of operation! But I shouldn’t drive and rush thinking I can make it thinking I can get food at a certain time when I can’t. This occurred on July 2, 2025 evening. And then when I asked them if they were open the workers looked at me like I was crazy and one of them even walked to the back. No common decency, no “oh we are actually closed early because of whatever.” As someone who has spent a pretty penny here I am 100% thinking twice before coming back. I can’t even believe...
Read moreTourists in Portland, we headed down to Hawthorne on a Saturday night. We made a long lap up and down, checking out dining options and watching the somewhat "interesting" scene. Playing it safe, pulled out the phone to look for a place with strong reviews. I've eaten a lot of different foods over the years but can't remember ever having poke, so we thought we would give it a try. Peeking in the window I was tempted to go elsewhere. It was an order at the line setup and I was expecting table service. The recent trips to Chipotle/etc have been pretty disappointing. But hungry as we were, we gave it a try. And was very happy. A friendly crew member walked us through the many options. We ordered 2 bowls, ahi and snapper with a variety of sides. I was impressed how much flavor was in each item. Even the rice added to the bowl. This is the kind of food I could eat every week and would like to try to replicate at home. Hope you enjoy as...
Read moreThe Poke bowls are delicious. I do wish they had more variety, in side dishes and that they had options that rely a bit less on acidic ingredients. I'm always delighted about their poached eggs, which go great on salmon or steelhead, with masago to provide saltiness. It's awesome that they have both Brown rice and a salad base (as alternatives to their white rice) for their bowls, and that the salad features kale. Unexpectedly, they also sell bone broth! There is an odd pricing factor though. The bowl with 2 sides has a set price. They charge you another dollar for the poached egg, but then will only give you one side for the cost of the bowl. Me? I figure I'm paying the price for the bowl with 2 sides PLUS another buck for the egg. But, no, that's not how it works, and I go there less often now that I've learned this...
