Edited: On my second thought, I should also reviewed the food as everyone might want to know how their food's like. To me, the best comparison to this place is "Pok Pok" (which is permanently closed due to COVID situation.) The presentation is alike which looks great and both places have the atmosphere of a vintage restaurant in local suburban in Thailand. But the taste of the foods are far below than "Pok Pok" (Pok Pok foods' taste are authentic and I might go there often if the wait was not super long and not pricey). Actually, I can't think of any Thai food I ever had that not better than this place. I didn't have my dish because I already had lunch so I just taste everyone's dish a bite, which I feel lucky for that. Everything is very sweet and unflavored. All dishes we ordered were meant to be spicy (except noodle soup for kids) but they weren't at all. My most disappointed thing was the rice. In Thailand, we do have a "blue rice" as indication of fancy/premium rice (the rice will be cooked with the water boiled with Butterfly Pea flower so making the blue color to the rice with a touch of the flower scent.) But I think they just added food coloring to the rice to make it look different. I was very suspect if they even use Jasmine Rice. It was hard, no scent, and taste like old rice. The noodle soup was ok. May be it was the only good thing beside the nice decorations. Today I've tried one of the most famous Thai restaurant in Portland, according to media (and promotions, visitors, tourists reviews.)
Taste is individual's, mine might far from yours. And it is not a main discussion here.
We arrived a little before 2PM while they will close at 2:30. The host shouted back to the kitchen in Thai "Guys, we've got jinxed. We can't leave early as we planned". I can understand (don't mean it is right) that you speak Thai in front of foreigner assuming they don't know what you are talking. But, c'mon, we definitely looks Asian, if not Thai. You should at least mind your words.
One of my friend responded almost immediately, "We are Thai and know that you will close soon. My friend came from another state and want to try a recommended Thai Food she found on several social media reviews. We can order now and will get off very quick." -- Rule of thumb, you should respect your customer. Even they don't understand what you are saying, at least you shouldn't spill your attitude in front of them..
We were there as a group of 5 adults and 2 kids. We have to sit on separate tables because they allow up to 6 people in one table. They charged us 20% for gratuity because we have 7 people. 5 adult plus 2 kids (8 and 5 yo) which they did not allow us to sit together and also rejected us to split the bill to 2 tables.
Last but not least, we noticed $5 charge with details "COVID-19 fee". Raise your hand if you know any restaurant that charges you a fee for cleaning your table (before and after), check your temperature at walk-in, and buy mask for their own employee. We've been thru many restaurants during COVID, form counter service to fine dining, steak house, buffet, you name it. Some of them even provide masks for customers, give away gloves and/or face shield. This is a very FIRST TIME we were charge for COVID-19 fee.
As I mentioned, the taste is individual's preference. You might die for their foods, I respect that. But to me, this is not a place to what I call "restaurant". Cheap + Good food/service = Heaven Pricey + Good food/service = Good Cheap + Bad food/service = Ok Pricey + Bad food/service =...
Read moreCame here for our friend's 40th birthday, reservation was at 6pm on a Saturday. The QR code seemed to only work on Apple phones and not with Android phones. 2 people at our table had Apple phones and 3 had Samsung, we downloaded the menu several times, 6 times for me, and the screen went blank after the drinks menu. Informed our waitress and was told that it is still loading. She didn't give us an alternate options for traditional menu. We ordered the Lao Table Set and our waitress told us that the Tray is for a party of 2-3 people, and we had 5 adults and 3 kids so we had to order at least 2 trays. We told her we just wanted to try the tray and still order additional food plates, she hesitated and said it didn't work like that and she had to go ask a chef. She came out and said the trays were sold out. I ordered the Pink Cloud Drink and was told it was also sold out. (And believe or not, the drink was the first reason we picked Thai Farm house). We ordered the Fierry Ocean hotpot and immediately told it was also sold out as well.
Three popular items on the menu that was ordered by us first thing were all sold out. We have looked at other restaurant's menu before deciding to choose Thai Farm house and made a reservation 2 weeks before. We came because there menu was attracted to us and those were the items we wanted to try.
It's 6pm on a Saturday right at dinner time, not 8 or 9pm. I felt that with any other restaurants, customers would've been informed upon sitting and before ordering that "these special items are out today." instead of waiting for customers to order and one by one told each item was sold out. Even when the items are sold out, no alternative recommendations were given by the waitress, especially the drinks menu. Again it was our friend's 40th birthday, we were there to celebrate, she could've sold us a few drinks. All she said was "well I'll come back." because now we had to look at the menu to order something else.
Also, what if a customer has not been to Thai Farm House before or just in Portland for the weekend, it would've been nice for them to get recommendation from their server.
The Lao Food Party there was no asterisk anywhere on the menu that specified that it was only allowed for a table of 2-3 people and more than 3 people at the party then customers could not order. Since it wasn't specified then we felt that it should not have been a 'restriction' that we felt from our waitress. There are 3 asterisks on the lao Food Party picture but none was indication of limitation of number of people.
The food came out very fast, overall the services we received from the additional staff that came out was excellent. My friend who visited from 4 hours away and her 2 kids really enjoyed the other specialty food - the Crab Fried Rice, Crispy Duck Ka Pow, Tom Yum, Beef Salad, Crispy Calamari, etc..
So when we asked for bill, the server was given us a bill of another table.
So call before you come if the specialty foods and drinks are what you want to try.
I rarely write reviews but this time I had to . The last time I was at Thai Farm house was March of 2018. With the options of many other restaurants around Portland/Beaverton and Vancouver Washington, we don't think we will be back to TFH for...
Read moreIf your looking for delicious and adorable Thai restaurant do not got here! I honestly don't know why this place is so popular! The prices are ridiculous for the small portions they offer and the lack of ingredients in it. I went out with 4 people, we ordered the cheapest items on the menu and we spent over $100, we left hungry and unsatisfied. I ordered the yellow curry because it's the only curry on the menu. They charge you $15.95 for a base of coconut milk and some shallots and then charge you 2 extra dollars for some veggies that are always included in every Thai restaurant I've ever ordered from. There was an excessive amount of thin curry sauce compared to the veggies. The veggies were too hard and crunchy like they didn't cook them properly, one exception was the 5 pieces of diced potatoes in it which were soft. On top of that they charge you an extra $3 for a measley little portion of rice that wasn't nearly enough to soak up all that curry. I also ordered the $5 Thai iced tea and they really take the word "iced" to another level. All there was to that drink was ice, ice cubes and a huge ball of crushed ice on the top and a pretty straw. I think I got 4 sips of actual tea. Then at the finale they mix up our debit cards, I was clear in telling the waitress I was paying for most of the dinner, but they put the bigger portion on my friends card instead of mine. All in all I regretted the whole evening and really wished I would have made the decision to drive up to Vancouver to eat at my very favorite Thai restaurant Nom Nom! They are absolutely delicious, have bigger portions and better prices and we always leave satisfied and have left overs for lunch the next day. Edit... I put back 2 stars because they apparently use organic ingredients and the food...
