Let me start by saying - we really wanted to like this place and while the evening started out fine, it ended on a very sour note - thanks to the manager in charge.
Really trying to be balanced in our review, so here are the pros: -The hostess at the front area was very welcoming -The dining room is well appointed, airy and bright -The food was good, not exceptional but good -The cocktails were also good, again not exceptional but good -Wine selection was interesting - some varietals from Portugal that you don't see often on menu's in Portland -The spa area next door looked lovely and worth a second visit -Building is brand new -The meat dishes stood out the most
The cons: -Our server was very fake, the pleasantries seemed forced, given the theme is "Portuguese / Japanese" we had some questions and more often than not, she did not have answers; she had to double check a lot with the back of the house which delayed our service - which already was getting slow as the evening progressed -VERY expensive for the portions - $200-$250/person and some in our party left hungry! -One person in our party was trying to be helpful while our server was clearing the table, stacking dishes and placing napkins on dishes - one of the cloth napkins accidentally fell on the ground - it was interpreted as intentional - which it was NOT -One in our party approached the manager to comment on something else and the manager very sternly said that "our behavior toward the staff was aggressive and that we should watch that for the next time we visit"- he was totally off base, did not ask us to elaborate on what he heard, and was certainly not asking for a clarification but jumped to a conclusion. SUPER disappointing that what was intended to be a helpful action, was completely misrepresented.
Overall, this place is over rated, they need to focus on being more genuine and provide a better value overall - restaurants are hurting out there, keep it positive and appreciate those that are coming out to support your business and dropping serious coin on a Saturday night. We may be back to visit the spa, but doubt we will be...
Read moreOne of the best restaurants in Portland, OR. We went here with no expectations and we're open to an experience and wow did we have an amazing one. To start off, the staff was exceptionally welcoming at the front when seating us. Even having the manager in duty stopping by to offer sparkling or still water and to welcome us. We were warmly greeted by our server JB... who honestly made us feel like family by the end of the night. JB introduced us to the menu and asked if we had any allergies or dislikes, we advised no and said we are open to any and all recommendations... They were so willing to take us on a favor journey by thoughtfully choosing every dish tonight for us... We went through 7 courses together and checked in after each dish arrived open to thought and feedback as well as checking in on hunger levels. The way she had the dishes delivered truly was excellent as the flavors were introduced from more light and refreshing dishes to more comforting and heavier dishes. Finishing the night with 2 specific red wines choosen for each of us and the basque cheesecake was truly a perfect way to end an amazing evening. Seriously the menu JB created for us tonight was like a chef special menu you'd be impressed with time and time again. We would love to be back regularly and specifically ask for JB as our...
Read moreAfter a blissful soak at Cascada’s thermal springs, my husband and I took the night up a notch at Terra Mae. No res? No problem. We grabbed seats at the bar - so happy we did.
We actually followed Colby, the manager, here from his last restaurant, knowing we’d be in for something special. He did not disappoint. The hospitality was top-tier, and David, the head bartender, was so fun! He made us feel like old friends. We kicked things off with the Café de Arroz - an absolute dream. Smooth, rich, and unforgettable. Once we realized David personally curated the cocktail menu, we let him take the lead. He made us the Hanami Corpse Reviver and Agave Ginger Rajah - both chef’s kiss.
For food, we went all in on small plates so we could try more: • Black Olive Pâté with milk bread and butters - savory perfection. • Dumplings with linguica, leeks, and peri-peri chili crisp - best we’ve ever had. • Tonkatsu with black garlic kewpie - so good, my husband almost didn’t share. • Mentaiko Udon - creamy, garlicky, rich… left us speechless.
Finished strong with the Citrus Olive Oil Cake - light, not too sweet, and the perfect finale.
We can’t wait to come back, try something new, and catch up with our new friend David behind the bar. Terra Mae is a vibe, a feast, and an experience. If you’re in the area, do yourself a...
