Bread Box — Restaurant in Portsmouth

I'm generally not one to write reviews, but my experience with this place has been so stellar that I'm going to give them the recognition they deserve. Portsmouth has literally hundreds of great restaurants, but dollar for dollar I am yet to find a comparable take out place. The employees are polite enough, but that's not what really makes this place stand out. It's the food, which is simply phenomenal. I have had several menu options, including the chipotle chicken sandwich and southwest burger, and both were very big servings featuring some of the best sandwiches of their type I've had anywhere. Both were bursting with flavor and it was clear to me that they put a lot of effort and attention to detail in their food.

I used to go to Lexie's Joint all the time simply because of name recognition, but at the Bread Box you can better food, bigger portions, and better service for the same cost. It's a must for anyone in the downtown area looking for casual diner-style sit-down or take out. Perfect for business lunches too.

This all being said, I've never ordered delivery here, which seems to be where most of the negative reviews are coming from. So if you are going to the Bread Box, maybe stick to dine-in...

Today, I had ordered two subs (an italian and a chicken club) and a french fry for a co-worker and I to be delivered to our work. After an hour of waiting, I had called to check on the status of our order and was told that the driver should be there any minute. I know Bread Box get's busy during lunch time so I wasn't too upset it had been an hour. It wasn't until 30 min after that did the driver show up. Not only did it take an hour and a half to deliver two subs and a fry, but the fries container was half full and they were cold and my sub wasn't made correctly.

I immediately called about it, letting them know that I am NOT one to complain, especially having been in the industry. The woman I spoke with, while very monotone, was not unpleasant or rude. She let me know they would immediately send out a new sub, which is appreciated but there was not once an apology.

10 out of 10 would absolutely would go back. Their fries and onion rings are absolutely delicious & to die for.. 100% the best little pizza/sub joint in Portsmouth! Been staying in the area for almost 2 months..and been to about 10 different pizza joints.. this by far takes the number 1 spot. My son who is extremely picky at all of his fries and most of his "French bread pizza" my daughter devoured her chicken finger and fries she said "this is the best food I've ever had!!!!" (Guess she doesnt like my food as much as she say lmao) hubby got a chicken finger sub. And I had the steak and cheese with peppers and onions. And let me tell you what.. the sub bread is so soft and delicious...they pack the subs with meat.. best steak and cheese I've ever had!!! We will visit...
