I remember this diner growing up as a kid. It sat next to JJ Newbury's. I wasn't into burgers or hot dogs as a kid. Yes, weird kid! I would go past and watch the tires slowly deflate. A friend of mine wanted to eat there decades ago, the diner has been in business since 1912, and ordered a hot dog. He was treated rudely and got sick 🤢 from the food. Whenever I went by lately, the dinner looks great and is very busy. Curiosity led me to visit. I found a parking 🅿️ spot in front. I went in and the inside was neat and all the seating were stools. Friendly staff. I had a basic hamburger 🍔 with everything on it. Tasted good 😋. Prices are very reasonable. The two people behind the counter and I talked about the diner. The flat tires are still on! We also reminisced about Portsmouth. I found out the woman who works there is recovering from cancer, but, her insurance was cancelled. A go-fund me page has been set up. The woman cleaned the counter where people ate after they left. Outdoor dining available. Touchless payment option not working very well. Update: November 2025; I met the general manager. He was a very nice fellow, but I wonder if he is tired about hearing about how everyone remembers this business from years ago. I think he was surprised to hear about my account of the flat tires. I had a cheeseburger with everything on it and a hit spot! I recommend this diner!

Gilley’s Diner in Portsmouth, NH, is a hidden gem for anyone looking for classic diner food in a charming, nostalgic setting. My wife and I stopped by for a quick bite and were impressed by the experience. She ordered a hot dog with fries, and I opted for a double cheeseburger with fries. Both were served within 5 minutes, hot, fresh, and full of flavor. Despite the small menu, the food is top-notch for diner fare, and the friendly service adds to the experience. The diner itself is small and quaint, with only six seats, but the charm of this old food truck-turned-diner more than makes up for it. The service was fantastic—there's only one person running the place, and she handled everything seamlessly. If I lived in the area, I'd be here at least once a month. Highly recommend for anyone craving a quick, delicious meal in a cozy, old-school diner atmosphere.

Nice little historic diner in downtown Portsmouth. By little, I mean there’s 8 small stools inside. Don’t let the outside fool you though.. it looks like it’s spacious, but it’s all kitchen. (No bathroom) We stopped in here on the way back from Maine, for an afternoon bite to eat. The menu is basic old school tiny diner faire... burgers hots dogs and fries. They did have poutine though, which is what I ordered. It was my first time trying poutine. It was pretty good. We also ordered a burger and regular fries. The cook not only cooked the fries to order, but he CUT them to order, which was surprising and awesome! The fries were the star of the show.. super good! Check this cool little spot out if your in Portsmouth!

My family have been customers for 20 years and after our experience on Tuesday 5/3 we will no longer be coming back. We ordered $50 worth of food and payed with our card. Well we don’t tip on our card we always do cash when we get our food. Well the person working went off to this other customer in there going on about how she is sick and tired of people who order $50 dollars worth of food and don’t tip. How she isn’t working her whole shift because it’s not worth her time so she closing early. We are sitting right there. She just kept going on how she is sick of cheap people and the day shift people who come in and order nothing and don’t bother tipping more then change or a dollar and how sales are down. Well she is the reason sales are down. No one wants to be made to feel like garbage when eating at a restaurant/diner. I have tried to reach out to the owners before doing this review and no response. We left our tip when our food was ready granted it was half the normal amount we would normally tip because of her poor attitude. As we were leaving she said next time bring more money. When we went to eat our burgers were so dry and thin it was hard to chew. Never have we been treated like this here before and if they plan on keeping business they need to fix there customer service. Or shut...

If I could give this place a zero I would. I went in and ordered a burger it was the same Quality as a grade school frozen burger. It had a freezer burn aftertaste, the food quality was below average and not healthy at all. The woman working there was so rude and Angry, I went to order and she mumbled under her breath that locals and regulars come first and then loudly said to the local behind me that she hated when customers paid with cards because she works six hours and gets like three dollars in tips and customers should pay cash. Both women gave me the stink eye, She shamed me for paying with a card, she mumbled swears under her breath and was beyond disgusting 🙄. I went to my car and got two quarters went back in and gave her a tip alright, Maybe she should complain to her boss about customers playing with a card instead of shaming customers that pay with a card for mediocre average cafeteria style food 🤣 she was so sad and angry. I actually feel sorry for the old bird. Lord she had no class at all, If she was smart she would ask her boss to include a register that you can add a tip when paying with a card. Don’t yell at customers for a issue you have with your employer. She started screaming at a older lady because she pulled out a debit card as I left, it’s not just me she was...
