I tried to eat here last night with my family at around 7:00 pm. Everything started fine until my first encounter with our waitress. She came by asking what our table wanted for drinks. Everyone ordered water but I wanted a beer and asked if the establishment served beer. From my perspective she seemed annoyed at me asking but answered yes. As I fumble through my menu and grabbed the center little menu that sits in the middle of the table to see if they had a beer menu. The whole time she is just staring at me to order. I asked what beers they have since it wasn’t on the menu. Again she seemed annoyed at the question so I just said please come back while I figure it out.
At this time I’d expect the waitress to help me or maybe list off some of the beers available but no she just walk away. I end up finding the tap list on google but still indecisive when she came to drop off waters. She only brought waters for the rest of my party so as she walks away I asked if she can bring me water too while I think about my beer. Even only being 10 feet away and only two other tables she either didn’t hear me or ignored me.
She comes back a few minutes later to tend to a table close to us and after she finished I expected her to glance at our table to check on our status but didn’t, so I politely said “excuse me, can I have a water” as she was walking away into the kitchen. She did a full stop and pause before she turned around for me to confirm she heard me before she barely nods her head and goes back to her business.
Finally she comes with the water and I reach out my hand to revive it and she bypasses it and places it in the table ( I may be overreacting here, but after all that happened it seemed intentional) and I ask her what’s on the rotating taps. She glances at my phone which has the beer menu on the top half of my phone and the happy hour on the bottom half. She immediately says sharply happy hour is over. I again said I just want to know what’s on tap. Again she states they are not doing happy hour so I told her that I don’t care about happy hour I just want to know what beers they have available. She responds that I have the happy hour menu pulled up on my phone. I said understood but the top part is your beer selection and I want to know the rotating tap options. She finally gives it to me and walks off. By this time my family notices and suggests we go to another resultant which we did.
I give wait staff all the benefits of the doubt when it comes to subpar service. The restaurant being busy, kitchen slow, or could be a bad day for them. But I feel like no matter how I sugar coated how I talked and acted around her she didn’t want to give me the time of day. The fact there was only 3 tables including ours I cannot say they were busy.
Customer service isn’t the easiest job and there are a lot of bad customers, but I felt like I did not deserve this type of service with the little interaction we did have. We barely got our drink orders in and I felt like I was unwelcome or unwanted. Maybe she was being phased out but still no excuse to be rude. We ended up leaving before my beer arrived.
I gave a 3 star on food just because we didn’t get to try it and don’t want to make it seam they have bad food. Service was horrible. First time I left a restaurant for bad service.
I hope I can get myself to try it again and support a small business. I’ve heard good things about this place and hopefully it was a...

Read moreI have been patronizing Charlies for years and just have to say, by far the HOMETOWN FAVORITE to relax and enjoy food, drink, and hospitality. I know some will complain about this or that and or prices. I have been a Puyallup native for 39 plus years and when you compare other establishments from Sumner thru Puyallup and over to Canyon Road area, they all are very comparable and within same pricing ranges.
People are so fast to complain about prices and with Covid closures, inflation, fuel, food and more price increases all around, everyone has to pass some onto the customers. Its the nature of business and in order to stay open and to employ others as well.
January 1st fuel prices are rising .46 cents a gallon for gas and .53 cents a gallon for diesel. Your local places cant absorb these increases constantly without passing some down to us as well as the delivery trucks and businesses passing these down to the restaurants and cafes.
Your clothing and household will also be going up as well. Just please remember this before you complain about this or that price and show consideration to these small town family places that want to continue providing services for us all. Its not their fault. Start at the state level and consider who and what you vote for. That is where some of these taxes and surcharges start and are forced upon us all.
I will always support local family type businesses before I support corporations with CEOs and upper managements rolling in millions of income with no worries for themselves and families.
Charlies, keep up the great hospitality and service and relentless hours of running a business during these tough times. most of us respect you and your...
