We hadn't been to this location in about 4 months and the store has gone way downhill fast. It used to be one of our fav grocery stores in Quincy. Food quality/freshness is very questionable and prices have risen to Stop & Shop levels. Saw many foods that were about to expire or mold on the fruits. Some steak looked grey and would probably make someone sick. Refrigerated section was also poorly maintained with freezer frost all over some foods. Dairy section smelled of spoiled milk and cookie section near bathroom wreaked of human waste.
They put in a new "gate" to stop shrinkage at the fruits and vegetable area and we saw someone just grabbing items and going through the gate anyways to leave store and not pay. Alarm goes off and no one comes to check. This happened a couple of times while we were there.
To top this off, we accidentally lined up in the express lane on check out. Signage was not clear and we saw one guy with 8 bags of groceries ahead of us. Then, the people in front of us had more than 12 items too... but the cashier screams at us .. "sorry this is express only, go to lane 5" Why did she single us out? Only thing I could think of was we were the only non-whites in line... racism?
I hear this store is getting demolished in favor of more luxury condos. This can't happen soon enough. Someone from the city inspector's office should come down and take a look close look...
Read moreI ordinarily wouldn't review a supermarket. I mean c'mon what's really special about chain supermarkets right? They're after all typically carbon copies of one another. But this particular Star Market (sister store and owned by Shaws) has been around forever and a day. I really like this place for it's wide aisles, it's pretty good selection overall, and it has an excellent produce section. But the back of the house where the deli and meat sections are is special. It has a great staff and the prepared meals, hot foods, and sandwiches are always beautifully displayed. There's pride put into that area and it shows. Now let's go up front to pay for our goodies and discover just how busy this place can be! Doesn't seem that way with all the elbow room around the store but this is the bottle neck. You'd expect this is where the typical supermarket aggravation begins. But that's not been my experience. They staff the front end well and the staff has always been really friendly and courteous to me. The only thing I don't like is the parking lot which is often filled with discourteous drivers. But there are also other businesses there and you can't blame bad drivers on a business anyway. Go there on off hours and enjoy...
Read moreI like Star Market, better and cheaper store brand items(Signature). My problem is with their cashier though. I usually do large groceries alone, for like a week supplies. And the thing with Star market, the manned cashiers are usually like 2-3 lanes only, and most of the times, they don't have baggers, just cashier. And I had a few experience in there before that the cashier won't help you bag stuff, especially if you have a re-useable bags, so I was so stressed out of unloading stuff from my cart onto the conveyor belt, while rushing to bag them at the end of the lane where my stuff are piling up, while at the same time, trying to pay for my stuff. I actually like to do self-checkout, less stressful for me, but recently they have a 15 items or less policy in those self checkout. And the other day, an old female employee, not sure if she's the manager, yelled out and embarrassed me in front of the other customers for using the self checkout. I was like, is that really necessary? I never experienced that in my old Star market (just moved to Quincy few months ago). They should just convert those empty cashier lanes to self checkout for 15 or more items. Now, I am not sure if I still want to shop there or maybe go to...
