Monchy's Colombian Grill (Rahway) — Restaurant in Rahway

I went there during a break in my practice, and didn’t have much time to get food. This place was recommended by a friend, so I decided to go. Important to note that the place was very empty at the time I ordered. I ordered two of the chicken sandwiches, and I was told that it would take about ten minutes to make them. That was fine with me. However, 15 minutes had passed and I had only seen the employee once. I feel it’s important to mention I have bad social anxiety, and I was very anxious because I was late to my practice at this point. The woman came out about two minutes later and had me pay, and I asked again if she could please try and make it as fast as possible because I was already so late. Please correct me if I’m wrong to try and rush her if she was already out of the timeline she provided. I was starting to have a panic attack because of the situation and had to call a friend. My friend tried telling me to tell the woman that I was going to have to come back later, but I couldn’t even do that because there was no one in the front space for the majority of the time I was there. She cant back two minutes later and I told her that I was going to have to come back later if it wasn’t ready. I ended up going back to my rehearsal and crying because I felt like such an idiot over the situation because the woman seemed to not be empathetic to the fact that she was causing me to be behind schedule, and didn’t seem to have any urgency to fulfill my order. As a teen who works in the service industry I ALWAYS try and stay on time because that and keeping the customer happy are the two most important things about my job. The situation did resolve when one of my friends kindly offered to pick the food up for me while I was onstage for a scene....

The atmosphere of this place is okay! I can see the draw, especially as the warmer weather starts to come in.

But as most have mentioned! The service here is NOT good. They are lacking a certain something. I'll touch on this towards the end, on what I feel it could be.

The Food...It.Is.Not.Good!!! You might get lucky on a dish you order from here every so often. But overall the food is also missing a certain something.

Back on what I think is missing with the service which is also directly connected to the food being subpar. First off all, to say this is "Colombian food", is like saying Taco Bell is Mexican food. Sorry, but what they are serving at that place is not Colombian food. This is coming from a person born in Colombia and has been there many many years. Heck, there are even better other local Colombian restaurants here for that are better. There has been a surge of Colombian restaurants/bakeries opening up around here in the Union County area. They seem to be people who have no old school authentic type cooking skills. Instead they are putting extra effort into making it trendy. Give me an old school type restaurant with good food before generic and obvious decor and what I can imagine, are young-ins in the kitchen, slapping plates together and calling it a Bandeja Paisa. This sentiment pours into the service part as well. People with no hosting experience, that have this odd ability to hover on the line of being very nice, but also have a slight rudeness to them as well (I don't even think they know it). This restaurant opened in October and I have been dying to try it. My friend was taking me here for another birthday celebration so was looking forward to it. When I arrived I didn't realize they had a private parking lot so I parked on the street nearby. I made reservations over the phone and was misinformed on the brunch time so we were not able to partake in the brunch but we could eat off the regular menu.

We were served by Stephanie and she was pretty good. For drinks my friend ordered a pineapple drink and I ordered the margarita patron. My drink was really good and my friend enjoyed his. For lunch I ordered the skirt steak topped with carmalized onion and rice and beans. My friend ordered the tostones topped with a sauce and steak and shrimp. He said he liked it but the sauce was too much after while. I enjoyed my meal especially the carmalized onion.

I tried to be slick and get shots for me and the bartender on the house, but guess again, they charged us lol. The bill was about $104 with a 18% gratuity included. All in all I had a pretty good experience. I will return to...
