ALLERGY PARENTS BE WARNED My family and I were very happy to see that they had a “non-dairy” chocolate ice cream. After speaking to the staff about how it was made, what touched it, confirming that was dairy free and that he wasn’t allergic to the almond milk used to make it we had them use a clean scooper and gave some to our 2 year old son who happily enjoyed it.
Within 30 mins he began having an allergic reaction which lead to an anaphylactic reaction, the use of his Epi pen for the first time in two years and his hospitalization that evening. It was the scariest and most expensive scoop of ice cream in our lives!
In order to get to the bottom what happened we requested an ingredients list that clearly states it contains sodium caseinate (a derivative of milk)! You didn’t even have to know what the words meant because it clearly stated the word MILK! In an effort to help others avoid a repeat situation I spoke with the owner about the need to educate their staff on the product they are actually selling and instead of the concern for future customers or my son he focused on educating me on the fact that non dairy can contain milk and dairy free can not.
The lives are our children are to important to hide behind the idea that one word that by definition means the same thing is somehow in the eyes of the fda different.
We ourselves will be making changes to insure our sons safety and no longer be trusting the word of strangers without seeing an ingredients list. However due to the responses we received from the establishment we will not be coming back and suggest anyone with concern for their families life due to any allergies I would highly recommend rethinking your visit.
Edit: I would like to add that since writing this review the company has reached out to me again and now expresses their concern for my child’s safety and the safety of others. I do believe they are sincere but I did not see this same attitude in my previous correspondence which is why i left it out. I won’t be able to follow up to see if they have implemented any changes to updating their staff with the education on their products actually containing milk even though labeled non dairy but I wanted to stated they have reached out to say they will...
Read moreA Comprehensive Review of my Experience at the Fresh Raleigh Location: —————————————— I walked up to the counter, my mouth watering with a hunger that could be sated only with the succulent and vivid flavors of the Fresh Raleigh Locations local ice cream. I felt the saliva pool in my mouth as I labored over my decision, reading from one flavor, to the next, to the next. I started 3 places back in line but I was so deeply possessed by the flavor options that I didn’t notice I was first in line until a steady, strong, young voice asked me; “can I help you sir?” The assuring tone yet firmness of the voice shook me out of my trance. I looked up, slightly flustered, and was immediately captured by the unwavering eye contact of a strong young man at the counter. I was captivated in the focus of his gaze for several seconds before I tore my eyes away from his and pretended to study the flavors, my heart racing. “May I help you?” He inquired once more, making me start with excitement. “Y-yes, I’d like a scoop of strawberry in a cup p-please.” I managed to get out, cursing myself for my awkwardness. He wrote it down, a small smile playing around the edges of his mouth. “Meet me at the next window for your order.” He said, gliding away, his hips swinging to and fro. I tried to prepare some sort of speech before I saw him at the next window, but he savagely scooped out a heap of strawberry before I could get my thoughts together. “Order for Simon” he said, leaning gently against the window, hand outstretched with my order. Hands trembling, I gingerly took the cup from him, heart racing, and turned away, too cowardly to say anything. “Simon” he called. I turned cautiously around. “Don’t forget your spoon.” He said, the small smile playing about his lips as he spoke. I grabbed the spoon got out “thankyousomuch” and practically ran back to my car. It was only when I was driving home that I realized I had never given the strong confident waiter my name. I’ve been thinking about him ever since... ——————————————————————————— 10/10 ice cream’s...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I have be dying to try this place since we moved to this area in Raleigh in October 2012. We went for the first time last week with our pups. As we stood in line debating what we were going or order, we saw they had doggie cups. The couple behind us overheard us talking about how we were going to order two of the doggy cups and they commented to us that they got the dog cup for their dog the last time they came and it made their dog sick. I assumed their dog just wasn't used to people food (ours eat people food daily) and we ordered two cups. I asked the lady (who wasn't pleasant) at the order station would it be cheaper to order two small cups of vanilla vs. the doggy cups, which consists of vanilla ice cream with two milk bones... and she said no--- so you're telling me two small cups of vanilla ice-cream (just ice-cream) is more expensive then two doggy cups (small vanilla, but with two dog bones)? that's fine, ill take it. We ordered Strawberry, chocolate with coconut, vanilla and rocky road ice-cream... chocolate, vanilla and rocky road were good, strawberry didn't have and trace of real strawberries. The person who prepared my chocolate was super skimpy on the coconut so I requested a small cup with more and she clearly didn't like this as she hummed and huffed away and still barely added any coconut to the cup.
With that being said, our dogs LOVED the doggy cups--- unfortunately for them, after being home for about an hour they threw the ice-cream up. Mind you, our dogs eat EVERYTHING and never throw up. Even as far as eating the armpits out of my boyfriends sweaty shirt-- gross, I know.
I don't mind paying top dollar to support a local business, but between the just 'good' ice-cream, pouty service and doggy cups, it wasn't the best experience. We'll give it one more try, but may stick to...
