We loved everything about Margaux's. We walked in and were immediately greeted by a nice, friendly, and pretty hostess who sat us right away. Within a minute, our server greeted us , brought us bread, and took our drink orders.
I ordered a single Bourbon on the rocks and was handed the best, most generous pour in a nice glass over a splash of water and a XL cube of ice. Perfect. They poured my wife a glass of wine like a professional would and then took our appetizer order.
Our server waited to see us put our menus down before asking what we wanted for our entrées and shortly after taking our main order, our appetizer was served. When we fully finished, our plates were taken at the perfect time and a minute or two later, our entrées were served and drinks refilled. You could tell that our server was looking and paying attention to us and they came over to tend to our table exactly when we needed them and not once did they walk up when we didn't. They didn't pull the annoying "how's your food" right after seeing you take a bite. The staff and at least our waiter seemed to have perfect professional behavior and used excellent judgment to assess their customers needs and this perfect type of waiting experience is rare. We're easy to get along with but it's just nice to experience a truly great wait staff. Nothing compliments great food and atmosphere like a perfect waiter giving their best and actually trying to make your experience a good one.
The food, environment, sounds of other happy guests, and generally lively high end vibe of this restaurant was very pleasant. We will absolutely be back and it's safe to say that we've found our new favorite place for date night when visiting North Raleigh.
Hats off to the owner, management, and the excellent staffing decisions made here. Great team, great food, fair prices, and an excellent wrapping of all these good qualities. Totally happy and wouldn't change a thing. I'm confident Margaux's will be around for...
Read moreFirst time visiting, we are from the triangle, living in Apex and have always heard the food quality was very good here. The website describes it as "fine dining" with a subjective dress code, we were looking forward to an enjoyable night out. Didn't happen.
We made a reservation, drove the 40 minutes trip. We requested a low top table with chairs, and when we arrived they had sent us a notification that a table was ready. We go in, down the stairs and they sit us near the kitchen at a small two-top at the coldest spot in the restaurant with a strong draft from the air overhead blowing hard enough to move the menus around on the table. I asked the waitress if there was somewhere else she could move us, at which time she proceeded to woman-splain in a very condescending tone that they couldn't change the air temp because of the open kitchen and that it is always freezing in their. I asked again if we could move to another area, she moved us one table away from the fireplace wall to the second coldest table in the restaurant.
We thought we'd give it a go. My wife asks for half sweet tea; they don't have it. Asked for Coke; they don't have it. "We don't have a fountain machine, just mixers", of which my wife was clueless. We don't visit bars so I had to explain to her that it is the soda gun. The waitress sniveled "We have Pepsi". Dr Pepper? "No, I said Pepsi from the mixer". My wife conceded with Pepsi and we started reviewing the inviting array of food on the menu; by the time the waitress returned I was back freezing, so we called another restaurant to check availability, then the waitress and hostess offer to move us up to a booth (bad knee, can't do a booth).
We decided to leave, spoke with the manager on the way out expressing or sincere disappointment that we won't be returning, they may have been good at some point in the past but that ship has long sailed. The noise level wasn't quite at a sports bar, but it was LOUD for...
Read moreI wanted to like this restaurant so bad. The decor is cool, and the people are really nice. The service was good. Our glasses were never empty.
We went to celebrate my dad’s birthday. We got calamari, french onion soup, a pork belly soup, a salmon entree and two steak entrees, a side of mashed potatoes, and two desserts.
The appetizer and soups were delicious. The pork belly soup was not what I expected, and I was pleasantly surprised by it. The salmon with corn pasta was really light and delicate.
We ran into problems with the steaks, though. Both steak entrees were $50. And for that price, I expect to get a high quality cut of meat. Both steaks were so full of suet/fat that they were essentially inedible. They were also terribly undercooked. I think at least some of that fat would have rendered if they had cooked it to the correct temperature. I have never been served a worse cut of meat in my life. I didn’t take a single bite that didn’t have a significant amount of fat in it. The broccoli rabe that was also on the plate was so disgusting I nearly vomited at the table. It was bitter, tough, and just gross.
It was my dad’s birthday dinner. I didn’t want to make a fuss about it. I tried so hard to enjoy my meal. I should have sent my dinner back. But considering both steaks were full of fat, I am sure we wouldn’t have gotten quality pieces of meat even if I had done that.
The desserts were fine. I was honestly just so put off by my entree that I couldn’t really enjoy dessert even though it was good.
This restaurant had so much going for it. And after the first two courses I was really looking forward to the rest. And the contrast was so incredibly stark.
We’ll never go back. But if you go, definitely don’t...
