Sometimes a good Italian sub is what I am craving and that is what brought me to Gonella’s for lunch last Saturday. The store is easy to find just off Telegraph in Redford and parking seemed to be sufficient. I got an 8 layer Italian on the hard(outside) roll as well as 6 pepper poppers and a towne club soda. My bill was just under $20. The sub was exactly what I expected and was seeking. Stacked meats, plentiful veggies with a good dressing on a nice roll. The poppers were absolutely delicious as well. Pricey, but delicious. I think they probably work out to about $1.20/each and they are a la carte so get one or ten(I would lean towards the latter and green ones - but both are fuego) I will definitely be back and may stray to try and create your own sandwich and try the soft bread next time as it may soak up the dressing better - although this would require a prompt consumption and not great to go. Anyways check out Gonella’s if you want a classic Italian sub. Also, they are not just a sub shop and offer all sorts of cold deli selections(meat/cheese/salads) and a small assortment of Italian grocery items. Great selection of craft and local sodas.

I've been visiting Gonella's since I was a little kid; and it is by far my most favorite version of an Italian sandwich. The soft roll is the way to go! Best part is they're delivered fresh from right down the street, so you're always guaranteed to have a fresh, soft, roll. I love how you can select how many layers you'd like on your sandwich. While most places who serve this style of sandwich do this, Gonella's was my first encounter and they do it best. My go-to is a 12 layer on soft roll with extra dressing on the side. I seriously wish they could bottle and sell this dressing. It's the best mix of oil and red wine vinegar. I SOAK the entire sandwich in it, it's that good. Their canolli's are amazing as well as the various other deli sides they offer (potato salad, pasta salad, etc). With good prices and consistent lines, it's worth the wait.

While there are two locations I'm aware of (Redford and Southwest) I always end up at the Redford location. I've been a long time if sporadic customer myself for years now and I always recommend this place for cold cuts. Sandwiches are fairly priced and always worth the money, there's a wide variety of drinks and snacks available to purchase, and out of the dozens of people I've introduced to this place, there hasn't been a single complaint outside of not being able to save half their sandwiches for later as intended because it's too delicious. There's also plenty of other food options I'd highly recommend, like their Shooters (red or green). The staff & owner are always very friendly and polite. They do take call in orders for faster service as well.

This place has the BEST subs EVER. We have been eating these subs since we were little kids. My mom used to drive about 1-2 times a week to Delray, MI to get us these subs. When we moved to the west side we used to go to the one in Dearborn Heights. When I moved, it had been a long time since i had one of these subs. So one day i had a taste for one of these subs so me and my daughter decided to drive to Dearborn Heights for a sub. Low and behold to my surprise they were not there any more. So we sat in the parking lot and I googled them. I was determined to find them and I didn't care how far I had to drive to find them. To my surprise Google had them located in Redford, just about 15-20 minutes from where they originally located. When we got to the new store, I was skeptical, UNTIL I saw the owner from the previous location come from the back. Then and there I knew I had the right Gonella's. Today was the second time me and my daughter was at the new location. I've had other subs but nothing compares to their subs. If you haven't had one of their subs, I highly recommend that you get one and I GUARANTEE that you will not eat...

The elder gentleman at the register is a sweetheart, as is the middle-aged man who works behind the deli counter. The young girls behind the deli counter? WHEW! They're some of the nastiest, most unprofessional and generally unpleasant individuals I've ever met in my life. They test your patience and that's all I'll say about that.

The sandwiches aren't that good. This shop uses what I call bubble meat -- deli meat that's so processed that it doesn't resemble the meat it is in any way. I can't deal with that texture at all, so this place is a big no for me.

Prices are fair. I got a turkey sub with American and pepper jack cheeses; it had a lot of meat (which only made me gag even more because I don't like that "bubble meat); the sandwich was $8.35.

Other reviews that allude to the cleanliness of the sandwich station, are somewhat accurate. It was covered in lettuce. That didn't really bother me though because it was otherwise clean, it was lunch and they were busy AND the surface is only used for sandwiches from what I can tell.

I do love the bread they use. If you're not particular about lunch meat, then you'll love...
