I think I may have just found my new favorite coffee shop in Richmond!
First off, compared to other coffee spots in the area, this place is so affordable. For a French muffin with sausage and egg, a bagel with sausage, and two drinks, we spent just $20! At a lot of other cafes, breakfast and drinks for two can easily run close to $40, so this was such a pleasant surprise.
The shop itself is absolutely adorable. Warm, welcoming, and with plenty of seating both inside and out. The menu is simple and to the point, and I mean that as a huge compliment. You can tell every single item was chosen with care and made with quality in mind.
Now, the food… oh my goodness. The bagels are to die for, I don’t know if they’ve sprinkled magic into the everything bagels or what, but they were incredible. My husband had the French muffin and couldn’t stop raving about it. My matcha latte was perfect, and my coffee-snob husband said the coffee was excellent too.
And the outdoor seating area? Just such a vibe. Relaxing, charming, and the perfect spot to sip your drink and enjoy the day.
If you’re in Richmond, you absolutely have to stop by Black Hand Coffee. It’s the perfect combination of great prices, delicious food, excellent drinks, and a cozy, friendly atmosphere. I can’t...
Read moreMay have just gotten a bad grind. Purchased the Sumatra coffee. Using a Rancilio grinder set at 30, the beans seemed to fracture, rather than grind to a sandy powdery grind. My wife described the taste as weird. I made the next batch twice as strong to bring out flavor; a little better, but not good. The flavor was similar to the way the bag smelled. I think the beans may have been over roasted and absorbed the bag flavor. The staff was very friendly and helpful (thus 3 stars). Think I just got a bad roast.
Just want to update this post. The Black Hand Coffee Co is a 5+ star outfit who are genuinely concerned with their taking care of their customers. Emailing Graham Glass, he corrected the problem by fixing me up with a freshly roasted batch. He did so, although he did not see the bag I purchased. He gave me a recommendation based on what I wanted in a roast. You couldn't ask for better customer service. By the way, I really didn't know what I wanted. I'm very new in purchasing beans and didn't know which roast to go for. Graham, thanks for your help, recommendation and consideration. UDATE: Just want to say the MD6 blend Graham recommended is very good and I highly recommend it. Coffee doesn't get any better...
Read moreI agree with some of the reviews on here that say that the Black Hand has gone downhill. However, it has nothing to do with the employees or the quality of their products and drinks. The place has a hostile environment. The crowd that frequents the Black Hand has changed, and not for the better. It seems like they have begun to attract the most small-minded, reactionary people in the metro. This morning, someone left a napkin on my table with a homophobic message on it. (I'm openly gay.) I live in the Museum District and have been going here for several years and never had this happen. I showed it to the barista and she was very apologetic. However, this incident does say something about the crowd the cafe attracts, which says something about the cafe itself. This isn't the first time I've experienced homophobia around the Black Hand. About three weeks ago, a patron who was coming out the restaurant as was going in slurred at me for wearing a Pride t-shirt. I would caution my friends in the gay community that the current atmosphere here isn’t LGBT friendly. It’s sad because they have...
