The food was amazing, but unfortunately the customer service was not up to the same level. My husband and I arrived at about 2pm on a Thursday and no one was in the front area to greet us. We heard lots of chatter and action coming from the kitchen so after waiting a few minutes for someone to come out, my husband went to the kitchen doorway and made our presence known by saying, "Hello?" A young woman came out and i think she asked what we needed, so I asked something to the effect of if they were still open because even though their hours were until 3, it seemed like they already closed up and just forgot to lock the front door or something. She responded to my question with a bit of hesitation and said how the kitchen has already started some of their closing tasks but that if they were mad than that's their fault for starting to close up early, and then said it was up to us what we wanted to do. I was a little taken aback by her response, and it felt a little like she didn't want us to dine there because we'd be getting in the way of everyone finishing their closing tasks, so I told her that we'd still like to have lunch there because it was still before closing time and we came to have lunch. We had seen this place on DDD and were really looking forward to eating here, and we live a few hours away so it's not like we could come back any time! We picked out a table to eat at and when placing our order, I asked for the Big Poppy but asked if I could get mayo instead of the poppyseed honey mustard. the waitress said that while they do have mayo in the fridge, they cant actually give it to customers because its really for their sister property's recipes. Honestly, a simple, "Unfortunately we can't do that." would have sufficed. Once we got our food, it was very good and tasted fresh which was great. Our waitress, though, came to sit out nearby on the bar stools saying she doesn't normally do this but that she thought we were a "cool table" so she felt comfortable enough with us to sit there. Soon, another woman and a man who both worked for the restaurant joined her at the bar counter area, and while most of their conversations were okay, there was a part where the man (who was working on a laptop, so i assume he had to be some kind of manager or supervisor at least) made a comment that the James River had "feces in it"...super appetizing to hear during a meal!
All in all, i really cant recommend coming here because while the food was great, the customer service was really really lacking. We left feeling unwelcome and like we were more of a nuisance than anything so I highly doubt we'll be making a trip back and will likely be telling others who travel to this area to skip...
Read moreWhat a treasure! Everytime I picked up a cake at Shindigz, I would say to myself, "I need to try the Fancy Biscuit". Shame on me for not checking out this incredibly charming spot sooner.
I had a casual business meeting there today, and I promise that the Fancy Biscuit is going to be my new "go-to" spot from now on. There is parking out back so no driving around looking for on-street parking. The tables are set far enough apart so we could actually hear each other. The service was attentive without being annoying. And the food - oh the food!
I started off with a cappuccino. It came in a nice size mug and honestly, I could've made that my dessert. It was perfectly balanced - just the right amount of foam and a nice freshly brewed taste. I couldn't narrow down the menu, so I went with the deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese. Let me tell you, this was the holy trinity of comfort food. The deviled eggs were beautifully presented and the yolks were a Southerner's dream - mayonnaise, a little sweet, with a smokey finish. My family knows that I order pimento cheese (and/or) fried green tomatoes whenever I get a chance. These were probably the best I've ever had - hands down. The pimento cheese was the right consistency (not too dry and not too greasy). Each wonderful little dollop of cheese was crowned by a sweet and salty beautifully fried green tomato. I told my guest that my family used to make these with salt on one side and sugar on the other. This rendition took it to the next level. I may never make my own again! My guest had been here before, but she had never tried the Got Your Goat biscuit before. It was a beautifully presented very hearty lunch, and she quickly polished it off.
I can't believe I haven't heard more about this charming delicious spot near downtown. I can't wait to return...
Read moreNo one greeted us when we first came in or indicated there was a dine in option upstairs. We waited in the line right inside the door for quite some time, and were then asked for our takeout order. Menus were available only at the register, not posted anywhere or available at the back of the line, so we had to decide quickly once we got to the front. We only found out after ordering that we could have dined in. While waiting for your takeout orders, there are some benches/booths available, but there are not enough for a Saturday morning crowd. There were several other benches covered in boxes and other supplies that could have been used for seating (doesn't seem to be a COVID spacing thing as they didn't alternate-- all the empty benches were in a block near the door, and the ones covered in boxes were in a block further back). It's a very small space with a lot of people standing awkwardly, so I'm not sure why they don't free up that seating. Once you have your food, you can go outdoors to eat in a tent, but most of the tables and chairs in the tent were wet. Biscuits are dry and crumbly--I asked for butter with mine but it was not included, and by the time I realized, we'd already gone outside. My friends enjoyed their biscuits and gravy, but I have had way better biscuits in RVA. Unfortunately, this place is too much like Shyndigz next door--weird, awkward, ordering experience and food that can be...
