Incompetence at its highest form. If I could leave a zero star review I would. I am in Modesto for the first time visiting my girlfriends family from Vegas. When we arrived, we were promptly seated in the bar for trivia night. I can at least say that the High School girl seating us was polite. I am in town with a expired drivers license and associated temporary paper license. This is the standard practice in all 50 states, including California. Expired real card, temporary paper ID. Both, together, form a legal, valid ID. Signed, stamped and dated by the state of Nevada. Living in Vegas we have some of the strictest ID regulations in the country. In the three days that I had this combination, I gambled at almost every casino on the strip, went to half a dozen bars, and ordered drinks at another dozen locations throughout California, Nevada, and Utah. Some servers needed to confirm with their manager, but all accepted it as a legal form of identification, as they're supposed to. I'm 27 years old.
We sat down at a bar table where we were promptly ignored for about five minutes. As our server finally came to us, he asked us what we'd like to drink. He appeared to be a recovering addict or a current addict, based on the deterioration of his teeth and skin. As my identification often requires a little extra detail, I pulled it out before I ordered my drink. Before any of us could order our drink, he looked at my IDs and mumbled something to the effect of "I need to... I have to..." And walked off with my IDs before we could order our drinks. He returned sweating and aggressive, stating that they could not accept my IDs, quoting a line on the temporary ID that states that it alone is not verifiable identification. When I pointed out that with an expired drivers license the two pieces of identification were legal, he mumbled some more and apologized. I immediately asked to see a manager.
A big, sweaty, and yet again extremely aggressive Hispanic manager came over. I pointed out that the two forms of identification were valid together, and that the dozens of establishments I've been to have had absolutely no problem with it. I must question this manager and servers competence as this is a common occurrence. How has he not seen this before? He stated something about restaurant policy, he couldn't accept it. There is no possible way that this is in violation of restaurant policy. Both the server and manager require immediate retraining.
He's the type that is in a position of power for the first time, managing his High Schoolers and High School dropouts. Condescending, aggressive, but most importantly, completely incompetent. He may be able to talk to his employees in that manner, but it's inexcusable that he treat a customer that way, particularly when he's incorrect about the law and incorrect about the company policy. Had it not been an hour from closing, I would have called the Modesto police. We immediately went to Wing Stop next door where I was of course, immediately served alcoholic drinks after showing my identification. They were happy to accept our $90 tab.
I don't expect much from Applebee's, but I certainly expect a manager to know his companies policies and the law regarding forms of identification. Our friends and us will not be returning to this location, or any other Applebee's...

Keep your skin cells and sweat off the ( hopefully but doubtfully) cleaned table he didn't do it once or twice he did iit many. Then I was trying to unwrap my silverware from that little paper thing that goes around it (obviously not tomest with since it was cheese sticks the food but cuz I need to get the spoom for coffee...btw it never arrived)anyway He actually reached out and started to grab my silverware to Open it for me..when I pulled back I said please don't touch my silverware. Boy he looked angry and offended . I'm 51 years old and perfectly capable of opening my own silverware even if I can't tell the difference between a napkin and a paper thing lol it wasn't like he was helping a child or somebody that was maybe a little slower. he reached for and he touched the side of the fork that would go in my mouth. If that wasn't enough He also carried the glasses to the table holding them by the rims....where your mouth goes?!? if you've ever been a waitress you know you hold the side of the glass you never put your hands on the top of the glass That's where your mouth goes yuck none of us liked our food but sadly that night It was the only place open after a concert on our way home back to Riverbank. nasty food.
