Enjoying the Best Mexican Meal in a Historic American Building

If you are looking for ambiance, this is definitely a place to go for it. A Spanish style patio filled with lush, tropical greenery adorned the outskirts of the restaurant, blocking your view of the outside world and keeping you captivated in a relaxing atmosphere. It was quite hot out that day, however, there were mister which kept a slight spray, keeping you quite cozy and comfortable. This was one of my best dinners I have had in a long time. The hostess wasn't super enthusiastic, welcoming, nor had any smile on her face, extremely bland and transactional in her approach to seat me. The server, on the other hand, was completely opposite. She was extremely kind and engaging, had a huge smile, and kept an eye on me all night to make sure I was tended to. She made me feel extremely warm, welcomed, and cared for. I started my meal off with the watermelon gazpacho. It was absolutely perfect for a hot summer evening. It was so refreshing with a great balance of sweet, savory, and spiciness. The cool, creamy avocado added a little bit of richness to balance the lightness of the soup. For my meal, I had 2 carnitas tacos and a side of calabacitas. I get a little leery when I go to an upscale Mexican food restaurant, as I tend to leavr disappointed with sub par, non authentic food that I can often find in a small family owned, hole in the wall place. I was totally surprised. The tacos were absolutely amazing. The meat was shredded, tender pork that was trimmed and lean with no fat. The flavors were so mouth-watering, with again, a perfect balance of sweet, savory, and spice. It was so juicy that it dripped on your plate with every bite. The calabacitas had a great mixture of summer squash, tomato, carrots, and cheese. The squash wasn't overcooked and mushy but served just right.

Had to wait a long time with no one coming up to entry even though a reservation. Had to eventually just walk in since no service people would come be hostess. Food service is very spotty and extremely slow and difficult to get attention of staff. The food was cold. Enchiladas cold. So what are they doing? Reheating?! Microwaving? But all that said and done, I do love the atmosphere and beauty of the space. Unfortunately, there are no efforts to cool the space. No fans. No misters. This is extreme summer heat and no efforts to cool the space. Water glasses extensions tiny, like a small juice size and honestly the glassware quite cheap and thin clear glass for such a supposed posh place. Eating outdoors in this heat for lunch so unconfirmed in jeans a tank and birkenstock that got heat exhation and absolutely no one helped or noticed of my iffy walk to cool off in lobby where I remained for an hour barely making it to a chair. Again. No staff. No one at the door or in the lobby who came to help. An older lady sat with me until I cashed my husband an hour later for didn't think I could make it outside to retrieve my car. Again, no staff helping or inquiring or bringing cold rags or ice water that they so miserly provided one tiny glass at lunch. So, no, I do not recommend it even though I have been faithfully going here for 30 years. The Mission Inn staff is lacking in the level of service I would expect at a nice place like this and absolutely unacceptable that they not have fans and misters in an outdoor restaurant in extreme heatwave heat of the desert of Southern California.

I made the mistake of making my reservation here instead of somewhere else because I did not know better. Our reservation was at 6:30 and after 30 min . I finally approached the hostess again and she seemed like she had almost forgot about us and said “oh I will see you right now” We sat in a beautiful location. we were given chips and salsa and some water by a bus boy. Our waitress was a Young girl with glasses and not much personality. As we were ordering, we could tell that she clearly did not really know the menu so she was asking us questions about our order that didn’t really have to do with what we ordered, but whatever. I would say another 30 minutes went by and we never got our drinks. We were really looking forward to sitting there having some chips and salsa and our drinks while we waited for our food, but the drinks never came. Our food finally came and we did manage to get two of our drinks After she tried to set them down on another table and realized that she was giving him to the wrong people and eventually found us…, but of course one of them was wrong. We debated whether we should try to fix it or not because we could tell that she just did not know how to be a server. But we Had another waiter come by And we ask him if he could swap out the drink because it was incorrect, but unfortunately, he brought it over to her and handed it to her and asked her to do it and we never saw that drink again. So basically, we just didn’t get to have that. We watched this Waitress go table to table, seeming to have issues with every single table. She was giving food to the wrong people, she was giving drinks to the wrong people, she was giving the wrong bill to the wrong table, She couldn’t remember what you had ordered, She never would come by and ask if you’re OK, Everyone in the restaurant, including us, had to start getting up and getting their own stuff and approaching managers and other staff members to try to get food, refills, the correct drink, the correct food, the correct bill . The manager came and approached us and let us know that she was sorry, and some excuse and that she was going to take care of it, which she never did. I then had to get up from the table and approach the manager and the servers at the computers to try to get our bill so we can just leave And they hand me a bill I come back to the table and it’s not our bill. It’s the bill of the table next to us so I gave them their bill, and then went back over to get our bill. The manager told me she would bring it to me in two minutes. And we sat there for another 10 to 15 minutes without anyone approaching us so I walked back over to the computer at which point I was more irritated because we felt like we were being held hostage at this point. At this time. The Waitress then asked me what we ordered because she had to put the order in completely again because she lost our order so she couldn’t get our bill. This took at least another 15 minutes, Not one time did the manager, her or anyone offer to comp anything or make it up in any way shape or form. Finally, with me standing right behind them, they managed to get the bill, and I basically had to stand there over their shoulder to get it done, so that we can leave. On top of all of this, the food was not even good. I cannot understand for the life of me why they would have a server working there that was this incompetent but also I guess I can see that the managers were also because nobody had any customer service skills. Almost everyone at the restaurant had to get up and do the work for the restaurant in order to get through and get out.It was disappointing because I had spent so much money to stay at the hotel that night, and I had invited family to have a nice Christmas dinner together. And it was completely ruined. We were there so long, that we didn’t have time to walk around and spend time together like we had planned after dinner. Needless to say that I will never step foot in that restaurant...

I made a reservation for a large party. We arrived about 20 min early and I checked in with the hostess to let her know we were all there. We spent our time waiting in the beautiful hotel lobby and came back in time for our reservation. The hostess was nowhere to be found. There was a line of guests waiting to be greeted. Waiters and waitresses would come up to the hostess stand to use the credit card machine, but no one addressed us. It would've been nice to hear someone say, "The hostess will be with you in a moment..." After a few minutes she hostess eventually showed up and asked the first couple in line how many in their party. Then asked if they had reservations. They said no, and she said they were only taking parties with reservations... Why ask how many in the party if you're only going to turn them away?! Anyway, the hostess left again without saying anything to anyone else. After waiting about 10 min, she came back and I realized she was setting up our table. So it seems they were short staffed? Or maybe that's one of her duties? Either way it speaks of a lack of management. When we got to the table, we noticed that the table was too small. It was rectangular, and she had one person sitting in one of the corners. If I'm going to spend almost $40 on a meal,I don't expect to have someone sit on the corner of a table. It was an 8 person table for 9 people. We asked for an extra table, even a small one, so that we weren't bumping elbows with each other. She said she'd have to seat everyone else in line first and then find something. She never came back, but our waiter, who seemed inexperienced, but friendly and eager to help, brought out another large table and dressed it for us. After ordering everything, the waiter told us the wait for the food might be a little longer than normal... It was a nice day and we are all fairly patient, so we were fine with it. The table side guacamole was made it in the kitchen, not table side, and it was awful. Really, it was avocado and tomatoes. That's it. No salt, no cilantro, no lime, nor onions. It was so bad. We asked for salt and pepper shakers and never got them. After almost two hours of waiting, we received our food. The server, an unfriendly young lady, literally dropped each plate down in front of us. She seemed upset, and I know what difficult days are like serving the public, but she was almost confrontational. My mother in-law had a shocked look that her plate was dropped in front of her like that, and the server said, "Isn't that what you ordered?" The price of the food did not match the quality. I don't think I'd spend almost $40 for fajitas. The only really good thing was the waiter. You could tell he was trying, but just about to everything else was not worth the money or the wait. I tried to call and speak to the manager during the week and no one has answered either at the restaurant or the...

A beautiful, casual, unpretentious outdoor dining experience at the entrance of Mission Inn Hotel (to the right of valet parking). A reservation is recommended, especially on weekends when they are generally busy. (When I checked in for my Saturday evening dinner, the hostess had to turn away 3 parties in line ahead of me without reservations).

At time of this writing you should be aware the the menu that is posted on the Mission Inn website is inaccurate. They are attempting to update the menu. I came prepared to eat a salmon dinner, but had to make other selection as the actual menu is quite different (I posted several photos with this review of the current choices) Also if you are a wine drinker, you will receive a short list of white, rose and red choices from the Presidential Lounge, and have choice of Prosecco or Chandon Brut if you prefer sparkling bubbles. [This is a tequila bar :-) ]

While the decor may appear to be simplistic, if you take time to walk around, there is an obvious attention to detail. Space heaters, Mexican tiled tables and iron chairs, cement mission bells in strategic locations, a fire pit, suspended lighting, Chinese vases and decor in the building structure above the tables, a trickling fountain at the entrance and small but beautiful sitting area with antiques on the way to the restroom.

It is a beautiful dining experience at night when it is all lit up. The palm trees have been wrapped top to bottom with white lights - to match the white lighting at the entrance sign on way to check in desk of the hotel. There is a wonderful vibe throughout, I noticed several tables of large parties in my vicinity laughing, sharing and enjoying the food and drinks.

The food is delicious. I choose shrimp quesadilla, with a small side of salmon (on bed cabbage); I also received guacamole and sour cream side as I generally don't eat rice and beans. The guacamole was fresh and "pure" - there were no onion or other flavor additions, and it made a wonderful topping to the slices of quesadilla. I was quite full by the time I finished. If I had not been so full, I would have like to have enjoyed Flan, Tiramisu or cheesecake - maybe on our next visit for snack or lighter lunch.

Although the restaurant was busy, I did not feel like I had to wait excessive periods for my beverages or meal. My server Luis was very friendly and accommodating, he was able to suggest alternatives that were quite delicious.

The purpose of this meal was to celebrate my husband's birthday, but he fell ill in the afternoon and was unable to make dinner. He would have quite enjoyed the entire experience, so when we return for our next visit, will be sure to share the experience together.

Highly recommend for ambiance, service and group gatherings. But as stated probably best to make a reservation...
