Quick take: Get yourself to Rockaway Beach and try the original corn dog- the Pronto Pup! Corn dog lovers... This is your Mecca
Committing a bit of sacrilege on this stop of #TheGreatOregonBurgerBucketList, but when you're where the corn dog was invented, ya have a corn dog!
Pronto Pup corn dogs are clearly the O. G. of corn dogs, and that's not just because they were the first. Right away, we noticed how tasty the hot dogs were. Many corn dogs have hardly noticeable meat, but the pronto pups stand out! A delicious slightly smokey and still crisp dog was a treat. The stick was nice as well, not some nickel and dime stick but a substantial piece of wood that doesn't even think about bending or breaking.
But, far and away, it's all about the batter! That pancake inspired original batter is iconic yet familiar at the same time. Tastes like something a grandma or aunt would whip up for a family barbecue. The freshness of the batter stands out. Soft on the inside, crisp on the outside, but no gooeyness or burnt parts to be found. Gluten goodness surrounding delicious meat.
We had a variety of items while here. The Super Pup is for sharing or for gluttony, holy cow!! And, being so close to Tillamook, we had to try the cheesy pups- hunks of cheese friend in the Pronto Pup batter. The kind of thing that makes Homer Simpson drool, and it was too dang good!!

Read moreI was so excited to try pronto pups. We arrived and noticed that the parking lot adjoining the restaurant was roped off, so we drove cross the street to a large empty square gravel parking lot. It was raining, we ran across the street. We were waiting for our food when the owner came out and asked who had our vehicle, we said it was ours. He told us that we were parked incorrectly and that we had to be parked a different direction because the parking lot got really busy (we were on the front edge, parked parallel to restaurant and car on street, and he wanted us perpendicular, and the entire lot was empty). We pointed out there were zero signs or lines to indicate that. He told us it was "common sense" and indicated we needed to take our food to go. I felt very insulted that he implied we had no common sense, however we said OK. While waiting for our food, he started indicating to us to move our vehicle immediately by pointing and speaking angrily from outside He came inside and started yelling at us that he had already told us twice, and that it was his parking lot, to which we replied we hadn't yet received our food, he then yelled at his employee to give us our food NOW or our money back, at this point several other customers walked out with us, without ordering. I will never give this rude and verbally abusive owner another dime of my money and...
Read moreWe went to the food truck for the Fourth of July. The staff was really overwhelmed, and the person working the window was having to literally add the cost of items in his head for some reason?? Just a terrible system right off the bat.
Beyond that, the food just wasn’t good. The hot dog itself was basically a Costco dog, which is great, but the batter for the corn dog was really off. It needed to be sweeter, but it was really savory and grainy, which is offputting on a Corndog.
The final nail in the coffin was the price. $30 for 2 corn dogs and 2 waters. Not fancy corn dogs. Not for dogs stuffed with caviar. Just plain old corn dogs. Also, charging $3 for water that is very clearly out of a 24 pack from Safeway that probably cost $3 altogether is scummy imo. If you’re charging $12 for a plain corn dog then throw in a free $.20 water.
Overall wouldn’t recommend. Cute store front, but it just wasn’t worth the cost of a sit down restaurant to eat a 5/10 corn dog. Also, you’d think with the highway robbery Corndog prices that they could afford a POS system from the last 20 years instead of doing mental math for every customer and making the line take forever.
Edit: just saw a picture of their menu and realized that the corn dogs are priced at $8 usually. So they just price gouged for the Fourth of July. Yet another scummy business...
