Uncle Nick's in Rockford has become my go-to spot for delicious gyros, mouthwatering fries, and satisfying late-night cravings. This hidden gem is a true delight for food enthusiasts, offering a combination of fantastic flavors, friendly service, and convenient late-night hours.
Let's start with the star of the show—the gyros. Uncle Nick's knows how to make a gyro that will leave you craving more. The pita bread is perfectly soft and warm, encasing a generous portion of tender, seasoned meat, crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, and tangy tzatziki sauce. Each bite is a symphony of flavors that transports you to gyro heaven. Whether you choose the classic beef or opt for the tantalizing chicken gyro, you won't be disappointed.
Now, let's talk about the fries. Uncle Nick's takes their fries seriously, and it shows. These golden beauties are perfectly crispy on the outside, while remaining fluffy and tender on the inside. Whether you enjoy them on their own or as a side to your gyro, they are guaranteed to satisfy your cravings for the perfect fries. Don't forget to try them with their special seasoning—it adds an extra burst of flavor that takes them to the next level.
One of the standout features of Uncle Nick's is their late-night hours. When the hunger pangs strike after a night out or during a late-night craving, you can rely on Uncle Nick's to be there. The fact that they stay open late is a blessing for those seeking a delicious meal during unconventional hours. Their commitment to providing excellent food and service, even at late-night hours, is truly...
Read moreLet's be honest: it's not haute cuisine (and maybe not all of it is even "real" Greek food). It's not the very fastest or the very greatest "fast food" in the world, either, but if you are hungry, you could do a -lot- worse than here by a long shot.
This is the second location, father east (and with a drive through) than the more "famous" "mystery window" walk-up location at East State and Sixth Street.
I usually get a messy gyro of some sort or one of their non-messy bulk-bought filo dough spinach pies (these pies look small but are surprisingly very filling); others enjoy(?) their pizza puffs (same idea as the spinach pie, but with pizza-like filling). The baklava is tasty. The fries are "ginormous" portions. The pop is Pepsi products. The napkins are usually not enough (you'll probably need a few extras).
You've likely had some of this stuff made better, from better-looking places, and so on, but Uncle Nick's is a Rockford institution for a reason I cannot completely understand beyond their really late night operating hours and their affordable prices (and there being few gyro places in the area, and fewer places to eat real Greek food). The sometimes long lines generally move quickly enough, so your wait won't be as long as you think it will be. Yes, there is significantly better food in Rockford than from here, but sometimes you just want something cheap, filling, sometimes messy, and relatively fast to get and eat, and Uncle Nick's is your place at almost all hours of the...
Read moreI’ve always preferred this Uncle Nick’s location over the other one, and for good reason. While the other location has been serving significantly smaller portions—about 30% of the meat they used to provide—this one has consistently delivered. Every time I visit, the portions are generous, whether it’s the meat in the gyros, which are much larger than what the other location offers.
This location is also in a safer area, making it a more comfortable place to dine. I truly hope they continue to maintain the high-quality portions that have made Uncle Nick’s a beloved name in the Rockford community. Unfortunately, the other location has been hurting the brand with its portion and quality changes, and it’s becoming a topic of discussion on social media. It’s disappointing to see that decline, especially since it was the original.
That being said, this location is doing a fantastic job, and I encourage them to stick with the same quality and generous servings that keep customers coming back. However, I have noticed that the mushroom portions here have slightly decreased as well. Please consider returning to the original larger servings that we’ve come to love.
Keep up the great work, and I’m confident you’ll continue to thrive for years to come as long as you don’t change...
