This was the first time my daughter and I try Brown Sugar. We were dining in and the time was 3:30, early dinner, we were the only ones there. As soon as we walked in, the woman standing behind the desk didn’t welcome us right away. She was rude and “smileless” as someone else stated in another review. The soup was served lukewarm/room temp. The sushi was okay. The pad Thai and mango curry were ok too, served at a decent warm temp. I feel if she was a little nicer the food would have tasted better, but that’s just me. The thing that pushed me to rate this place at a one star was that same woman charged us $49.62 and the original bill was $41.17. I had put $0 for tip in the card and left $7 in bills on the table. When we walked out my daughter got a notification that we were charged 49.62. We went back in to let her know and she denied that’s what she charged on the card. We walked out again and called the credit card company and they comfirmed it was charged the 49.62. So I went back in and tell her this and she denies again showing me her computer shows otherwise. I told her give me back my $7 bills and we will call it a day. She rolls her eyes and goes back to talk to “management” comes back out huffs and pulls out the $7 from the cash register and proceeds to throw them down in front of me. I will not be going back to this establishment in the future. Also I remember saying “thank you” several times when we were served and not one “you’re welcome” Two thumbs down. Everyone who rated this 4 stars and up doesn’t know what good food and...
Read moreThis was once a go-to place for Thai food. But since covid, the owners seem to have given up. But I am getting ahead of myself.
I had been meaning to visit Brown Sugar for many weeks and finally got the opportunity ... I was in the area, and thought I would pick up some carry-out for dinner. It was 1:35 on a Tuesday afternoon. Their website says they are open from 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM. The sign in their window also says open Tuesdays 11:30 AM to 9:30 PM. However, I found the door locked, and the lights turned off ... clearly not open.
When I got home, I wrote an email to them. I was hoping for an explanation, if not an apology, but I got no reply at all after writing twice. So not only have they lost my respect and my business, but they have earned this negative review.
So here we are ... and, as it turns out, the food reviews have gotten increasingly bad over the past few years. I guess in a way, I'm lucky they were closed, since I didn't waste any money on bad food. Still, the posted hours should be accurate and, if a company doesn't care enough to monitor and reply to emails, then they shouldn't put a "contact us" link on their website ... really two very basic concepts.
I expect this place and their other location in Lakewood (with similarly poor reviews) will be closed by the end of 2025. Based on recent reviews and my own experience, it's obvious the owners have given up and no longer care. Thankfully, there are several other excellent Thai places nearby (I recommended Raan Thai in Fairview Park, but that's...
Read moreI had to compose myself to write this because I was dumbfounded. I called after getting sick eating the country style Pad Thai; I started feeling ill about halfway into it, and as it got worse, I stopped before finishing. Within 20 mins after that is when I got really sick. I called about 45 mins later, and they told me that the only way to get a refund is to go to the hospital for “proof it was from their food,” as if they analyze ingredient quantities in a sample and use mass spectrometry to track the origins of potential food poisoning. I told the manager I was not going to get a babysitter and spend the rest of the night in the ER for what, $13 dish. I told her that was an insane expectation, and if they couldn’t work with me on something so small, I would consider a negative review, but I understand what that does to a business’ rating, so I didn’t want to. She then threatened litigation if I were to post a negative review, and told me they have all my information now! As I sat there stunned, she quickly restated to go to the hospital and then hung up on me. Correct, I cannot prove with 100% certainty that I got food poisoning from here, but I can say with 100% certainty no one who actually cares about their customers would ever say these things, or threaten to use their personal information...
