So, full disclosure, I’m a lo mein fiend who grew up in Ohio. I am constantly on the hunt for those thick, chewy lo mein noodles (as opposed to the thin, angel hair feeling ones that I can’t get into). I live in Roger’s Park and my go to place is closed on Monday. So I was on the hunt. Stopped by Great Wall, ordered pork lo mein and wonton soup. Cashier was a doll, very polite, came back with my missing chop sticks with a smile. Get home, start to dig in. Soup was ok. Not awful, nowhere near the best. Wontons were a little heavy and there was waaaay too much sesame oil in the soup. I open the pork lo mein, immediately smacked in the nose by a super strong vinegar smell. It almost smelled like cole slaw. Left this reviewer very confused, but the smell dissipated pretty quickly. Couldn’t tell you who the culprit was. I see the noodles, nice thick and bouncy egg noodles, as expected. I take a bite, something is very wrong. The texture is off. feels like I’m eating a salad. Don’t get me wrong. I like vegetables in my lo mein. Carrots? Necessary. Celery, cabbage, spring onion? Of course! Bean sprouts? Sure. Tiny flakes of shredded lettuce? Now I don’t know what we’re talking about anymore. The lettuce shreds were everywhere and I couldn’t experience that silky bite of noodle and pork that I was craving. It was also very wet. Like, pools of brown liquid wet. Did I eat all of it? You bet I did. I paid for all of it didn’t I ( two more dollars and half the portion of my go to, btw). Will I be going back anytime soon? That’s a...
Read moreI love Chinese food so whenever I get a chance I stop by any Chinese restaurant on my way which happened to be this place on that day and my quick choice was beef fried rice. I sat outside waiting for the food and the cashier delivered the food to my table so I said thank you but without a reply he turned back inside. I started eating but I tasted a very weird flavor that I could not distinguish at first and usually I am super good at distinguishing flavors. The flavor was so overwhelming that I could not eat no more but it boggled my mind till I figured out that the chef has used old previously used oil from the deep fryer and he fried my Food in it. I have never had a heartburn in my life till that day and I am still suffering from it. It had to be extremely used oil for it to do that and the reason I could not distinguish the flavor at first was because he had fried so many different things in that deep fryer for anyone to distinguish the flavor. Very bad choice I made on that day and it’s a shame that any restaurant would think of...
