Schroeder's New Deli — Restaurant in Rome

I guess the service depends on when you go, because we've been going to Schroeder's for years and it's never been terrible. But on Thursday night, we had an inattentive server who passed our table time and time again - never acknowledging us. When she did finally stop to take our orders, she was not friendly, no "I'm sorry for the wait", nothing. The food took forever to be served and was delivered in the same manner. We had to ask for drink refills; she never stopped to ask if we needed anything. Maybe because I was already irritated by the lack of good service, my Turkish sub was "sub"standard. Very little turkey and it was all on one side of the sandwich. The place was moderately busy, and I only saw two servers. When I first got there, I stood for several minutes before a guy in the kitchen finally asked if he could help me with something. I said we would be a party of six, where should we sit? "Anywhere" was his reply and that was the last time anyone ever acknowledged us until at least fifteen minutes later. On this particular night, the fried mushrooms were not up to par - small, soggy, and the batter was falling off. All in all, it was a bad night. We were celebrating my daughter's birthday, and it was a bummer. (And just so you know, both of my daughters have been [and one still is] a server. So we don't have unrealistic expectations of what good service is...a simple cheerful "I'll be right with you!" in passing goes a long way when a server is busy and you're waiting) Schroeder's could benefit from reminding their wait staff to ACKNOWLEDGE customers when they walk in and, if they aren't going to seat them, to at least say, "Sit anywhere and someone will be right with you". I placed an order for curbside this evening and was told that it would be ready in 20-25 min. I wait the 25 minutes and call to tell them I am waiting outside. They inform me that my order isn’t even ready and to come back in 15 more minutes. I drive around and come back and they tell me that they are really busy and can’t bring it out to me. I told them my son was asleep and I didn’t want to wake him so I needed them to bring it out like they said they could. They tell me it’ll be a few minutes before someone can come out so I wait 10 more minutes and finally just go in. They weren’t even that busy and my order was still not complete. I was over charged for my food and every bit of it was burnt and my food was made wrong. I live 45 minutes away so I didn’t feel like driving back and I call to talk to the manager, her name is Robin. I explained the situation and she argued with me that I was wrong and when I told her that I wasn’t and my food was all messed up she hung up on me mid-sentence. I call back and she blocked my number. I call from another phone and they answered and I asked to speak to her again and told them that I was very upset with what she did. An employee named lacy told me that the manager was busy and to call back tomorrow (they’re closed Sunday) and I demanded to talk to her. Lacy then hangs up on me and blocks that number also. Schroeder's is a local staple and for good reason. I've never seen a restaurant be consistently good for so long. Usually restaurants in operation this long go through spells where they rest on their past successes. Schroeder's understands that their quality food, great atmosphere, and very low prices make an unbeatable combo. I hate to say it, but their prices really are a little low! I'm not complaining of course - just an observation. Everything I've tried on the menu is superb and I've tried most of it. Highly recommend the Roast Beef Relief and Potato Skins. One exception is the Chicken Salad Sandwich. Occasionally the Chicken Salad will be a little sparse. Atmosphere is excellent with several large screen TVs. Outside seating area in the back frequently hosts local bands. If you are a local and you haven't tried Schroeder's, I would say you aren't quite a local yet until you do!
