Penstock Coffee Shop & Roastery - Roselle Park — Restaurant in Roselle Park

Amid the changes to Union and Roselle, Penstock is one of my welcomed additions to the neighborhood. I used to stop by their main roastery, originally named OQ, back in 2017, in fact, I would go 40 when desperate to go their for their quality brewing and beans.

It brings me joy to say that quality is consistent in Union. This is a specialty coffee shop, so if you want to try curated beans for the first or hundredth time, you've come to the right place. So far, I've had their hand dripped brew, latte, and a hibiscus espresso tonic. The pourover was well brewed, they used an origami brewer iirc, and the coffee's notes were very clear. The latte was nice and smooth.

Last, their Hibiscus Espresso Tonic was a Pokemon-themed concoction for the Summer. Ori, the barista at the time, made it for me while we chatted. Little did I know that Ori was showing off their brewing chops: The drink was lightly sweet with floral and fruity notes from the hibiscus extract. The espresso added to that a fruity layer and bitter layer as did the tonic water. Although I don't remember the name of the drink, I do remember that it was a perfect start to a summer day.

While other cafes have plenty of variety and have great treats, this is the cafe someone should go to if they want to try experimental drinks and coffee that tries to show off its subtle details.

The staff are all friendly. There's drip coffee and cold brew if you want something quick, but espresso, matcha, and hand brewed drinks can take a couple minutes to make as they are brewed to order. The prices are generally par for the course of similar cafes, while the specialty items cost $7+. In terms of food, there are sweet treats like cookies and granola bars.

What a hidden gem! This newly opened coffee shop instantly won me over with its warm atmosphere and charming decor. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the air, and each cup is smooth, rich, and clearly made with care and passion. The desserts are beautifully crafted and pair perfectly with the drinks. Run, don’t walk to Penstock Coffee Shop & Roastery! Their coffee is hands down the best! We will now always get our bagged coffee from them for our coffee pot at home for days we can’t make it in to get one of their amazing creations!
