Pretty good sushi spot in the North Hills! There aren't too many good options for Asian food near Ross Park, so this is a good choice! I tried the cold sesame noodles, haru maki, Tomo roll, and tuna roll.
When I first tried the cold sesame noodles, I was a little disappointed. The sauce was too runny in my opinion, and it had a sauce that was heavy on the salt/soy sauce. I prefer cold noodles with a sauce that is thicker and similar to tahini. However, as I ate it more, I began enjoying it more! The portion is very fair and the sauce is not bad, either. 3.6/5
Haru maki is very similar to a spring roll. I loved it! It was full of vegetables and had a light sweetness to it. There was a perfect balance of crunchy on the outside and smooth, delicate vegetables on the inside. The sauce it was served with is also excellent (it's quite sweet but I like it that way)! 4.5/5 just because the portion is somewhat small.
The Tomo roll is very tasty! The eel on top is not soggy; rather, it is lightly sweet and flavorful. Sauce has a nice sweet flavor. The avocado is also quite fresh. The shrimp tempura on the inside with crunchy and well made all around. It's a bit expensive, but still fair. 4.5/5. This is my first time trying plain tuna sushi. I thought it wasn't very flavorful at first, but it is quite good when dipped in soy sauce. The roll is well made and the fish is fresh. Portion for the price is okay. 4/5.
Overall, this is a nice place to get sushi in the North Hills. Their special rolls are exciting and flavorful. The haru maki is great if you love spring rolls, and I've heard the egg rolls are amazing as well. May come back to try the Chinese dishes like...
Read moreI discovered this place a few months ago after a good friend of mine, who always accompanied me to Nakama, told me the food there (Nakama) made him ill the last two times he had been. I was very impressed the first time I went to Sushi Tomo, so much so that I now make it a habit to get lunch there once a week. The menu has a great variety and you can find something to please all palates and budgets. For someone looking to try out new things, I suggest a bento box...they make a couple large Supper-sized ones but many are lunch sized and give you soup, salad and a great little selection of sushi, tempura, maki and other Japanese foods. The sushi and sashimi is excellent, I recommend the Tri-color Usuzukuri if you're up for something a little different, 9 delectable cuts of 3 types of fish in a vinegary sauce with a jalepeno slice on each...amazing! Try the Chicken Noodle Soup with Miso broth too if you get a chance...it ain't your grandma's chicken noodle for sure but it will leave you stuffed (but wishing you had room for more!). For dessert, assuming you have any room left which isn't likely, try one of their three flavors of Mochi? Ice cream. Traditional Japanese Ice cream in a rice dough ball...Mango and Red Bean are my favorites! Anyway I obviously quite like this restaurant...as others have mentioned it's decor is a little dated/drab but the food is excellent and the staff is very friendly and the service is fast...tough to go wrong and on top of that they're a couple bucks cheaper than your typical Nakama meal too. If you like Japanese cuisine at all I highly recommend you...
Read moreSushi Tomo is my favorite place to dine at when my check comes in and my bills have been paid. If you do not like Japanese food don't come here. However if you enjoy Sashimi and Sushi this is the best place in the greater Pittsburgh area to get generous bites of sashimi and sushi rolls that don't skimp on the fillings. Full transparency: I have never ordered anything off the standard menu, only their sushi menu, I cannot speak to the taste or quality of other dishes. But, I.M.O. if you're going to a place called "Sushi Friend" and you don't order sushi you're eating wrong. I give the service and atmosphere 4/5 for admittedly petty reasons so my overall ranking still sits at 5 stars. If the management staff could provide the serving staff with teapots or teacups, for example, instead of the glass steins their hot beverages are currently served in that would bump it up to 5 stars for me. The servers themselves are always attentive and check in on me frequently. As for the atmosphere ranking in at 4/5, it's due to the music choices for me. There's something that just feels off about Taylor Swift and Chapel Roan playing in a Japanese restaurant, like I said it's a petty reason. Japanese covers of American pop songs do exist but finding high quality recordings of them can be really difficult so I understand why the choice was made and the 4/5 for atmosphere doesn't affect the final score of 5/5 stars. After all, the food is the most important part of a restaurant and they've served high quality generous portions every...
