By chance......I cannot believe I walked past this place heading towards our 2nd lunch choice as our first was closed. But the large sidewalk menu board reeled me back for a look. Disbelief,,......I called my friend over to take a look. The lunch menu choices read like a five star restaurant. But the prices read like a mom and pop shop. We decided to take a chance even though the outward appearance came across as a dark little bar. Once inside the first impression was that of a dark little bar. Plenty of friendly wait staff moving around however. Seated right away, drink order taken right away, food order taken upon drink delivery. Did we make a mistake......food took a little longer to arrive than expected. But, WORTH IT!!!! Presentation, portion and oh my god, taste. Not only written on the menu like a 5 Star, but my taste buds were confused as the setting cloaked the expectation of what had just arrived from the kitchen. Congrats to this place for hiding such an amazing chef. I've already scheduled return visits here with the family so that I can try at least six more of their dishes. As far as the bartender, I'm not much of a drinker, but my friend makes up for me, he was very pleased. But I did enjoy listening to the bartenders knowledge and description of drinks to those he was serving. His pleasant personality, neatly dressed appearance mixed with the dark framed glasses and well groomed graying facial hair makes you feel like you're a part of a high class mixology commercial. Anyway, make the trip, place on your to go list, this place is way more than it appears.

It was our first time eating here. We came because my friend who I went with recommended it, and honestly, 1920 Tavern did not disappoint. The food was soooo good, and the staff was so friendly and accommodating! It was my birthday, and when they brought out the desserts, they had brought it out with a candle and even got us an extra candle for the little cupcake my friend gifted me. Definitely a memorable experience, and I want to thank Reggie and Lucas who went out of their way to make sure we were set with everything and had a great time. There was also another staff member who we spoke with about the menu with, but I can't recall if he ever told us his name. But yes, I absolutely recommend if anyone is on the fence about coming here, DO IT! For anyone with gluten sesitivities, the menu is labeled to let you know what's safe to eat as well as the staff just being knowledgeable about their menu. We had gotten the smoked salmon crostinis as our appetizer. For our main course, we had the braised boneless short ribs, lamb chops, and seared ahi tuna as well as two additional sides. I can appreciate a place that compliments me whenever I order my lamb rare, haha. For dessert, we ordered bread pudding, the peanut butter cake with bacon pieces, and MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE, the creme brulee. The caramelized sugar with the berry compote was absolutely everything! Everything was cooked to perfection, and I honestly can't wait to come back for another event or even just a casual dinner with friends or family. Thank you so much for the experience!

[TL;DR] Go on a Monday. Why? Half-off bottles of wine. We had the pleasure of a private dining experience. We were one of the crazy ones that went when it was supposed to snow. All it did was rain. Everyone stayed home though. It was great! Oversized booths, dark wood, and painted up mirrors define the atmosphere here. It's broken-in luxury, in a way. It's like an old, leather-bound book. Our waitress was amazing. She really knew her food. If only I remembered her name! Everything we ordered was based on her recommendation which was quite on point. The SPINACH AND ARTICHOKE DIP was very tasty, served with crispy toast. Rather small though to share between more than two people. Your waistline might appreciate that. We tried the BLACKENED MAHI MAHI which is served with a goat cheese potato puree as they call it. Looks and tastes like mashed potatoes. :o) The fish was cooked tenderly and seasoned delicately. Not really my thing, honestly. I prefer fish that has more flavor. The crowning achievement of the night was the SHORT SMOKED DRY RUBBED CHICKEN. This is the thing you come here for and that which you will remember of the place. (Not the burger, the meatballs, the steak, the fish, the charcuterie, the oysters, etc.) This is what you need to get. It comes on a bed of triple cream mac and cheese mixed with crispy brussels sprouts. The creaminess pairs very well with the dry rub. They have a pretty impressive selection of whisky, including one of my favorite scotches -- Highland Park.

Gonna be honest… we had complete plans on going to the Roux next door. We have ate there before and enjoyed it and planned on a return. We were disappointed to see it was randomly not open when we went, on a night it should have been. So, we tried here instead since it was close. We were not disappointed. Service was a touch slow, but mainly because they were busy. We sat outside where it was a little cool and rainy so that we could get a table quicker. The heaters and cover made up for the conditions. We got the Brussel sprouts for an appetizer. We had just been in San Antonio and got some amazing ones there as well as Omaha for some good ones, and wanted to compare. They were not our new favorite, but well worth eating. I tried their seafood gumbo, and it was quite good. Would look forward to it again sometime. For our meals, we got the following. MARK°S SHRIMP & CHICKEN CAJUN ALFREDO - Served with button Mushrooms, Spinach, Sundried Tomatoes, tossed in a Cajun Alfredo sauce on a bed of fettuccine and topped with parmesan & cheese SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN DINNER - Flash Fried Twin, French cut Chicken Breast with Garlic Potato Purée. Sautéed Southern Green Beans, Maple Glazed Corn Muffin, and finished with a Rustic Country White Gravy Both were very good, and well worth getting again. Over all, a very good experience, and not disappointed at our backup option, even though we didn’t get to go where we had planned. Now it’s a toss up on which one we’d want more next time.

Original (7.19.2019): Fun atmosphere! Right in the heart of downtown Roswell. It was packed on an Alive in Roswell Thursday at 8. Great service. Loved their 1920 House Margarita rimmed with sugar and Mother of All Mimosas. One of my mom’s favorite wines ever is their Bliss Cabernet Sauvignon. We had 3 drinks for $30, which is fairly reasonable! We didn’t get any food. We will definitely be back though! Updated (11.20.2020): My previous review was just for drinks. This review is for takeout only. We ordered takeout at 7:40 on a Friday night and it was ready 15 minutes later. Make sure to ask for cutlery and napkins because we were not given any. We got the Amazing Burger ($15.95) because a friend highly recommended it. Maybe we went in with too high of expectations. We were very disappointed. We got one with fries and one with Brussels sprouts. The burger was topped with Gruyére cheese and mushrooms. I just wasn’t impressed. The cheese was weird for the burger. The fries were not crispy at all. They were just limp potatoes. The only saving grace was the Brussels sprouts. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt because it was takeout and we didn’t eat at the restaurant. However, we will not be going back for food.

Our party of 6 had a reservation for noon on Friday. We were so excited to try the tavern as the reviews and pictures looked really great. When we got to the host stand unfortunately, I was not acknowledged for a while even though the hostess was there - not on the phone or anything. No worries, we proceed to our table which was all the way in the rear of the restaurant, past many, many empty tables. No worries, we sit down and order our beverages and some appetizers - chargrilled oysters, eggplant fries, BBQ smoked wings and crab & shrimp dip. For our meals, we had the shrimp and grits, parmesan crusted grouper, the black and bleu steak salad, a classic cheese burger and Sesame Encrusted Seared Tuna. The food all came out hot and fresh but the consensus of the group was that the food didn't have much flavor or seasoning. Again, we could tell it was all fresh, it was just bland. I didn't get our waiter's name but he was definitely on point with the service. We may give it another shot but there are so many other options in the area, it may be a while before we come back.
