Food was very good, but a little pricey. The additional charges for the option to “create” your meal was questionable. Add ons were an add’l charge, BUT if you picked an add-on, the meals original side dishes of potatoes or veg were then omitted…customer was then charged for the add-ons but in reality it was a substitution for the original menu + the price of the “add-on”. No $ compensation or adjustment was offered for the sides removed from the meal. We questioned this and were confused by the response…it seemed a bit of a money making ruse right there.
Wait staff was good and employees friendly. We were surprised to see valet parking. The restaurant did not seem crowded enough to warrant valet parking, but it was mandatory if you parked on the property. The normal parking area is chained off, forcing cars into a short valet station dangerously in the busy fast moving roadway.
Upon leaving we were then surprised again when we caught a glimpse of a sign stating that valet parking was a charge of $2.00 a car. We assumed that was an effort on the restaurants end to guarantee the parking attendant a tip of $2.00 per car. With that in mind, we handed him the $2.00 and got in our car. The parking attendant then proceeded to double back and knock on our window to tell us he works off of gratuity only and we did not include a tip. Very inappropriate. Tipping is optional but it’s also what we assumed we did when handing him the $2.00. We are from the NY/NJ area and have never been charged a fee for valet parking plus a tip. It is one, or the other. Regardless of what the $2.00 was for, it was very inappropriate for him to knock on our window asking for gratuity. Who is benefitting from the $2.00 mandatory fee?? The restaurant? I hope not. Shame on the owners of the restaurant for putting your employees in that position of literally stopping a car to ask for a tip. If it happened to us, it happened to many others. If a car chooses to only pay the parking fee then the employee should take gratuity or additional payment up with their manager, not bang on car windows customers who just paid $221.00 for only four meals, one glass of wine, and no dessert, plus a $40.00 tip. Is charging for valet parking really necessary? Perhaps wait staff should pay the valet attendants out of their tips, or the owners pay the attendants more. Another idea is to give your $2.00 parking fee to your attendants.
Charge $2.00, give it to the employee + their compensation + whatever tips people CHOOSE to offer. It was made out to be that Hugo’s is not paying their valet attendants - teenagers! Forcing them to shame a customer by knocking on the car window asking for additional cash for a tip is inappropriate.
Is this restaurant seriously keeping the $2.00 per car? Seems wrong. If that $2.00 is so important to the restaurant, add it to the check as patrons are checking out. Most people do not carry...
Read moreOn this past Sunday evening I set out to get some Chargrilled Oysters. The place I use to frequent for them stopped serving them after COVID. :( I was going to go to C&S Seafood but I saw way too many things that would have completely put me way over my Sunday Eat out budget. LOL! I saw Hugo's before in my search of restaurants another day but decided not to go because of the distance it is from my house on the East side of Dekalb county. Well yesterday I decide to just make the drive. If the food was good then it would worth it. Upon arriving the Valet was very friendly. The host sat me rather quickly. Even jokingly letting me choose my booth. I was greeted by Hannah. I immediately ordered the Chargrilled Oysters and a Moscow Mule. After all the Oyster's were my priority in choosing Hugo's. Well after I placed my order my visit turned sour, at my own doing. I quickly figured out that I had left my bank card either in my car or at home and I only had limited cash. I immediately informed Hannah who informed the Manager. I wish I remembered the Manager's name. I let her know that I had enough to cover what I had already ordered but of course I was there for dinner and would want to order more. She was so kind and understanding to my situation. She let me know that there was a bank less than a mile down the road, and agreed to allow me to pay for what I had already ordered and to go to the bank and return to my same seating to finish my dinner. Any other establishment or person I may have come across more than likely would not have been as understanding. This was so embarrassing and she made sure to make me feel okay in the situation. After I returned with my cash, Thank God for technology to use the ATM without a card, I ordered The Stuffed Shrimp with Mac and cheese and Okra. For dessert I got the Beignets. Everything was Amazing. The Chargrilled Oysters Alone were worth my 30+ min Drive. The Shrimp were delish and not Fried like most Stuffed Shrimp. I love it like this. The Okra were some of the BEST fried Okra I have had. And being from GA I have had a lot of fried okra. The sauce with the Beignets was Amazing. If I have to give any negative feedback it would just be that I wish the breadcrumb topping on the Mac & Cheese was toasted a bit more and that the Beignets were slightly over cooked. Other than that my entire experience, minus my left card mishap, was Amazing. I would recommend this place to everyone who wants some good seafood. I will be back sooner than later. I love Chargrilled Oysters!!!! Glad I choose Hugs's for my Weekly Sunday...
Read moreWow, such a huge disappointment! The IG posts are not at all true to what we received. First let me state that Nathan, our server, was kind and accommodating so that was the only positive unfortunately. We ordered the Cajun egg rolls, the oyster sampler and 1/2 doz. Of the chargrilled oysters to start us off. The egg rolls were just salty and nothing else. With crawfish, andouille sausage, boudin, collard greens as the main ingredients, you would think some of those flavors would come through, but it was the exact opposite. My husband and I are true foodies and my husband is also a chef, so when I tell you there’s nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing Cajun about those egg rolls, I mean it! Now the oysters were just as bad. First off, we were automatically able to tell that they were extremely small. It seems that when you order oysters that are prepared with some sort of topping, they must select the smallest oysters to give you and then dump all of these toppings to make it look like something. Out of the 12 oysters we had, between my husband and I, we only had 4 oysters that were of decent size. The rest were small as a grape and we only tasted the toppings!!! Not to mention the shells were completely black from being on the grill too long, which was never my experience with all of the chargrilled oysters I’ve eaten in NOLA. As far as the drinks, mine was just ok, I forget its name, but it was pink and came in a martini glass, which I didn’t expect since it wasn’t a martini, and my husband’s Long Island ice tea looked like a coke, which means the alcohol in it was was minimal. And yes, he confirmed that it was very weak, but decided against the hassle of returning it. After this lackluster experience, we decided to not order any entrees due to fear of more disappointment, so we just paid the $86 bill and left. Please be advised, they profess to be a Cajun restaurant, but based off of what we had, this spot is anything but. If you’re looking for real chargrilled oysters like we were, this IS NOT the place to get them, so our...
