The server and the service was great! We enjoyed a staycation at Kalarari and wanted to try one of the on-site restaurants during our stay. We had a few vegan family members with us and Cinco Niños had the best compromise for plant-based options at Kalahari ... more details below.
The good: Our server was great. The place was clean, uncrowded, and we were seated prior to our reservation time. Food came out quickly, and follow up service was prompt. The food presented well and the dishes looked appetizing. The plant-based mushroom & cauliflower tacos were great once some salt was added.
The bad: The glasses used (more like a thicker, traditional martini glass) for the dressed margaritas did not work well and salted the drink beyond enjoyment. These were the first things ordered and started the meal out a little rough, but the server's response and solution were greatly appreciated. The proportions for some of the appetizers are on the small side considering the price. A table of four or more may need to order two of each appetizer. We are not big eaters, the proportions felt like they were on the smaller size. In general ... the food could use more salt. This is better than having the food overly salty or excessively seasoned, but we noticed several of us adding salt to the dishes. This could be due to less-than-quality accompanying ingredients ... although, everything looked good, just lacked flavor. We don't normally salt our food, but found it necessary with several dishes here. The street corn was oily and lacked flavor. We could not tell if they just heated up canned corn in some oil or it was the quality of the other accopanying ingredients that were lacking. The dish did not feel or taste like a quality street corn ... the dish lacked seasoning and had little pop to it from the other ingredients.
We ordered two margaritas, one dressed (with salt on the rim), one not. The drinks came in a glass that allowed the majority of the salt to be washed into the drink making it rather unpleasant to enjoy after they placed it on the table. Servicing that drink in a different glass will likely help prevent that issue.
We now know what to expect ... a Tex-Mex restaurant around Austin has some high bars set for food quality and quantity (not as critical). In gereral ... yes, this is a Tex-Mex food restaurant inside Kalahari. It services the main outdoor pool area and will likely work well for most, but we won't likely try this place again the next time we are here. As inconvient as it may be ... traveling a short distance outside the resort will likely better satisfy your...
Read moreSuch a fun night! We are Round Rock locals and hadn't made it to Kalahari yet. For our 10 year wedding anniversary we decided to check the hotel out!
After walking around and checking out all of our dining options (there are quite a few!) we chose Cinco Ninos because it was cutely decorated (their tex-mex Christmas trees are gorgeous!) and inviting although a little challenging to find on the first floor.
As soon as we sat down chips and salsa were delivered. The chips were so so good- warm and crispy! The salsa wasnt terrible but it's not spicy at all- and it has some pretty intense garlic aftertaste. Not a show-stopper at all, especially for hotel food.
We ordered the chicken/beef fajitas for two. Being lifelong Texans we've had plenty of fajitas, but I believe these were the best we've ever had! So tender, warm, and perfectly seasoned. Our only spot for criticism here is that the corn tortillas were tough to chew, but the flour tortillas were soft and flavorful. The portions are GENEROUS and the dinner is presented in a way that a couple can share the fajita meat but have their own options on sides.
We ordered a sangria and a margarita that we were both super happy with! The bartender was sweet to advise our waiter that my drink request may not have been best and she recommended something else. She was spot-on and I appreciate her watching out for me! What she recommended was perfect! A generous amount of alcohol for both drinks and so so tasty!
The true winner of the night though was our waiter, Isaiah. He gave us the perfect balance of excellent, attentive service and leaving us alone enough to enjoy our conversation. He also made honest and thoughtful recommendations and suggestions on menu options that really met exactly what we wanted.
Could not have had a better anniversary dinner! Everything was perfect and so good! If you find yourself at Kalahari looking for restaurant options be sure to visit Cinco Ninos- and be sure to...
Read moreTerrible service and food We get there after a day at the water park and it's pretty dead, we are seated and about 10 mins go by and we don't see a waiter or waitress. I went to the bar and asked the bartender if we could get some menus. About 5 mins later Finally a waiter gets to us. We order and when we get our food wich was surprisingly fast, too fast. This is usually indicative of everything being precooked sitting in warming bins or worse, microwaved. Well... 1 plate had peppers when we asked for none, the second plate the rice was over cooked and on the last plate the beef fajita was very very well done, it was grey(microwaved?), wich made it like rubber and corn tortillas were so chewy and hard to the point of being inedible, well to get flour tortillas I again had to ask the bartender to get our waiter as he was no where to be seen. We finally get the flour tortillas and they are obviously generic food service tortillas that were microwaved. We finish what we could, again ask the bartender to call our waiter over and get 1 more round of drinks and the check, another long wait for him to come back with the check and saying the bartender is backed up do you want it to go,(we could clearly see the bartender, doing nothing but cleaning) as if we were the inconvenience to his night and we should stop disturbing him from what ever he was doing that made him take so long to get to our table. We had to find food off site. Disappointed would be an understatement. A response would be...
