Yelp Shmelp. Reviews motivated me to trek to RR, so we loaded up and headed out. I remember the original Tokyo Steak House off Far West from back in the day. After tonight's visit to the "new" TSH & Sushi Bar, I'm not planning another trip far north.
After we stepped inside, the memory of the old joint's charm with its Japanese screens and bamboo wallpaper and older Japanese waitresses in kimonos was officially obliterated. It felt like at least 3rd generation of "under new management" may have occurred.
This large and vacuous space is devoid of even an attempt at decor. Concrete floor, ten or so large hibachi grills surrounded by 10 or more diners, with vent hoods busily at work diffusing the considerable heat and smoke as the chefs whip up their surf, turf and 'volcanic' onion infernos. Other than the vent hoods and the service bar, I recall no only architectural elements in this barn-like interior. The sushi bar area felt like it had been cut and pasted into the center of the space from an industrial 'business traveler' hotel restaurant coffee shop/restaurant in LA (Same commercial furniture). We had reservations and arrived about 10 minutes early, and were told there would be about a 15 minute wait. We looked around and saw a small waiting area--with overstuffed 'hungryman' size sofas piled with other waiting parties.
Harsh lighting. Head-splitting noise. Cheers and clanging utensils--as you'd expect. No plants, no walls, nothing to buffer the sound--so volume was very high.
Service at the hostess desk was underwhelming--having "buzzed" us to the front via our plastic flashing pager just to summon us to see if we were still there--table not all the way ready just yet. We had opted to wait outside on the patio where a dead sparrow lay on the floor at the back. x_x
My appetizers (soup and salad) were mis-counted and omitted from the tray, so I got to wait a few minutes while waitress re-counted the orders and re-confirmed to reconcile why the kitchen was shorting her.... After not-too-long a wait, my items showed up.
Had to ask for a glass to accompany a Japanese beer. OK, another second trip. The salad dressing was good, and very close to the original. Nothing else, however was familiar. Soup was salty chicken stock with fried onions that had sunk to the bottom of the bowl and a few shaved fresh mushrooms and scallions.
Chef was friendly and skilled, and as you'd expect, this family-style hibachi dinner is dinner with a show...which we were expecting. But pelting each guest (more than a few times) at the table with flying fried rice was a little overkill for me. Do-overs were laughable for the kids at the table. However, when a senior citizen grandma has to dig rice out from inside her sweater, and my neck was burned from an air-borne cluster, I was pretty much done--holding up my napkin so as not to take on grease stains to the blouse. Kids enjoyed the folly, however.
As to the quality of the meal, not sure I would categorize this place as $$. My entree (combo) was $31 for filet mignon and chicken breast. The shrimp appetizer was overcooked. Fried rice was enjoyable. My filet was slightly overcooked, and unpleasantly over-salted. Chicken was just ok. My takeout will probably be tossed.
From the rest of our party, Salmon was cooked nicely. Tempura was a little too enthusiastically battered. Yakisoba noodles were well-received by younger and older set.
There was no delicious chilled orange supremed with toothpicks at the end of dinner. Just a hand-out of styrofoam containers and guest checks. We loaded a couple of trays and headed out. A couple of tables were really having a raucous good time, patrons gobbling up more flying bits of shrimp--even following the meal. We had an enjoyable time--but I've been to many hibachi restaurants that did a much better job.
There was a lemon on the floor behind where the neighboring chef had performed.
Tokyo Steak House sadly is just a memory for me.... There are too many exceptional restaurants in this area to justify going...
Read moreWell, let's try this the second time I think I added too many pictures and videos and it got stuck in my phone and when I had to shut the phone off I lost the review!!!! Anyway, my daughter had decided to have a small gathering in memory of her son who passed away December 2022, and whose birthday was St. Patrick's Day. She made reservations and determined that a Teppanyaki table accommodated 10 people. It ended up being perfect for our group. I have been here many times as it's an absolute all-time favorite of all of our grandchildren so we celebrated many birthdays through the years ,here . The hubster is not fond of it as he feels like it's expensive, but he does not take him into consideration that you're getting a show with your meal !! Part of it is that he doesn't eat rice and he's not fond of the Teppanyaki style cooking!!! Now for the positive there is another menu available and it offers sushi that is good quality so that's what he orders when we go there. My daughters 86-year-old mother-in-law also ordered off the menu and had a appetizer of coconut shrimp with a green salad and their delicious ginger dressing and she was very satisfied with her meal.. That left eight of us that decided to have Teppanyaki, and once the staff took our protein orders ranging from lobster to steak, shrimp and chicken--we all were excited as our our talented chef arrived at the griddle . During the initial part of the show, (when there's lots of fire) out server was delivering bowls of hot broth and iceberg lettuce salad with that delicious ginger dressing they make !!! Those come along with all Teppanyaki meals. Leaving some pictures and videos below so you can see part of our show Our heavenly grandson used to love coming to Tokyo steakhouse for the show and for the food!!! I can't even tell you how many bowls of fried rice he would eat! All of our meals were good and proteins were prepared and we received exactly what we ordered. Stack of griddled vegetables was also cooked along with a huge mountain of fried rice. Complete with all the yummy things that go in it, especially eggs. We enjoyed the show. We all had great memories to share. If you do have a birthday in your party, there is a special celebration where some of the staff come over with Japanese drums and sing, happy birthday and present you with a complementary dessert. I had visited with our chef a little bit and determined that he had three years of training before he was able to come out in front of a griddle that contained paying guests . We all had a good time, the food was good if a little pricey, and the atmosphere is a lot of fun. Try it for a special occasion we think you'll...
Read moreFirst off I'd like to say I hate writing bad reviews, but I feel like I gave this review a fair chance.
I went there just the other day and had a pleasant experience. The wait time was not long, we waited a maximum ten minutes, and and was seated with another family. The hibachi grill was fun and exciting and the cook running the grill was fun and friendly. They started off the meal with an onion soup consisting of Broth, mushrooms and fried onions. The fried onions was definitely an interesting choice, I think caramelized onions would have been better. The fried onions were soggy by the time it reached the table, but the soup Broth was delicious. Next up was the salad. The salad dressing was thin, but tasted decent, but the salad mix was cheap lettuce mix you'd get from walmart. But I didn't expect anything different. I ordered the veggie spring rolls and a strawberry daiquiri. My spring rolls came hot, but unfortunately they came semi burnt. I decided to overlook this because im not picky about small details like this. The sweet and sour sauce was definitely cheap, however, and very thinned down. I would have appreciated better sauce. However, they forgot about my drink and i waited 20 minutes for them to bring it out, after i reminded the waiter of my order.
My mother and I chose the grilled salmon with steamed rice, and was not disappointed with the portion size. They gave us enough salmon to fill us up & have enough for leftovers. My only complaint was the salmon was not marinated which would have helped counteract the strong fish taste of salmon. At the end of the night our total for two meals, appetizer and a drink, we paid about 75 dollars before the tip. Do I think the 75 dollars was worth the experience? Probably not, but my mother and I brought home enough food for three meals so next time we come, we will definitely skip on the appetizers and drinks.
Overall had a fun experience. The only reason my rate is so low is because of the atmosphere could be better, and the small hiccups during our meal. I will consider coming...
