Went for a wine makers dinner and was only allowed to buy wine from one wine maker. Couldn't buy a glass from bottles that we're on the wall, that they sell by the glass any other day. Irritating.
---In regards to your response below, while I certainly understand that the package I paid for was going to be food paired with the featured wines, I did not actually go to their winery. I went to your establishment that serves 40+ wines. I expected to be able to order from the selection you have in house when ordering additional drinks beyond the basic package. Were I to go to any winery in Michigan, I'm sure they wouldn't tell me that they wouldn't sell me particular wines that they have on hand and normally sell.
I used to run a bar and many times would work with both beer and liquor companies that would do substantial spends with our bar to promote their brand. This usually would express itself in the form of specials (read low prices) on whatever was being promoted, paid for by the promoting company. Never in my long tenure as general manager would I have refused a paying customer wanting a competitors product instead of what we were promoting that day. The low prices encouraged but didn't force your choice.
You mentioned respecting the wine maker who drove to present his wines but what of respecting the actual customer who paid to be there. It would be different if the winery in question was buying the drinks for me (beggars can't be choosers) but that's not the case here. Did this winery pay you to not sell others products that day? Because I certainly paid you for the dinner and drinks package and find it silly to not be sold something that is clearly in house. Not to mention, I was told by our server that I could purchase a non-featured bottle to take home just not a glass while on site. I'm not sure how that respects your featured winery when I can still buy a competitor's bottle.
Obviously you can enact any policy you want for your functions but removing choice from a customer isn't one that I would recommend.
P.S. I did enjoy the food and the wine wasn't bad. The policy is what I...
Read moreI planned a group wine tasting for a bachelorette party and it was very easy to make a group reservation via email. The ordering process was simple too (just circle what you want), which made it hard for them to mess anything up with such a large group. Check out was quick and easy as well with each person paying separately. They did the whole checkout process at the table with tablets using the menus that we circled as reference. The servers were very friendly and accommodating. I also liked that I was able to bring cupcakes to our group reservation. The wine selection was large enough to accommodate everyones taste, but not so large that you didn't know which to choose. The space was large enough to accommodate our group of 15 people without feeling cramped. My only (small) suggestion would be that they make the restrooms unisex. There are two single restrooms and the women's room always had a line while the men's room was empty. Overall, it was a great experience and I will probably be back for another event...
Read moreEnjoyed an anniversary gift from our daughter at Michigan By The Bottle in Royal Oak. Kim and the management staff were absolutely fantastic. We were treated to 3 flights of wine of our choosing and one large pour. Our flight came with cajun snacks and chips with mexicali, spinach and hummus dips. There was a a wine tasting class going on and Peter the director of wine education, came over and spoke with us after the class where we ended up purchasing one of the featured wines he spoke on. MBTB offers a nice selection of Michigan wines. It is a very relaxing and fun atmosphere. They offer music on Saturday nights and other eclectic events on a monthly basis. We ended up joining the Little Sippers Club so that we can partake in many of the activities they have to offer and the amenities offered as a club member. It was a wonderful way to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon on our anniversary. Thank you baby girl and MBTB for this gift and a...
