The first time I went there it was EXCELLENT. Fabulous food and service. A group of us went for lunch on a Saturday and the buffet was absolutely delicious. So many amazing choices and fresh.
So a few weeks later when it was time to take my boyfriend's son out for supper for his birthday, we had raved about this place so this is where he wanted to go. We took him on a Friday night, there were 5 of us total in the party. We didn't know there wasn't a buffet, we were a little disappointed about that but were excited to try menu items. We all ordered and waited at least 30 minutes for our food to arrive, which I couldn't understand because there were less than 20 people total in the whole restaurant. The food started coming out bit by bit all except for the birthday boy. his food FINALLY came out and it was wrong. so that meant an even longer wait for him to eat. We were all pretty much done by the time he got his food.
I asked to speak to the manager about it and I voiced my concerns in a very nice manner. he apologized and said he would take care of it. he takes the check and comes back a few minutes later where he had taken $5 off the total bill. Naturally I wasn't happy nor was I pleased about this as I did not feel this was the proper way to handle the situation and I told him this. His response to me? "Well, it's better than nothing." At this point I'm seeing red. We all get up, pay our bills and leave never to return. Do not waste your time or your money on a restaurant that treats it's customers this way. Save yourself the trouble and eat...
Read moreA truly mediocre (at best) restaurant. We went in at 2pm on a Saturday and were immediately informed that they had "just had a large group come through" which presumably would explain why their buffet might be missing or low on some items. They repeatedly offered to make fresh anything we would like, which was nice of them. However, the food sitting out at the buffet had obviously been there a long time and there's no excuse for that - the beans and queso both had "skins" over them from being out for so long; the rice was completely dried out and crusty; the lettuce was swimming in water and looked limp and colorless; there were at least two houseflies circling the buffet. The overall atmosphere was not terrible, but the floor was dirty and we did not see anybody attempting to clean anything. What food was there was bland and flavorless (even the fresh rice they brought out for us), and the salsa had an almost alcoholic flavor (as if it had gone bad or had far too much vinegar). We didn't eat much, and we found out when we went to pay that it was a $9 buffet (which was not posted anywhere in the restaurant, neither are their hours of operation). Overall it's just not great, and it really pales in comparison with all of our wonderful choices in Ruston (particularly when there are at least 5 other Mexican...
Read moreI just want to preface my review by stating that they have the best coffee I've had in a while, in some very pretty ceramic mugs. It's worth it by itself, and ask for "El café del caballero".
It's a small, quaint place that focuses on Mexican and Centroamerican food, with generous portions, friendly service, and excellent prices. I suspect it's family-owned, and it shows on the staff's warm demeanor, with interesting small talk and delicious food.
There is also a shop with domestic and imported goods, although I didn't buy anything from there. Plenty of foodstuffs and leather goods there!
All in all, a surprisingly warm and tasty...
