Orphan

I met up with a few buddies of mine on a Friday (4/26) afternoon for lunch. Never been here before. Orphan came up as a search result on Google AI maps based on top rated restaurants with vegetarian option. Is it top rated? Here is my impression.

The place is neatly located in a quiet neighborhood on a street corner near McKinley Village. Parking is limited; I had to park in the neighborhood but makes for a nice walk in. The place is cozy, clean, and welcoming. They seat you only when everyone in your party is present. There’s outside patio seating which is cool.

There are several menus a breakfast and a lunch. We were given the breakfast one and had to look up the lunch menu online.

Our server was pretty chill. Friendly but not over bearing. He was able to answer our questions and offered a few recommendations. Service is a 4/5 (ding for having to wait to be seated and given only the breakfast menu).

Our food arrived hot from the kitchen within 15 minutes of ordering. I ordered the vegetarian bowl but added grilled chicken protein to it. It came out great! Presentation is spot on and the taste was excellent! Perfectly seasoned and not too saucy. Chicken was delicious. Definitely a solid 5/5.

The meal set me back about $25 with tax and tip and water. A little pricey for lunch. The value to price ratio is an easy 4/5.

I will definitely return with the family and try out some of the other items on the menu. If you are in the area looking for a relaxing place to grab a nice bite to eat, this place will not disappoint if you are okay with paying more for lunch. Keep in mind this place ONLY accepts cash. No credit cards. They do have an ATM inside. This can be an inconvenience for some folks.

Overall experience dining here is about a 4/5.

WORST SERVICE I've ever had to deal with. I came in around 11 o'clock this morning, Tuesday the 21st. I came in for a special breakfast for my birthday with my mom and was extremely disappointed in the staff. As a person who works in the service industry I would never treat a customer like this. The first women I had the displeasure of meeting didn't say good morning and told us to pick a table that had a menu on. My mom mentioned it was my birthday and was hoping to get a corner table that had a couple things and was clearly not bussed. She said she had to bus it and went back to doing whatever she was doing. We waited for a little and the table was still not bussed, finally we sat down and she of course came right over and said how she needed to clear it. We asked if she wanted us to get up and she said “ its fine now” in a very snippy tone. We waited ten minutes to get a server. It was clearly not that busy. Finally we get a server who had no personality. Again doesn't greet us, just asks what we want. We put in our order, get our food which was decent and then we don't see her again until we get out check. Didn't check in or anything. Through out this, I have heard the very rude front person say have a good day to others and didn't hear anything when we left. Another women who held the door open didn't say anything either. We said thank you and got a rude “welcome”. Never...

Wow talk about being taken by surprise. We found this place by looking up breakfast places to eat at. This one caught our eye because of all the photos. The food looked great.

  • side note ** they only except cash or check. That's what is written in plain sight on the door. Just incase anyone doesn't see it.

We arrive, get sat and start looking over the menu. Not going to lie I was stuck on what to order. Nothing was jumping out at me. Everything based off the descriptions just seemed so bland and boring. I genuinely had no idea what to order so when our server asked if we were ready I said yes even though I wasnt and ordered the savory pancakes. I wasnt enthused with my order because the description said there was jalapenos in these pancakes. I had no idea what to expect when they arrived.

Well I must say I was so so shook it isnt even funny. I took the first bite and if I was a cartoon character you would have literally seen my mind blow. Why are these pancakes so good?? Why does jalapenos, bacon and syrup go so amazing together?? I have no idea and I enjoyed every bite of those fluffy pancakes. I've never been so confused when eating food before. My mouth was try to figure out what was going on. But I can now say those were the best pancakes that I've had in a while.

If im ever I sac again I'm...

The worst part about this last experience was that they left a rubber band in my food. I mean.......... For the price I don't expect a rubber band in my dish. They also don't have ketchup...? How doesn't a breakfast/lunch joint have ketchup? Lol I guess it's BYOK. Anyways. And I used to love this place a few years ago. They've changed so much from the interior decoration/design to the food. The interior used to have a real personality to it, with all kinds of characteristic details. These little details were part of what I loved about Orphan House. They've replaced a lot of them with the generic, bland, neutral opposites of all of the personality this place had. It feels a lot more like a gentrified version of how I remember my first impression of Orphan House. Anyways. The food used to be 1000% better. The style of potatoes have changed into this wanna-be hash brown style kind of potatoes. The slices of toast are about half the size they used to be consistently served as. Ultimately, not worth the extreme price. Left 2 stars for the coffee and French toast. They're good. My man's said it took forever for food to be brought out to us compared to how it used to be. I think prices may have also increased, but that's not nearly as confusing as the no ketchup part. Had the avocado scramble
