As many people have already mentioned in their reviews as well as many public social media platforms have stated, "Roxie Deli & BBQ" is a Sacramento staple and quite possibly one of the best sandwich spots/delis in the 916. I have ventured at least a couple dozen occasions (ever since they opened around 2005) before picnicking at nearby McKinley Park or venturing out to the American River. And in all those years, this family owned small business thrives on flavor, selection, and unbeatable prices. Best of all, they have very consistent hours being open 7 days a week from 9am-6pm.
To those reading this review that have never been here before, this place is in an affluent area in East Sacramento directly on C St. and 34th St. Parking actually isn't too difficult to find as this is in the heart of a residential area. As far as the inside goes, this tiny market packs a LOT of snacks to choose from; even before you make it to the sandwich menu. Here you will find Moon Pies, Charleston Chews, Laffy Taffy's, popcorn, sunflower seeds, and a HUGE assortment of chips. They also carry a ton of cold beverages including all types of sodas, energy drinks, bottled water, and beer to pair up with that amazing sandwich.
Now onto their sandwiches; if you're a first-timer, I HIGHLY recommend you going with "The Roxie Supreme" on their signature Dutch Crunch bread. Keep in mind that this sandwich is near $20 but it is a foot long and loaded with 6 types of meats that include turkey, roast beef, pastrami, salami, mortadella, and ham. You also get two types of cheese; I usually go with cheddar and provolone. And of course the produce which includes shredded lettuce, tomatoes, red onions, pickles, & jalapeños. And it is completed with a generous amount of mayonnaise, mustard, salt & pepper, and hot sauce. You may also opt for extras (at an additional charge) that includes avocado, bacon, artichoke hearts, & mushrooms.
Aside from their "Roxie Supreme", they also have other Roxie specials including the "House", "Special", "Veggie", "Meatball Mafia", & "Chicken Marinara". Additionally, they serve their breakfast sandwiches all day as well as create-your-own sandwiches. And since "BBQ" is in their business name, they offer delicious slow cooked BBQ food including tri-tip, pulled pork, ribs, & brisket. They even carry a generous amount of sides including potato salad, macaroni salad, pesto pasta salad, crab salad, tuna salad, meatballs, hummus, tamales, deviled eggs, and much more. I would say that Roxie is the most complete hole-in-the-wall no-frills deli in the area as every time I have stepped foot into here, I have gotten positive vibes and smiles from each and every one of the employees that work behind the counter.
As far as my sandwich, the footlong is more than enough food to feed two people. I am not exaggerating, the amount of meat they pack into this is almost too big for anyone to take a bite into it. This place does things right on all levels; service, selection, location, quality, and prices. They don't offer any indoor seating but they do have limited tables directly outdoors. I've almost always taken this to a park on a nice sunny day. With that said and done, "Roxie Deli" gets a unanimous five star review to add to my repertoire of...
Read moreRoxie's is a nice gem in Sacramento that offers consistently good sandwiches. I also appreciate that they offer a variety of chips, drinks, and other sides in their shop. I usually go for the classic turkey with pastrami and they always stack it high. I wish we had more corner delis like this throughout the grid.
However, I knocked off some stars because of their phone/online ordering system. My sandwich has always turned out correct, but it's the customer service part when I go in to grab my food that's a pain. I usually approach and stand next to the register, not impeding their walk-in line, however the workers behind the counter will continuously overlook & ignore me.
Often they appear to get into tunnel vision with their walk-in's, quickly making sandwiches and helping those people, while I awkwardly linger next to the register. I try to respect their hustle during a rush, but this is becoming a consistent thing and it defeats the whole purpose of ordering ahead. Yesterday, I stood next to the walk-in for over 20 minutes waiting to be asked, "How can I help you? Are you here for a pick-up?"
Eventually I had to awkwardly interject another customer's order to get my own, which was sitting ready & paid for behind the counter the whole time. It's not clearly posted whether phone/online orders should come to the register or wait in line, so maybe at first they think I am looking. However after 20 minutes standing in one spot with no other goods in hand, I was surprised they never thought to take a minute and say, "Hey we take orders in line not at the register, unless you called ahead" and ask if I...
Read moreI went to Roxie Deli today. MISTAKE! I have not been there in at least five years because they kept screwing up my sandwich …. order these guys don’t pay attention and they don’t write anything down because they think they have these great memories. The only guy you can trust there is the big dude with the dark beard. He’s really good. He must be some kind of supervisor or manager I figure - maybe the owner. So today I thought I’d give it another try. I ordered three sandwiches. One for me and two for girls I work with. The one wanted a Roxy special sandwich, which comes hot. I stressed to the sandwich maker that I wanted the other two sandwiches cold. He even repeated it back to me. I was going to eat mine there with a fountain Coke, but shocker the Coke was out of order. So I said just make mine to go. my sandwich was done first and it was cold. When the other two came, I felt them. They were both hot. I told the guy and the girl at the cash register. I specifically said I wanted these two sandwich cold because I suspected this might happen. And it happened anyway. I told the sandwich maker and the cashier that this is why I had not been there for so long. And I told him it might be another 5 to 10 years before I come back again. He offered to make another one, but I told him I hate to waste food, so I’ll just take it. I ordered my sandwich on wheat. The guy had told me he needed to get the bread out of the freezer and heat it. Sure enough, I ate my sandwich within an hour and the wheat...
