The park itself looks beautiful and is probably a great place to bring your children earlier during the day, however I would definitely recommend leaving a half hour before sunset to avoid some of the things we experienced. We had left the playground a little before sunset once we say 2 huge rats running around the playground within reach of small children. There were no rat or mouse traps to keep the vermin controlled and according to locals there is a family of 6 large rats living under the steps of the playground.
As we were walking to our car from the park we saw what appeared to be. a homeless man trying to break into our van. We yelled, and ran to our car and bystanders ignored what was happening even though we had 2 small babies with us and continued on as if nothing was happening. We called police and they never came to respond to the incident even though the man was threatening us and prohibiting us from entering our vehicle safely.
I couldn't believe so many people saw what happened and did nothing. The fact that the police wouldn't respond, the community didnt care makes me never want to go back to this park again. If one person had said anything or intervened that would have made a huge difference but they didnt care.
Not a place for out of towners. The area looks upscale and gives you a false sense of security. It is not a safe neighborhood, car hackings, robberies and assaults are common according to locals and law enforcement.
Sad they dont care enough about their community...
Read moreOne of my most favorite parks in town, it has everything you would want - a duck and goose pond, 25-yard pool in the summer, horseshoe pit, jogging path along the perimeter, a pretty rose garden, playground for the young'uns, tennis and basketball courts, a library, bathrooms, tons of large trees and picnic areas There are some busy times, so you may want to come during the off-peak hours. There's a certain amount of ogling by men who apparently have no life, so try not to look too hot. Less busy in the winter and jam-packed in the summer. There are cameras everywhere, so think twice about snatching anything like roses from the garden. This is a well maintained park with community involvement. When someone burned down the playground some years back, the neighborhood pitched in to build an even better one. I think this park is a romantic place as well, probably more so during certain times of the day or year, but that's just me. This park is popular...
Read moreI absolutely love McKinley park! It's a huge park full of different areas for anyone! The park includes a tennis court, covered benches/tables, uncovered benches/tables, lots of grass area, a soccer area (no nets), giant pond home to the ducks and geese, big beautiful trees, a public pool, playground, and the library. The park has a trail around the perimeter for jogging, walking, or running, there's parking all around the park as well.
The park is so beautiful as is and when the rose garden is in bloom it is incredible. The roses are so gorgeous and people always come to take grad photos, prom photos, quinceañera photos etc.. This park is perfect for spending time reading in the shade, gathering with friends, letting your kids run around or whatever! My friends and I love gathering here for picnics and book club and we always are able to find a spot in the grass under the big trees.Definitely check...
