Okay, the place was relatively clean. We chose to dine in but ordered it in to go containers, and I feel that's where things went of the rails. To paraphrase Joe Pesche(they do something horrible to you) in the drive thru. I ordered two chicken pasties with 2 Snapple cold teas (well, she got that part right). Instead, I got two Cornish pasties wich were extremely dry as if it had been sitting in the warmer way to long. I had taken a look around at other people's orders and they were eating their meals happily, their food looking quite edible. Now, normally, I would have created a stink with the staff, but I had just been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at U.C. Davis medical center less than an hour before and was still in shock. I feel like once the staff member heard we wanted "to go" boxes, she couldn't wait to unload some substandard product on us. As I said, I was still in shock from my prior diagnosis. So, my recommendation is to order in, and then ask for to go containers. in my opinion, one star at best, and that's simply because she didn't screw up our...
Read moreFor what this place is, it's perfect. It's not fine dining by any stretch. The inside of the place is small, holding only four small tables. The pasties are amazing! The crust is unbelievably light and flakey. The filling is steamy and flavorful. I had a Bavarian pasty, which has ground beef, cabbage, and bell pepper. My companion had a vegan pasty, all vegetable filling. Whatever spices they use made both taste great. We each got the optional gravy, which is vegan. It's a British brand called Bisto. We also got a side of coleslaw, which was good (Solomon's Deli in Davis has the best coleslaw I've ever had, and this wasn't quite that good), and canned soda, Pellegrino. The service is extremely fast. You can grab a pasty and go for a quick meal. We decided to eat there, and were the only customers from about 12:30 - 1:00 on a Saturday. I sure hope they do more business on weekdays. Go if you can, because it would be a shame if a place this great went out...
Read moreWe've been wanting to try the Pasty Shack for years, and we finally stopped by today. My daughter and I were extremely disappointed in the Cornish pasties we bought. There were plenty of chunks of meat and potatoes, but the meat was dry and chewy, and the potatoes were nice, but everything was overly salted. The only flavors I tasted were LOTS of salt and pepper. The outer part was good, but overall, it was a big disappointment.
A review I just read said to get the gravy, but gravy wasn't offered or mentioned. We took our order to go and sat in our car to eat. It was hot and looked nice, but it wasn't. The gravy would have added moisture, but it also could have added more salt.
I feel like one day I might go back again and try my luck on the Bavarian. The service was great. The young lady that was working was very friendly and polite, so I...
