Pipo has the most satisfying ramen and boat noodles that keep me consistently coming back. I've tried other dishes and all of them are just as good.
Soft Shell Crab Curry Ramen 5/5* I was skeptical at first if this was one of those gimmicky dishes, but it was definitely as delicious as it looks. The flavors remind me of Khao Soi. Pipo's softshell crab was a BIG boy, moist and plump, with a perfectly crisp batter without being oily. The curry was rich and creamy, which went well with the chewy ramen noodles. The egg was runny, and flavor was there. This ended up being my favorite of the meal and was so delicious, I keep coming back for it.
Boat Noodle Soup 4/5* This broth was a nice dark color and so deep with flavors. It was rich, beefy, and a perfect balance of thick yet soupy broth. Spice level 3 was no joke It's slightly more spicy thanyour aVerage 3. I could see the chili oil and chili powder floating at the rim of the bowl. The beef wasn't as tender as I'd like and the noodles got a bit lost in the soup as it absorbed the broth and got too soft, no bouncy stringy-ness
Crispy Chicken Fried Rice 5/5* The chicken is fried to perfection! Light, crispy batter encompassing juicy chicken. Pair with fried rice, it's a perfect combo.
Crispy Pork Belly 3.5/5* Deep fried crispy pork belly, cut into bite sized pieces, drizzled with a sweet, sticky sauce and black sesame seeds. The cut was too small and dried out the pork belly. They were super crispy but I would've preferred a thicker cut for a juicier bite from the pork fat.
Thai Iced Coffee 5/5* Refreshing on a hot day. Wasn't too sweet or too strong.
The ramen is definitely the star here. There's a reason their name has Ramen showcased in it. Their soups have rich and deep flavors, and their spices should have warning labels. Solid place for a good...
Read moreRamen comes to mind when the weather is cool and raining! Ever since I heard Pipo Ramen & Rice is on the Top 100 Places to Eat in Sacramento, I have been wanting to try this place. It's located in South Sacramento, off 65th Street, in this quiet plaza with plenty of parking.
We came here for dinner a little before 6:00 pm on weekdays, and we were the only customers. The place is clean, tidy, and spacious with a high ceiling. We sat down and were given the menu and water right away. At first, I thought this was a Japanese/Ramen restaurant because of the name. After looking at the menu, it turns out it's a Thai restaurant. Either way, I enjoy both Japanese and Thai food.
I love duck, so I immediately knew I wanted the Crispy Duck Fried Rice. I was surprised that the duck breast was served on top of the basil fried rice, instead of diced and cooked together with the fried rice. I really like that because I can see what part of the duck I'm eating. It's also delicious! The duck was crispy and savory. The basil and Thai seasoning add unique flavors to the fried rice. Generous portion. I would definitely get this again. 5/5
We also got the Tonkotsu Ramen. It's your typical ramen with the standard toppings and ramen egg (ajituske tamago). The broth is creamy and not too salty. It really is perfect for the rainy weather. 4/5
The service was great. The server was friendly and checked on us a couple of times. We can't wait to come back and taste...
Read moreIt was great! The ambience was great and the owners were great. They were very forthcoming about what was tasty on the menu. My wife and I tried the Basil Crispy Pork belly with rice, tonkotsu ramen, and the chicken pad thai noodles. Food came out nice and hot. The colors were very vibrant and put together quite nicely.
The loss of a star. Each were delicious but every item was off a taste. The pork bellies were fried too long and were a bit hard to chew. The color was getting close to burnt. There wasnt enough sauce and basil flavor from the dish. The tonkotsu ramen had a really light taste to its pork broth. I prefer a hardy broth versus what they were serving and towards the middle, the broth had a seafood taste. Egg wasnt pickled too long which caused the egg taste saltless. The chicken pad thai had just a bit of flavor after adding the peanuts and bean sprouts. The dish was lacking seasoning. Chicken wasnt salted too much as well.
All in all, I'd come back for the recommended items the owners recommended. Happy...
