Sugar & Slice Bakery on Main — Restaurant in Saint Charles

Terrific little bakery and a nice addition to main Street! I live right down the road so I'm always driving main looking for new places to try... Saw the article about them in the newspaper and decided to stop in. I tried their macarons which btw are giant sized ones, not the bite sized type. Unfortunately I didn't like any of the flavors I tried. The filling was way too sugary and while the texture of the cookie was on point, the flavors just weren't there. The lemon one needed tartness, badly. It had a lemon scent to it but it just tastes like sugar. :( Why not try adding some lemon curd instead of vanilla buttercream for the sandwich filling? Maybe just my taste buds... If you like ultra sugary stuff you will love these. The real star of the show here is their cupcakes. The peanut butter chocolate ones... Omg. My BF and I couldn't stop eating it! So good! Reminds me of the ones my mom likes to make. The maple bacon cupcake was truly delicious also. You can taste that they use real maple syrup, not the fake stuff! I would like to try their other cupcake flavors eventually too. Ohh I did also try their chocolate pie and I honestly didn't like it. The filling didn't really have any chocolate flavor to it in my opinion. The texture was very gelatinous and heavy like they maybe added a little too much corn starch or thickening agent to it. The crust was actually the best part. It tasted homemade. I make this exact type of pie every year for the holidays and I always do a homemade crust so... This tasted similar to that but more so the texture is what tipped me off. Flaky and crumbly and buttery deliciousness! So yeah... Don't be afraid to come to this place but definitely get cupcakes and you won't be disappointed! I hope they see this feedback and maybe consider adding some other stuff to the macarons (tart raspberry jam as a filling would be terrific too!) So I ordered a cake from them for my birthday. I called them to pick the cake up on 26th of July and they told me they didn't have any cake under that name for pick up that day, I guess they looked in there books and someone made a mistake and made our pick up date for August 26th, no biggie. Lucky I called early in the morning and they were still able to make a cake for me, they were supper sorry and I understood because mistakes happen. Later that day I went to go pick up the cake, when I walked in I went to go look at there freezer that they have in the front of the store to see if they had my cake in there and I wanted to also see all the pretty cakes they had. Once I was done looking I told them I was here for pick up and they went to get my cake. They came back with my cake and it was EXACTLY the same as another cake their freezer, the colors on my cake were blue and the other persons was orange. They had the same pattern, butterflies, flowers, placement of flowers, gold everything. It made me kinda sad because I was super excited to order from them because of all the pretty cakes I have seen from there, but to see they made me the exact same cake as someone else kinda upset me. When I ordered from them I gave them complete expressive freedom to do whatever they wanted and I didn't think they were going to give me the exact cake as someone else….I understand they were probably rushed because of the mistake but I feel I was scammed out of getting my own unique cake because of this. Sugar n’ Slice is a Lil’ Slice of Heaven

Despite numerous visits to Sugar n’ Slice, I am still continually impressed by the pastries that I get within each visit. On this latest trip, I dared to try their jalepeno popper scone despite scones usually being my last pick out of normal bakery options. But after I took my first bite into the jalepeno popper scone, my eyes popped out of my head like a Loony Tunes character who just saw the love of their life. This jalepeno popper scone was literally the best scone I’ve ever had, and I’m always a sweets over savory guy which makes this even stranger coming from me.
